Francis Harper Message for 6/29/2018
Dear Ones,
The body of Christ [the church] is sadly lacking in spiritual power today. One reason for this spiritual weakness is that only a few are fasting. We focus on the flesh first and ask: “What’s for dinner?” while our spiritual needs are simmering on the back burner! Remember the old-saying about “putting first things first?” We need to change our ways. Our prayers are not availing as much as they will if we add fasting to our prayers. The formula is F+P=MSP (more spiritual power and blessings).
The sons of Mosiah “had given themselves to much prayer and fasting, therefore they had the spirit of prophecy, and the spirit of revelation, and when they taught, they taught with power and authority, even as with the power and authority of God . . . They did suffer much, both in body and in mind; such as hunger, thirst and fatigue, and also much labor in the spirit” (Alma 12:5,9). “In spite of their sufferings in the body they rejoiced exceedingly” (Alma 12:2).
Fasting proves that our prayers are sincere. Fasting proves that “we mean business.” Fasting gets the Lord’s attention. Our fleshly appetites need to be curbed. Paul lamented: “O wretched man that I am! Who shall deliver from the body of this death? I thank God through Jesus Christ our Lord. So with the mind I myself serve the law of God; but with the flesh the law of sin” (Romans 7:24-26). By fasting we are strengthening our faith muscles; achieving dominion over our flesh.
I recall Ray Whiting preaching about the battle between the flesh and spirit. He suggested that we take a cold water shower saying, “Body get in there!” He would demonstrate the mind or spirit gaining dominion over the flesh, by acting out the struggle of “mind over matter.” I believe you can visualize his antics; jumping in and out of the cold water. Yielding to fleshy appetites ruins many lives.
One of my grandchildren is concerned about choices of career and a marital companion. God is willing to assist us with these decisions of great importance. He responds to prayers of faith with fasting and waiting. Fasting will assist in bringing us into alignment with his perfect will and the destiny he has planned for us.
Ezra was the spiritual leader of the Jews who returned to Jerusalem from their captivity in Babylon. This man of God proclaimed a fast at the river Ahava. “. . . that we might afflict ourselves before our God, to seek of him a right way for us, and for our little ones . . . The hand of our God is upon all them for good that seek him . . . So we fasted and besought our God for this; and he was entreated of us” (Ezra 8:21-23). Ezra was especially concerned for the “little ones;” the younger generation, as we should also be.
My Aunt Inez had three sons for which she fasted and prayed for many days. Eventually all three were ordained as elders and served the Lord faithfully to the end of their lives.
Prayers become extra-ordinary when they are reinforced by fasting. And extra-ordinary prayers bring extra-ordinary results. The Weldon family was an example of this. They lived in California at the time their father became very sick. He had received the anointing with oil and the ordinance of the laying on of hands but his condition did not improve. Two of his sons took the initiative to notify other members of the family and asked for 3 days of fasting and prayer. After another administration, their father began breathing normally and recovered.
My Love to All,
Francis Harper

