AUSTRALIAN RESTORATION NEWS

OCTOBER, 2019
Around and About the Centre Place by High Priest Paul J. Gage, Independence, Missouri.

Time marches on and waits for no man, or person. It certainly often seems that time is speeding up or I am getting slower. Doctrine and Covenants 83:16 speaks to the conditions of the world as well as our lives and says "…until I have completed my work, which shall be cut short in righteousness." Verse 17 then speaks of our hope in the Kingdom.
Everything God has done, is doing, and will do is beyond our human comprehension and therefore we lack, to some extent, the ability to truly appreciate God's love.
As the seasons come and go, people make various preparations for each season. Each day of our lives is a "new season," so what do we do to prepare for each day and of course, our life?
Sanctification seems to be an aspect of the gospel that we like to hear about, but don't want to take the action necessary for us to become "sanctified." Sanctification and sacrifice go together, hand in hand. To sanctify our lives, we must sacrifice those things that keep us from being sanctified. This is brought to our attention in Doctrine and Covenants 85:16-21. This scripture is worthy of an in-depth study and application by each one who has made a covenant with the Lord.
Entering God's Kingdom is not an automatic thing that just happens. No one will simply walk into God's Kingdom with no effort to make sure they have on the "wedding garment." This is referenced in Matthew 22:1-14. DC 85 is filled with a great amount of instruction that is given for us to prepare ourselves. Be sure to read verse 20 a and b. In verse b we are told several things that we must do on our own, and yet the major part of the cleansing of our lives is done by the Lord, after we do what we are instructed to do Also see DC 81:3.
There is always an abundance of events, activities, services, etc going on in the Centre Place. One event, of note was the annual CRE Priesthood Retreat in Kirtland, Ohio. The attendance was a little more than in the past few years and included men from 12 states in the USA as well as a representative from Canada and Rwanda. The theme was: "Look Upward, Embrace the Truth (Jesus) and Press forward." Class topics dealt with the difference between a Living organism (Church) and an organization. A first time Sacrament Service was held in the Temple on Saturday evening as was the closing service on Sunday morning. Other activities were held at the Kirtland Restoration Branch.
The Pastors of Zion will sponsor a 5th Sunday service at Waldo Avenue on Sunday, September 29, 2019 which will feature testimonies from Kirtland and a Women's Retreat. The service will be live streamed at:
http:/www.waldoavenuerestorationbranch.org

The CRE missionary groups continue to be very active. Recent missions have been made to England and Germany with other mission trips planned for Africa, Canada, India, Nepal, the Philippines and possibly Russia. The next issue of Tidings of Zion is being printed and should be in the homes by early October. The SEAAM Board also desires to sponsor a mission trip to Australia in 2020.
Center Place Restoration School has successfully completed a matching fund drive for upgrading the school/Waldo facility. There will be more on this in the next Tidings of Zion.
Our prayer for the Saints in Australia and the world is that God will continue to open those doors of ministry to each of us as we work toward sanctifying our lives for His Divine purposes.

