Greetings and a belated Happy New Yea
Kindest regards,

Around and about the Centre Place by High Priest Paul Gage, Independence, Missouri

Greetings to the lovely Saints of Australia

I hope your new year is off to a great start and that the good Lord continues to be with and bless

you even in the midst of trials and tribulations. In the Church, Stewardship was always strongly

emphasized during the month of January and of course, many look at February as the “Love Month,
mainly due to Valentine Day. Actually Stewardship and Love go hand in hand just like all of God’s teachings and methods. Many times we think of stewardship only from the money angle, but stewardship is our whole life. All the aspects of stewardship are important or God would not have placed them in His Church. We should always remember that stewardship is not God taking something from us; it is His method of bestowing His richest gifts upon His people.

One of the best definitions of stewardship, I think, is in DC 147:5a “Stewardship is the response of my people to the ministry of my Son, and is required alike of all those who seek to build the

kingdom.” How close does that scripture relate to John 3:16, “For God so loved the world that he gave His Only Begotten Son, that whosoever believeth on him should not perish; but have everlasting life.”

As God gave because He “so loved,” then shouldn’t our response to the ministry of His Son, Jesus Christ, be out of our love for him. Stewardship should always be a joy to God’s people because it is a demonstration of our love and sacrifice as we seek to build the kingdom.

There are four principles of Biblical stewardship and we can include the Book of Mormon and

Doctrine and Covenants as well: 1. Ownership: God owns everything since He created everything. We really do not “own” anything. God even gave us our agency to choose Him as our Father. 2.

Responsibility: God gave man dominion over the earth which means we are responsible, as stewards over God’s creation. 3. Accountability: DC 72:1c states,... for it is required of the Lord, at the hand of every steward to render an account of his stewardship, both in time and eternity.” 4. Rewards for obedience. Read DC 81:3 and everywhere it says, “you” put your name.

There is a book available entitled, “When God Doesn’t Fix It”, by Laura Story. It is the story of the struggle she and her husband go through and how God dispels all their “myths” with His truth. From her experience, she wrote a song called, “Blessings.” One verse says, “We pray for wisdom, your voice to hear, We cry in anger when we cannot feel you near. We doubt your goodness, we doubt your love as if every promise from Your Word is not enough. And all the while, you hear each desperate plea and long that we’d have faith to believe. The chorus goes on, Cause what if your blessings come through rain drops, what if your healing comes through tears. What if a thousand sleepless nights are what it takes to know You’re near. What if trials of this life are your mercies in disguise. She points out all through the book that it is not about us, who we are or what we’ve done for God, but rather it is all about HIM and who He is and what He has done for us.

So far, in the Centre Place, the winter has been mild, but it is not over yet. On January 15th, most, if not all of the churches in the area closed, due to a forecast of an ice storm. It did not happen here, but there are many natural disasters taking place around the country as there are in Australia. We have made it through the election and inauguration of another president. Still, we say with firm belief, “Our only hope is You Jesus, Our only hope is You.”

On Thursday, January 19, and Saturday, January 21, the Central Missouri Restoration Branches (CMRB), Conference of Restoration Elders (CRE), and Pastors of Zion (POZ) came together for a Priesthood and Men’s retreat. The theme was: The first step to wisdom is silence and the second is listening. Some excellent classes were presented by various elders all along the theme and corresponding scriptures. Discussion was about how we come into the presence of the Lord. One interesting scripture is Third Nephi 4 and 5. There was information about the retreat in the last issue of Tidings of Zion listing scriptures, etc.

The Women’s Council of the CRE hosted a January Brunch event for all the women in the area on the 28th. It was held at the Colbern Road RB. There was also a Book of Mormon Intern Retreat in January. Interns go through a training immersed in the Book of Mormon then take a trip to Central America to put their training into action. Many other activities are being planned for the spring and summer.

We are still looking for someone from Australia to come over for the CRE/POZ reunion June 25-30.

All the information was in the last Tidings of Zion. We can help some with finances, if needful. If you are interested, contact me and we can go from there. God bless.

Riches from the Scriptures Volume 03
by Elder Neil Kerswell

Chapter 2 "Seeing the Purpose"
Testimony - Neil Kerswell - Work

Back in May of this year 2016, we were told our workshop was closing down. It wasn't a surprise, winning big projects in the steel industry was becoming virtually impossible, with most work being won by China, Korea and Thailand and being shipped to Australian for about half the price we could build it for here. As the Senior Estimator I had felt the pressure of these changes to our economy and way of life for almost seven years, it took that long for the impact to be fully realized and felt across the nation. Seeing it coming didn't change the fact that I was almost 50 Years of age and had been off the tools as a Boilermaker for 12 ½ years. I knew businesses were failing everywhere in our industry. The area where I worked was once a hive of activity and now is a sea of For Lease signs.