Fasting and Prayer
In his sermon on the mount, Jesus gave his disciples some instruction on how to give, pray, and
fast; the three primary duties of Christians. He said, “But when thou doest alms, let . . . thine alms be in
secret; and thy Father who seeth in secret, . . . shall reward thee openly” (Matthew 6:3-4).
“And when thou prayest, thou shalt not be as the hypocrites; for they love to pray standing in the
synagogues . . . that they may be seen of men. . . But thou, when thou prayest, enter into thy closet, and
when thou hast shut the door, pray to thy Father who is in secret; and thy Father who seeth in secret shall
reward thee openly” (Matthew 6:5-6).
“. . . when ye fast, be not as the hypocrites, of a sad countenance; for they disfigure their faces,
that they may appear unto men to fast. Verily, I say unto you, they have their reward. But thou, when
thou fastest, anoint thy head and wash thy face, that thou appear not unto man to fast, but unto thy
Father who seeth in secret, shall reward thee openly” (Matthew 6:17-18).
Whenever we give, pray or fast in secret, the Lord will reward us
openly. The Lord is pleased when we give, fast and pray without drawing
attention to ourselves. Jesus “. . . spake this parable unto certain men, who
trusted in themselves that they were righteous . . . Two men went up into the
temple to pray; the one a Pharisee, and the other a publican. The Pharisee
stood and prayed thus with himself; God, I thank thee that I am not as other
men, extortioners, unjust, adulterers; or even as this publican. I fast twice in
the week; I give tithes of all that I possess. But the publican, standing afar
off, would not lift up so much as his eyes unto heaven, but smote upon his
breast, saying, God, be merciful to me a sinner. I tell you, this man went
down to his house justified, rather than the other; for every one who exalteth
himself, shall be abased; and he who humbleth himself, shall be exalted”
(Luke 18:9-14).
It was not the intention of the Lord to minimize the importance of fasting, tithe-paying and
prayer when he shared this parable. He spent forty days in the wilderness, fasting and praying, preparing
for his earthly ministry. He encouraged a rich young man to sell all he had and give to the poor. He was
simply teaching his disciples to guard against doing these things to draw attention to themselves and
their piety.
Fasting and prayer were of utmost importance in the life of our Lord and it should be the same
for us. Some might consider including prayer and fasting in their daily routine a duty, but in the eyes of
Jesus, time spent with the Father in prayer coupled with fasting must have been seen as a great privilege.
When we look forward to communion with God more than we look forward to our favorite food,
we are becoming more like Jesus who said: “I have meat to eat that ye know not of” (John 4:34). Job
desired to be in the presence of God. “Oh that I knew where I might find him! that I might come even to
his seat! . . . I have esteemed the words of his mouth more than my necessary food” (Job 23: 3, 12).
What is fasting? Perhaps it could be said it is giving up the pleasure of feeding the body in lieu of
the joy of feasting at the Lord’s table which nourishes and satisfies the soul. It is written: “Verily this is
fasting and prayer; or, in other words, rejoicing and prayer (Doctrine and Covenants 59:3-b). Fasting
from food brings us closer to the Lord, and in his “presence is fullness of joy . . .” (Psalm 16:11).
Our prayers become mighty prayers when they are supported by fasting. When the disciples
could not cure a demon-possessed child the Lord chastened them, saying “. . .This goeth not out but by
prayer and fasting” (Matthew 17:21)

CPRS Firerworks Tent Needs Help!
WE ARE IN GREAT NEED OF YOUR HELP! The time to work the tent is now here and we still need many volunteers to sign up to help out with the CPRS Fireworks tent! This is a very big fundraiser for CPRS, and worth the time invested. Please don't assume others will step up. Answer the call yourself!
If you are new to the school or haven't volunteered to help out with the fireworks tent before, it's easy to sign up and help out! Our experienced volunteers are eager to train some new helpers.
Go to https://www.signupgenius.com/go/30e094da9a622aaf85-cprs
The fireworks tent was set up last Wednesday, June 20. There will also be a need for volunteers to help with taking it down on Thursday, July 5.
This is a huge endeavor and is completely dependent on volunteers. Like the saying goes, many hands make light work! The more volunteers we have, the more we can spread the load so it's not so burdensome on just a few.
Please sign up for at least one shift, more than one is much appreciated! There are many ways to volunteer, contact Anthony Rush for details. Any and all help is needed, welcomed, and appreciated.
If you have any questions, please call Anthony Rush at 816-304-5833.

Tidings of Zion #124
Greetings Dear Saints,
As you know we are always looking for testimonies, experiences, vacation church school, reunion, camp, retreat, branch and family contributions for Tidings of Zion.
It is time again to start working on the next issue which will be # 124 and due out in late July or early August.
Everyone can help. If you hear a good sermon, class, testimony, etc. ask the person to send it in for consideration in Tidings of Zion and follow up on it. Don't just tell the Publication Council about it, although that is helpful.
Since several camps. reunions and retreats have already concluded, it would be helpful to get those contributions sent in now. For those events yet to come, send in your contributions as soon as possible following the events. Send photos as well, but make sure they are good, clear, close up shots, from the front. It helps to send the photos separately.
Articles are also welcome regarding the principles and teachings of the Church. You do not have to be priesthood to submit an article.
The members of the Publication Council and its officers will be publicized after the CRE gathering this next week.
Currently I am still Chair and any items can be sent to me at
pauljg_64055@yahoo.com
Thanks
God bless

