Paul Rodney Smart Obituary
November 12, 1924 – April 6, 2017
Paul Rodney Smart, age 92, of Kearney, Missouri passed away on Thursday, April 6, 2017. He was born on November 12, 1924, in Eastern Colorado near Eads, Colorado to parents Arthur Gilbert (Bert) and Lenna Cook Smart. The family moved to Kincaid, Kansas in March, 1934 where Paul graduated from Kincaid High School in 1942. After moving to Denver and Kansas City for various jobs, Paul was drafted into the Army in World War II on April 14, 1943 and returned from his European service in January, 1946. Paul then attended Graceland College (Lamoni, Iowa) and Balboa University (San Diego, California) receiving a BA in Accounting in September, 1949.
After graduating from Graceland and before moving to San Diego, Paul married Beatrice (Peggy) Gard on June 6, 1948. Paul began work as an accountant at Consumers Cooperative Association (later known as Farmland Industries) in 1949 and retired as Director of Excise Tax in 1983. In 1954, Paul and Peggy purchased a 100 acre farm in Kearney, Missouri that was home until each of their deaths.
Paul was baptized into the Reorganized Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints as a 13-year old child, but due to distance, the family was unable to attend. After his time at Graceland College and with the influence of his dear wife, Paul’s most important activities in his life became serving God. Paul was ordained to the office of Priest (1951), Elder (1960), and High Priest (1966). He served as Pastor of various congregations: Liberty (RLDS), Excelsior Springs (RLDS), Washington Restoration Branch (Excelsior Springs, Missouri), and Maysville Restoration Branch (Maysville, Missouri). Beginning in 1975, Paul and Peggy began teaching classes at churches first in the Kansas City area and then, after retirement, branching out to churches across the country.
Paul is survived by his daughter and her husband, Sue and Archie Gatrost, Independence, MO; his son and his wife, Pete and Dana Smart, Kearney, MO; grandchildren, Andrew and Katlynn Gatrost, Ben and Laura Gatrost, Emilie and Garrett White, Hannah and Ben Anderson, Ramona and Nick McLaughlin; and 7 great-grandchildren. He is also survived by sisters, Bonnie Thomas and Betty (Kenneth) Stobaugh; Sisters-in-Law, Rosebud Gard, Marilyn (Fred) Bozarth); and Brother-in-Law, Reg (Jan) Gard. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife Peggy; son, Rodney; sisters, Wilma (Sis) Dunlap and Anna Mae Gard; and brothers, Clyde Smart and Don Smart.
After Peggy’s death, Paul received much comfort and companionship from his dog, Abby, and also from his friends at the lunches offered by the Kearney Senior Center. We would like to thank all of the staff at Oak Pointe of Kearney for their help, support, and loving care; and Crossroads Hospice staff who provided care in those final weeks.
Visitation will be held 9-10 AM, Saturday, April 29, 2017, at the South Crysler Restoration Branch, 16101 E Salisbury Rd; Independence, Missouri 64050. The memorial service will follow at 10 AM at the church. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to your favorite charity.