As a family we had something to hold on to, many years earlier God spoke to me one night and

asked my family to do something for him. We were not well off financially and I asked God how

could we do it, we could barely afford to provide for our family. God spoke to me and said if we

would do this thing we would never want. From that day forward miracles happened (my manager once heard a voice when he woke up telling him to promote me to a higher position as if a man was standing in his bedroom) raising our circumstances every year from that day forward.

I will be honest even though I have known such things my confidence was shattered after such a long hard battle. I never doubted God but did doubt his blessing because I had hoped and prayed for so long for the industry to heal somehow and it hadn't. Getting work in the same field of estimating was also a difficult experience, I have secured two jobs only to find they wanted a slave and not a team member wanting a minimum of 11 hour days plus weekends and half the money. Both companies had been through a string of Estimators before me and needless to say final negotiations broke down.

With my Redundancy payout eroding away each week, I was forced to consider going back to the tools in my trade. My concerns were could I still do it physically I had put on a lot of weight over the years being in an office environment. Boilermaking is very demanding and very hot in Australian summers, did I still have the skills it had been so long, and would anyone give me a go at my age?

I contacted my Brother in Christ Gary Melling as I knew he was in charge of a welding department and asked could I practice after his work sometime on his works equipment to try and get my hand in with welding at least. He was wonderful and gave me the opportunity and had a temporary position for 4 weeks paid time which had just presented itself. This time was the greatest blessing to me. Every day I was remembering tricks of the trade which increased my speed and quality of workmanship, I had long since forgotten them. By the end of the four weeks I still wasn't anywhere near as good as I was in my prime but was able to be a profitable servant for the company. Every day was an answer to prayer, I thank God for his goodness and for Gary.

Next twelve weeks opened up at a business that build the formwork and then erects concrete high story buildings. I had never built formwork and thought it would be rough enough is good enough. I was very wrong. Even the laser etching of part numbers on the steel comes out in the set concrete therefore all workmanship had to be to a polished finish and everything had to be accurate to the within 1 mm. They preferred perfection though. Thanks be to God I was partnered with a young Samoan 3rd year apprentice and we were able to achieve perfection and made our employers very happy. This was also an opportunity to share the Gospel, in particular the Book of Mormon. Shem the Samoan was once a Mormon and had lost faith and was attending a Philippino church as he felt he was being fed there. Our family had just finished reading the whole Book of Mormon together and the testimony of Christ was strong in my heart in my understanding of God's dealing with them and the Islands of the sea. Most days we would talk about Christ most of the day as we worked, and I would speak as to the divinity of the Book of Mormon which he had once believed in. Most people would have no idea how great it is to have your work place an environment to serve your employer with vigour and worship at the same time. The manager heard us one day and he added how he had run away from Sunday school as a boy and his father was so proud of him, much to his mother's sadness. I know this isn't a positive testimony from him but he knew we were talking about God as we worked and he was fine with that. He told us later they had been through seven boilermakers trying to find good ones like Shem and I.

I still keep regular contact with Shem (named after Noah's son), he reads his Book of Mormon and tells me his problems to pray about. He told me he believed God sent me there to help him because he was in a bad place with his faith at that time. Some of you might say but he isn't coming to church yet.

I always remember a testimony Norman Melling shared once with me and other priesthood many years ago. He was once trying to help his girlfriend at the time who became his wife Cathy to know of the Restored Gospel (she like my wife originally was Catholic). During the process he believed God spoke to him and said (don't destroy what she has, build upon it) I don't remember exact wording but that is what has stuck with me. We of the Restoration so often need to learn that lesson. With God's help I worked on getting him to respect his parents again and to share with them, even worship with them, thus building again the family bond which had been lost to him when he had got into bad company in his youth.

People say to me now they have never seen me look so happy, and do you want to know something, I don't even really look for work in estimating anymore. Today as I woke up what has not made sense to me recently suddenly did. The need for extra finances to do what God asked of Joanne and I many years ago has passed in recent times, it is not fulfilled but many of the financial requirements have.

There was no need for me to be in a high paid, high stress level job anymore. Instead of making

decisions worth up to $50 million I now work with steel worth only hundreds of thousands at times and piece by piece at a time to make a whole. I can see something physical at the end of the day/weeks for my works efforts which has been very satisfying. I have lost much weight, I am physically much healthier, I don't stop breathing throughout the night like I once did with snoring. I come home and forget about the day's work. I am not saying I don't long for the thrill and negotiation with customers that I once knew occasionally. I enjoyed being a part of the senior management teams, knowing exactly what was going on at the highest levels when sharing at that level.

But I can now see God's hand again and I see purpose in recent events. I don't know what the future holds and working on a casual basis goes against my grain as I have always seeked stability for my wife and family. But I know God has helped and is still helping every day, every step of the way. Even allowing worship at work sometimes. As I said earlier how many people have experienced that? I am currently back with Gary at Fleetwood they needed someone for two weeks and it looks like it will be four again. I enjoy seeing him each day and talking briefly from time to time about family and God. I thank God for my family and loved ones and for the people God brings into our lives to share with.

May all who read this be blessed is my Prayer in Jesus name Amen.