Francis Harper Message for 6/22/2018

Francis Harper Message for 6/22/2018
We are quite likely among “those upon whom the end of the world shall come” (1 Corinthians 10:11). This is written: “Now all these things [types and shadows] happened unto them for ensamples; and they are written for our admonition also, and for an admonition for those upon whom the end of the world shall come.”
Enoch, “the seventh from Adam” (Jude 1:14) “continued his preaching unto the people of God. And it came to pass in his days, that he built a city that was called the city of Holiness, even Zion . . .and lo! Zion in process of time was taken up into heaven. And the Lord called his people, Zion, because they were of one heart and of one mind, and dwelt in righteousness; and there were no poor among them” (Genesis 7:23-27 IV).
Enoch and his city are a beautiful type and shadow of the imminent coming of the Lord which is prophesied in many passages of the Scriptures. Paul in his first letter to the Thessalonians wrote: “For the Lord himself shall descend from heaven with a shout, with the voice of the archangel, and with the trump of God; and the dead in Christ shall rise first; Then they who are alive, shall be caught up together into the clouds . . . to meet the Lord in the air . . .” (1 Thessalonians 4:16-17).
The Lord will be accompanied by ten thousands of his saints which will include the city of Enoch (Jude 1:14, Revelation 1:7). This will be a reunion none of the Lord’s people will want to miss! This meeting is described: “And the Lord said unto Enoch, Then shalt thou and all thy city meet them there; and we will receive them into our bosom; and they shall see us, and we will fall upon their necks, and they shall fall upon our necks, and we will kiss each other; and there shall be mine abode, and it shall be Zion, which shall come out of all the creations I have made; and for a thousand years shall the earth rest” (Genesis 7:71-72 IV).
If we desire to be a participant in this glorious event we must be like the citizens of Enoch’s city. This city was a demonstration of the righteousness we must attain to be worthy to dwell with the Lord in Zion. John wrote: “ . . . we know that, when he shall appear, we shall be like him . . . And every man that has this hope in him purifieth himself, even as he is pure” (1 John 3:2-3).
“In this world, we have no continuing city.” In the early morning hours of December 6, 2001, the still, small voice spoke these words to me again and again. I knew these words were being brought to my attention by the power of the Holy Spirit. The words were not familiar to me. I could not recall reading or hearing them before.
Using continuing as the key word, I discovered in Strong’s Concordance that the word continuing is found only four times in the Bible. In the final listing I read, “For here have we no continuing city, but we . . .” I wondered about the missing words, so I quickly turned to the Bible to get “the rest of the story.” The complete text reads: “For here [in this world] have we no continuing city, but we seek one to come” (Hebrews 13:14).
These are the assuring words we need to hear today. I thanked our awesome God for these words of warning and encouragement. We must never forget that all things in this world are temporary. We need to focus on things eternal. The words of this text are encouraging because they renew our hope in the everlasting kingdom of God. “. . . We seek one [a continuing city] to come!”
The coming of “the general assembly of the church of the firstborn” to the earth is the only continuing city there will ever be. All else will crumble and fall. Our anticipation of the coming of the Lord, with Zion, is based upon the never-failing word of God. (See Genesis 9:22-23 IV; Jude 1:14; Revelation 1:7).
We often sing: “We know He is coming to gather His sheep and plant them in Zion in love . . .” Redeemer of Israel, Hymns of the Restoration, #153.
My Love to All,
Francis Harper

