Obituary and Service - Iola Irene Williamson

Iola Irene Williamson, 84, Independence, Missouri, passed away February 2, 2017 at Rosewood Health and Rehab. Independence, MO. Iola was born at Ridgeway, Missouri December 30, 1932 to George and Arthena Prather.

Iola was the oldest of six children. Due to her mother’s ill health she was often responsible in helping to raise her brothers and sisters whom she loved very much. She was able to spend summers with her grandmother Mary Harrold whom she dearly loved. Iola described her as an “exceptional woman.” Iola also grew up in Gallatin and Bethany, MO.

November 15, 1948 Iola was united in marriage to Carroll Dean Schell. They adopted two children Cindy Lynn and Michael Eugene. They moved to Creston, Iowa where Iola was a homemaker and Carroll was a master electrician. She joined the Reorganized Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints and had many wonderful experiences while attending church there. They moved from Creston to Independence, MO in 1964. After 35 years of marriage Carroll passed away August 19, 1983 at the age of 58.

Iola was a very talented lady and was an excellent seamstress and cake Baker Extraordinaire. She discovered that making and decorating cakes was a special gift from God to her. She baked cakes for weddings, anniversaries, birthdays, graduations, retirement parties or any occasion you could think of. Her cakes were so delicious that the wedding photographers were always excited to be at her weddings to be able to have a piece of her cake.

Iola was a member of the Farview Restoration Branch in Independence, MO. She served as Vacation Church School Director and women’s leader. Iola was very active in her church and had many friends.

Iola married Charles Williamson January 14, 1984. They both attended the same church and married after the death of both of their spouses. They celebrated 33 years of marriage. Iola has always felt that the Lord has blessed her throughout her life and she was a good and faithful servant to the very end.

Iola is survived by her husband Charles Williamson, Independence, her daughter and son-in-law Cindy and Larry Hodges of Independence, three step sons Chuck, Gary and Mike Williamson , two granddaughters Melanie Daniels and Amber Segalo, seven step grand children, four great grandchildren and one step great granddaughter. Tammy Ostrander Brown and David Ostrander who considered her as a “Grandmother” Her brothers, Ronald Prather, Braddyville, Iowa, and Elbert Prather Waynesville, Mo. Two sisters, Sue Abrams, Skidmore, MO. and Gretchen Kirchner, Braddyville, Iowa . And many other nephews, nieces, relatives and friends that will miss her very much.

Iola was preceded in death by her mother Arthena Prather, her father George Prather, her brothers Wilbur Prather and Larnie Prather, her husband Carroll D. Schell and her son Michael Eugene Schell. Her step daughter Linda Kelly and her step grandson Jeremy Williamson. Another couple that were very special and like parents to her were Paul and Alice Winans.

Funeral services will be held at The Groves Chapel, 1515 West White Oak, Independence, MO 64050 Tuesday February 7, 2017. Visitation 10:00 - 11:00 A.M. Memorial Service 11:00 A.M. Burial immediately after at Mound Grove Cemetery 1818 N. River Blvd. Independence, MO 64050.