Types and Shadows
Although the phrase “type and shadow” is not utilized in the Bible, it is utilized quite a number of times in The Book of Mormon: Mosiah 1:111, 7:110, 8:8; Alma 10:9, 14:69, 14:75, 16:191, 17:80; Ether 6:6. A type and shadow can be defined as a person, object or event representing or exemplifying someone or something that really exists or will exist. Most of us can remember stepping on the shadow of some person or object that represented a real person or thing.
Paul referred to the feasts of Israel as “a shadow of things to come,” which they are. See Colossians 2:17. King Benjamin in speaking to his people spoke of the “many signs, and wonders, and types and shadows . . . concerning the coming of Jesus” (Mosiah 1:111).
The children of Israel witnessed many types and shadows of Jesus during their journey from Egypt to their promised land. “And they journeyed from mount Hor by the way of the Red sea, to compass the land of Edom; and the soul of the people was much discouraged because of the way. And the people spake against God, and against Moses, Wherefore have ye brought us up out of Egypt to die in the wilderness? for there is no bread, neither is there any water; and our soul loatheth this light bread. And the Lord sent fiery serpents among the people . . . and much people of Israel died” (Numbers 21:4-6).
Therefore the people came to Moses, and said, ‘We have sinned, for we have spoken against the Lord, and against thee; pray unto the Lord, that he take away the serpents from us.’ And Moses prayed for the people. And the Lord said unto Moses, Make thee a fiery serpent and set it upon a pole; and it shall come to pass, that everyone that is bitten when he looketh upon it, shall live. And Moses made a serpent of brass, and put it upon a pole; and it came to pass, that if a serpent had bitten any man, when he beheld the serpent of brass, he lived” (Numbers 21:7-9).
Paul saw the many signs and wonders that happened to the Israelites in the wilderness as types and shadows of the coming of Jesus and his ministry. Paul wrote: “Moreover, brethren, I would not that ye should be ignorant, how that all our fathers were under the cloud, and all passed through the sea; and were all baptized unto Moses in the cloud and in the sea; And all did eat the same spiritual meat [manna representing the living bread from heaven]; And did all drink the same spiritual drink; for they drank of that spiritual rock . . . and the rock was Christ [the source of living water]. But with many of them God was not well pleased . . .” (1 Corinthians 10:1-5).
John recognized the brazen serpent mounted on a pole by Moses as a type and shadow of Jesus raised upon the cross. He wrote: “And as Moses lifted up the serpent in the wilderness, even so must the Son of Man be lifted up: That whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have eternal life” (John 3:14-15).
Paul concluded with these words: “Now all these things [types and shadows] happened unto them for ensamples; and they are written for our admonition also, and for an admonition for those upon whom the end of the world shall come” (1 Corinthians 10:11). These “ensamples,” types and shadows, were given for every generation; even ours. They all point to Jesus; the source of our strength and salvation.
It is written that the brazen serpent was preserved till the time of King Hezekiah, when it was destroyed because it had become an object of worship.

Evening Prayer
Someone has said that if Christians really understood the full extent of the power we have available through prayer, we might be speechless.
Did you know that during WWII there was an adviser to Churchill who organized a group of people who dropped what they were doing every day at a prescribed hour for one minute to collectively pray for the safety of England, its people and peace?
There is now a group of people organizing the same thing here in America.
If you would like to participate:
Every evening at 9:00 PM Eastern Time
(8:00 PM Central) (7:00 PM Mountain) (6:00 PM Pacific), stop whatever you are doing and spend one minute praying for the safety of the United States, our troops, our citizens, and for a return to a Godly nation. If you know anyone else who would like to participate, please pass this along. Our prayers are the most powerful asset we have.
Please forward this to your praying friends.

Plea for a Unified Centerplace

Plea for a Unified Centerplace
One week from today many people will be arriving in independence from outlying areas for the elders conference/reunion held at Waldo Avenue Restoration Branch (CPRS).
Over the last several months I have traveled to many areas visiting Saints and branches. The one thing I hear over and over that they would like to see is a unified centerplace.
I can bare testimony to you that the Lord has directed our themes for this reunion. Many people are coming from multiple states as well as Kenya and Mexico. Many for the very first time. My greatest fear is all these people show up from other states and few people show up from the centerplace.
I know we have our problems and differences but brothers and sisters with everything within me and by the gift and power of the Holy Ghost I plead and even beg of you to come. Come and see. Come and share. Come and fellowship. We will have amazing spirit led classes and worship throughout the day and preaching each evening. Sunday night will be kicked off by elder Eric Odida from Kenya.

Francis Harper Message for 6/15/2018
Dear Ones,
Only a few have walked with God in intimate association. Enoch was among them. This man of great spiritual stature is barely mentioned in the King James Bible. He is briefly mentioned in Genesis 5:24: “And Enoch walked with God: and he was not; for God took him.” He and his people were translated or raptured to live in the presence of God. Those who accept the Inspired Version are blessed with more information on the life and ministry of this great man of God.
According to the Inspired Version, “The Lord said unto Enoch, Go forth, and do as I have commanded thee, and no man shall pierce thee. Open thy mouth, and it shall be filled, and I will give thee utterance . . . say unto this people, choose ye this day to serve the Lord God who made you. Behold, my Spirit is upon you; wherefore all thy words will I justify, and the mountains will flee before you, and the rivers will change from their course; and thou shalt abide in me, and I in you; therefore walk with me” (Genesis 6:33-36 IV).
“And the Lord showed Enoch all things, even unto the end of the world. And he saw the day of the righteous, the hour of their redemption, and received a fullness of joy . . . And Enoch and all his people walked with God, and he dwelt in the midst of Zion. And it came to pass, that Zion was not, for God received it up into his own bosom; and from thence went forth the saying, Zion is fled” (Genesis 7:77-78).
God made an everlasting covenant with Enoch; “And the bow [rainbow] shall be in the cloud; and I will look upon it, that I may remember the everlasting covenant, which I made unto thy father Enoch; that, when men should keep all my commandments, Zion should again come on the earth, the city of Enoch which I have caught up unto myself. And this is mine everlasting covenant, that when thy posterity shall embrace the truth, and look upward, then shall Zion look downward, and all the heavens shall shake with gladness, and the earth shall tremble with joy. And the general assembly of the church of the first-born shall come down out of heaven, and possess the earth, and shall have place until the end come. And this is mine everlasting covenant, which I made with thy father Enoch” (Genesis 9:21-23).
Jude must have had knowledge of Enoch and his city when he wrote: “And Enoch also the seventh from Adam, prophesied of these, saying, Behold, the Lord cometh with ten thousands of his saints” (Jude 1:14). John wrote: “For behold he cometh with ten thousands of his saints” (Revelation 1:7). Paul also wrote of Enoch: “By faith Enoch was translated that he should not see death . . . before his translation he had this testimony, that he pleased God” (Hebrews 11:5).
We need to pray for an eternal perspective. Our focus tends to be limited to the cares and concerns of this temporal world. Too often, we lose sight of the bigger picture. Enoch and his city called Zion, the seventh generation from Adam, are a type and shadow of the greater gathering and catching up of the saints for which we should be preparing in this seventh millennium from Adam.
“For the Lord himself shall descend from heaven . . . and the dead in Christ shall rise first; Then they who are alive, shall be caught up together . . . to meet the Lord in the air . . .” (1 Thessalonians 4:16-17).
Let us pray for one another, that we “might walk worthy of the Lord unto all pleasing (as Enoch and the people called Zion), being fruitful in every good work, and increasing in the knowledge of God . . .” (Colossians 1:10-12).
My love to All,
Francis Harper

Come Walk With Me
Come walk with me, is the most precious of all invitations. It is the call of God to every person on earth. “Then Jesus spake again unto them, saying, I am the light of the world; he that followeth me shall not walk in darkness, but shall have the light of life” (John 8:12).
The problem is, “And this is the condemnation, that light is come into the world, and men love darkness rather than light, because their deeds are evil. For every one who doeth evil hateth the light, neither cometh to the light, lest his deeds should be reproved” (John 3:19-20).
The most intelligent and wisest decision any person can make is to choose to walk with the Lord. It is written: “If ye walk in my statutes, and keep my commandments, and do them; then I will give you rain in due season, and the land shall yield her increase . . . And I will walk among you, and will be your God, and ye shall be my people” (Leviticus 26:3-4, 12). In other words, those who walk with the Lord will be blessed in this world and in the world to come. For “eye hath not see, nor ear heard, neither have entered into the heart of man, the things which God hath prepared for them that love him” (1 Corinthians 2:9).
Those who choose to “walk contrary” to God will be punished (Leviticus 26: 23-24). Those who follow men who walk in darkness, or who walk in the light of their own fire and in the sparks they have kindled . . . “shall lie down in sorrow” (Isaiah 50:7-8). “. . . the way of man is not in himself; it is not in man that walketh to direct his steps” (Jeremiah 10:23).
The steps of a good man are ordered by the Lord; and he delighteth in his way. Though he fall, he shall not be utterly cast down; for the Lord upholdeth him with his hand. I have been young, and now I am old; yet have I not seen the righteous forsaken” (Psalm 37:23-24). As Jesus said; “I am the way, the truth, and the life; no man cometh unto the Father but by me” (John 14:6).
Jesus warned one who pledged: “Master, I will follow thee whithersoever thou goest.” And Jesus said unto him, “The foxes have holes, and the birds of the air have nests; but the Son of Man hath not where to lay his head” (Matthew 8:19-20). Following Jesus has never been easy, nor will it ever be. Before choosing to walk with the Lord we need to count the cost. See Luke 14:28-33.
In the summer of 1991 the Lord called me to come walk with him by awakening me at precisely 3:33 A.M. several times. Finally, I said to him, Lord, I think I know the meaning of the number 666 but what is the meaning of 333? He immediately answered: “That is the way of the cross; I spent three hours on the cross, three days in the tomb and on the third day I arose again. He that would come after me must deny himself and take up his cross and follow me” (Matthew 16: 25 IV; 16:24 KJV). “And whosoever doth not bear his cross, and come after me, cannot be my disciple” (Luke 14:27).
“And now for a man to take up his cross, is to deny himself [of] all ungodliness, and every worldly lust, and keep my commandments” (Matthew 16:26 IV). “For what is a man profited, if he shall gain the whole world, and lose his own soul? Or what shall a man give in exchange for his soul? For the Son of Man shall come in the glory of his Father, with his angels; and then he shall reward every man according to his works” (Matthew 16:29-30 IV; 16:26-27 KJV).
The decision to accept or reject his invitation to deny ourselves and take up our cross and follow him will determine our eternal destiny! Always remember, true discipleship is costly.

Francis Harper Message for 6/8/2018
Dear Ones,
Before we leave the subject of fear, all who believe and who know the Lord, need to be reminded of our obligation to warn the unbelievers, and those who have fallen away, of the impending judgments of God. “For if we sin willfully after that we have received the knowledge of the truth, there remaineth no more sacrifice for sins. But a certain fearful looking for of judgment and fiery indignation, which shall devour the adversaries” (Hebrews 10:26-27).
“For we know him that hath said, Vengeance belongeth unto me, I will recompense saith the Lord. And again, the Lord shall judge his people. It is a fearful thing to fall into the hands of the living God” (Hebrews 10:30-31).
The liberal theologians of today tend to soft pedal the judgments of God. They may even say: “Eat, drink, and be merry; nevertheless, fear God, he will justify in committing a little sin,: yea, lie a little, . . . and if it so be that we are guilty, God will beat us with a few stripes, and at last we shall be saved in the kingdom of God” (2 Nephi 12:10-11). This is not facing the reality of God’s judgment.
John Nesbit, a Scottish Covenanter, wrote, We need not be afraid. I am more afraid to lie than to die. The Scottish Covenanters were severely persecuted in 1685. “The Scottish persecution [by the church] was worse than that of the Roman emperors and popish inquisitors” (Robinson Crusoe, Daniel DeFoe).
Sometimes we misinterpret the words, “God fearing.” We should fear that we might offend God or violate his commandments. We should fear everything that might grieve the Spirit of God.
James Renwick, a Scottish Covenanter, condemned to die in three days, told a friend who kindly asked how he was, said he was doing very well, but he would be doing better in a few days when he would be beyond the reach of temptations. Fearing no evil, within two hours of his death and eternity, he said death is no terror to me . . . rejoice with me, I am going to my Father to experience the joy of what “eye hath not seen, nor ear heard, neither have entered the heart of man, the things which God hath prepared for those who love him (1 Corinthians 2:9; Isaiah 64:4-5).
Jesus instructed the twelve; “ . . . fear not them who are able to kill the body, but are not able to kill the soul; but rather fear him who is able to destroy both soul and body in hell” (Matthew 10:25 IV; 10:28 KJV).
Seventy Richard Neill was doing some missionary work in an area of the Philippines which had recently experienced some terrorist activities by ISIS. Richard was not intimidated. He made this statement: “I will not live in fear.” David was not afraid of Goliath, the giant of the Philistines (1 Samuel 17). Nor was Abinadi frightened by the wicked king Noah (Nosiah 7:109).
“ . . . the time soon cometh, that the fullness of the wrath of God shall be poured out upon all the children of men . . . he will preserve the righteous by his power . . . the righteous need not fear . . . they shall be saved” (1 Nephi 7:34-38).

“The Righteous Need Not Fear”
There are two kinds of fear: Godly fear and fear of persons, places, or things. Godly fear is described in Hebrews 12:28; “. . . serve God acceptably with reverence and godly fear.” I believe reverence is the key word.
The definition of godly fear is clarified by reading 1 Kings 3:28. “And all Israel heard of the judgment which the king [Solomon] had judged; and they feared the king; for they saw that the wisdom of God was in him to do judgment.”
The judgment of Solomon, which brought him so much fame and respect, is written in 1 Kings 3:16-28. Two women, living in the same house, were claiming the same baby. Both were mothers of infant sons. While they slept one mother “overlaid” her child causing it to die. The distraught, desperate woman exchanged her dead son for the other woman’s baby while its mother was sleeping! As you would expect, a dispute followed. “Thus they spake before the king.” And the king said, ‘Bring me a sword . . . , Divide the child in two, and give half to the one, and half to the other.’ At this point the real mother said, ‘O my lord, give her the living child, and in no wise slay it.’ But the other said, ‘Let it be neither mine nor thine, but divide it.’ Then the king answered . . . ‘Give her the living child, and in no wise slay it; she is the mother thereof.”
In this scripture, the people fearing the king meant they had great respect for him; they stood in awe before him. To fear the Lord does not mean we need to be afraid of him. It means we stand in awe of him, having great respect for him and bow in reverence before him. “The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom . . .” (Proverbs 9:10). Job, who was called the greatest of all the men of the east, was perfect and upright, and one that feared God, and aschewed [avoided] evil (Job 1:1). We certainly have sufficient reasons to serve God with reverence and godly fear!
Those who know the Lord will be delivered from the curse of fear. David said, “Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil; for thou art with me; thy rod [protection] and thy staff [guidance] they comfort me [security]. . . “(Psalms 23:4). The Lord had led, protected and provided for David throughout his life. He knew the Lord and his constant care. He was comforted and secure in this knowledge. Those who have known the Good Shepherd’s care will appreciate and relate to these words of David, who was called by the Lord, “a man after mine own heart . . .” (Acts 13:22).
As we live through these prophesied perilous times of the last days we can expect to encounter some dark valleys and “shadows of death.” Jesus prophesied of “Men’s hearts failing them for fear, and for looking after those things which are coming on the earth . . .” (Luke 21:26). Are we prepared? “Oh, for a faith that will not shrink . . . that when in danger knows no fear; In darkness feels no doubt . . .” (Hymns of the Restoration #278).
Words of another beautiful hymn come to mind: “Because He lives, I can face tomorrow. Because He lives all fear is gone. Because I know He holds the future, And life is worth the living just because He lives!

Francis Harper - Message for 6/1/2018
Dear Ones,
There are two things we as Christians need to do. We need to hear the Lord and we need to do what he says. The ancient Israelites relied upon Moses to hear the Lord. “And they said unto Moses, Speak thou with us, and we will hear: but let not God speak with us. . .” (Exodus 20:19). “. . . and all the people answered with one voice, and said, All the words which the Lord hath said will we do” (Exodus 24:3). On many occasions the children of Israel failed to keep their promise and they suffered.
The Lord wants to communicate with each of us. God introduced his Son on several occasions using these words: “This is my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased. Hear ye him.” (Matthew 3:46 IV; 3:17 KJV; Matthew 17:4 IV; 17:5 KJV; 3 Nephi 5:8; History of the Church, Vol. 1 p 9). Jesus said his sheep would hear his voice and would follow him; “. . . for they know his voice. And a stranger will they not follow, but will flee from him; for they know not the voice of strangers.” (John 10:4-5).
Jesus warned: “And, again, beware of false prophets, who come to you in sheep’s clothing; but inwardly they are ravening wolves. Ye shall know them by their fruits . . .” (Matthew 7:24-25 IV; 7:15-16 KJV). Paul said, “For the time will come when they will not endure sound doctrine; but after their own lusts shall they heap to themselves teachers, having itching ears; And they shall turn away their ears from the truth, and shall be turned unto fables. (2 Timothy 4:3-4). Such people are easy prey for false prophets.
How can we identify “the wolves in sheep’s clothing?” False prophets are often very gifted but they do not bear the fruit of Christ. They use flattery. They speak of things people want to hear. They do not reprove or rebuke. They do not call for repentance. They call poverty the world’s greatest problem, when mankind’s greatest problem is sin! They speak of globalism, unity in diversity, tolerance, multiculturalism. They call “good evil and evil good (Isaiah 5:20).
The true prophets preach and “reprove, rebuke, exhort with all long-suffering and doctrine.” (2 Timothy 4:2). They also encourage, comfort and edify people. They are humble and full of love. They are not entertainers nor do they cater to the flesh. The image of Jesus can be seen in their countenances (Alma 3:28). They are faithful in adversity. They are fearless. They fear only that they might not please God. They teach only as they are led by the Spirit (Doctrine and Covenant 42:5-b). They speak the “words of truth and soberness” (Acts 26:25).
A 90 year old woman from Valdres, Norway, had a vision from God in 1968; fifty years ago. She was alert, reliable and a credible Christian who had a good reputation among all who knew her. She prophesied, “a final war would begin in an unexpected place. A wide-spread luke-warmness would be seen in Christianity. Entertainment, art and culture would invade the churches. The churches would become nearly empty before the coming of Jesus. People will live together without marriage. Television would be filled with violence. The most indecent sex scenes will be shown.
“People from poor countries will stream to Europe and also to Scandinavia. War will come. It will be a short war ending with a nuclear bomb. Only a remnant will remain. Then suddenly Jesus will come. The one who has his sins forgiven, and knows Jesus as his Savior and Lord will be safe.” Tears streamed from the old woman’s eyes as she affirmed she had received this vision from God.
We need to be “constantly in touch with God and tuned to hear his slightest whisper” (Hymns of the Restoration #322). We need to remember: “Whosoever will not hearken unto my words . . . I will require it of him.” (Deuteronomy 18:19).

Moses, who lived about fifteen hundred years before the birth of the Christ-Child, prophesied of Jesus, being raised up as a Prophet like Moses: “The Lord thy God will raise up unto thee (Israel) a Prophet from the midst of thee, of thy brethren (an Israelite), like unto thee (Moses); unto him shall ye hearken; . . . And it shall come to pass, that whosoever will not hearken unto my (God’s) words which he shall speak in my name, I will require it of him. But the prophet, which shall presume to speak a word in my name, which I have not commanded him to speak, . . . even that prophet shall die. And if thou say in thine heart, How shall we know the word which the Lord hath not spoken? When a prophet speaketh in the name of the Lord, if the thing follow not, nor come to pass, that is the thing which the Lord hath not spoken, but the prophet hath spoken it presumptuously . . . (Deuteronomy 18:15-22).
Time vindicates the prophet. Moses was certainly vindicated as a prophet of God by the coming of Jesus, who was “like unto” Moses in so many ways: Both were Israelites who came out of Egypt. Both were spared from death decreed by wicked kings. Both were lawgivers and refused kingdoms of this world. Both were called a prince and appeared as angels of light. The list of their similarities is almost without end.
Time eventually unveils the false prophets also, but by the time the truth is known it may be too late to overcome the results of believing their lies! Jeremiah wrote of false prophets: “Thus saith the Lord of hosts, Hearken not unto the words of the prophets that prophesy unto you; . . . they speak a vision of their own heart, and not out of the mouth of the Lord . . . I am against the prophets, saith the Lord, that use their tongues, and say, He saith. Behold, I am against them that prophesy false dreams, . . . and cause my people to err by their lies, and by their lightness; yet I sent them not, nor commanded them; therefore they shall not profit this people at all, saith the Lord” (Jeremiah 23: 16, 31-32).
The true prophets of God have often been abused, mistreated, imprisoned and slain, for telling the truth. Jesus said, “. . . behold, I send unto you prophets, and wise men, and scribes; and of them ye shall kill and crucify; and of them ye shall scourge in your synagogues, and persecute from city to city” (Matthew 23:31 IV; 23:34 KJV).
Isaiah could have been writing to many in our day when he wrote: “. . . this is a rebellious people, lying children, . . . which say to the seers, See not; and to the prophets, Prophesy not unto us right things, speak unto us smooth things, prophesy deceits; . . . cause the Holy One of Israel to cease from before us” (Isaiah 30:9-11). These are they who “love not the truth” (Romans 1:18, 2 Thessalonians 2:10).
The truth spoken by the prophets of God has rarely been popular with the majority. Jeremiah was cast into prison and was asked by Zedekiah, King of Judah, “Wherefore (why) dost thou prophesy, and say, Thus saith the Lord, Behold, I will give this city into the hand of the king of Babylon. . . ?” (Jeremiah 32:3-5). Later, after he was beaten, “. . . they let down Jeremiah with cords. And in the dungeon there was no water, but mire; so Jeremiah sunk in the mire” (Jeremiah 38:6).
Moses, Isaiah, Jeremiah, Ezekiel, Daniel, Lehi, Nephi, Alma, Joseph Smith Jr., and many others have been vindicated as true prophets of God. Jesus said: “. . . O fools, and slow of heart to believe all that the prophets have spoken!” (Luke 24:24 IV; 24:25 KJV).

Dear Ones,
There are two things we as Christians need to do.