Riches From The Scriptures by Elder Neil Kerswell, Queensland, Australia
Vol 4 Chapter 4 Humility & Meekness Today we will look at humility and Meekness, probably two of the most important qualities and gifts we need in our hearts and lives if we are to have any place in the Kingdom of God. If Humility is not a living part of us, we either knowingly or subconsciously seek the place of God in our life and the lives of people around us. As we read from the scriptures, I hope we will awaken to just how necessary Humility and Meekness is in the life of a believer in Jesus Christ.
Luke 18:9-14 [Luke 18:9] He spake this parable unto certain men, who trusted in themselves that they were righteous, and despised others.
[Luke 18:10] Two men went up into the temple to pray; the one a Pharisee, and the other a publican.
[Luke 18:11] The Pharisee stood and prayed thus with himself; God, I thank thee that I am not as other men, extortioners, unjust, adulterers; or even as this publican.
[Luke 18:12] I fast twice in the week; I give tithes of all that I possess.
[Luke 18:13] But the publican, standing afar off, would not lift up so much as his eyes unto heaven, but smote upon his breast, saying, God, be merciful to me a sinner.
[Luke 18:14] I tell you, this man went down to his house justified, rather than the other; for every one who exalteth himself, shall be abased; and he who humbleth himself, shall be exalted.
To help in our understanding the Pharisees were a popular religious Sect of the day and a Publican was a tax collector for the Romans. Christ shared this parable to address certain men who trusted in themselves that they were righteous, and despised others. Over the years we have all seen this trait in the church membership. Satan tries to turn our good desires against us at all times. If he sees someone trying to discipline their own lives towards God in a certain area of life (which is a good thing) he will whisper and tempt them into an unbalanced view of life. I have seen it time and time again where even Ministry will become raised in pride and push one aspect of the Law and completely disregard all else, which leads to an unhealthy branch. The example in this parable is of two men who went to pray in the temple. The Pharisee thanked God he was not like other men and lists their sins, and then he turns his ignorance towards the other man (the publican). Then as we have mentioned already, he focused on the couple of areas in his own life where he was disciplined in and focusing on - of Fasting and paying Tithes. This he did in order to elevate himself and to put down those around him. Let us look at the other man in this parable, the Publican. He stood back, feeling unworthy. He didn’t even want to lift his eyes towards heaven, but smote upon his chest and said God be merciful to me a sinner. Christ tells us in this instance, the Publican went to his house justified, whereas the Pharisee received no such blessing. It’s simple really, we are all unworthy before God in His fullness and must through humility be Justified through God’s love revealed in the personage of Jesus Christ. Whether the Publican understood this or not, his heart was in the right place, he was good building material for God to work with even though most people would have looked down upon him because of his vocation. The Pharisee on the other hand lacked humility and whether realising it or not was seeking to take the place of God through Christ believing he was already righteous. We must examine our own lives and ask God to help us to be humble, especially ministry who have a stewardship to feed Good’s sheep, to feed His Lambs. We are not the gauge by which to measure another’s life. Christ is the only one worthy. Finally the great lesson of this parable is this, everyone who exalts themselves shall be abased.

Deuteronomy 9:1-6 [Deuteronomy 9:1] Hear, O Israel; Thou art to pass over Jordan this day, to go in to possess nations greater and mightier than thyself, cities great and fenced up to heaven,
[Deuteronomy 9:2] A people great and tall, the children of the Anakim, whom thou knowest, and of whom thou hast heard say, Who can stand before the children of Anak!
[Deuteronomy 9:3] Understand therefore this day, that the Lord thy God is he which goeth over before thee; as a consuming fire he shall destroy them, and he shall bring them down before thy face; so shalt thou drive them out, and destroy them quickly, as the Lord hath said unto thee.
[Deuteronomy 9:4] Speak not thou in thine heart, after that the Lord thy God hath cast them out from before thee, saying, For my righteousness the Lord hath brought me in to possess this land; but for the wickedness of these nations the Lord doth drive them out from before thee.
[Deuteronomy 9:5] Not for thy righteousness, or for the uprightness of thine heart, dost thou go to possess their land; but for the wickedness of these nations the Lord thy God doth drive them out from before thee, and that he may perform the word which the Lord sware unto thy fathers, Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob.
[Deuteronomy 9:6] Understand therefore, that the Lord thy God giveth thee not this good land to possess it for thy righteousness; for thou art a stiff-necked people.
God often does well for us, to honour past covenants with our fathers and because of the world’s wickedness, not because of our supposed righteousness. Moses knew the importance of humility. This is very evident in his words. He wanted Israel to understand that although they would go to battle, it was the Lord God that goes before them as a consuming fire to destroy the enemy and it was God who would bring them down. Moses counselled them to speak not in their hearts after God had done these great things that they through their own righteousness had caused God to do these things. But rather because of the wickedness of these nations the Lord God would drive them out from before Israel. Most importantly though, all this would come about because of the covenants God had made with their fathers Abraham, Isaac and Jacob. Ultimately Israel at that time in history were a stiff-necked people riding on the blessings of the past. We are much the same today unless our hearts are turned to the covenants made to our fathers the whole earth shall be smitten with a curse. This became truly possible through the Restoration of Christ’s Church, when light shone in darkness.
Some quotes on Humility and Meekness
[Psalm 10:17] Lord, thou hast heard the desire of the humble; thou wilt prepare their heart, thou wilt cause thine ear to hear;
Psalm 25:4-11 [Psalm 25:4] Show me thy ways, O Lord; teach me thy paths.
[Psalm 25:5] Lead me in thy truth, and teach me; for thou art the God of my salvation; on thee do I wait all the day.
[Psalm 25:6] Remember, O Lord, thy tender mercies and thy loving-kindnesses; for they have been ever of old.
[Psalm 25:7] Remember not the sins of my youth, nor my transgressions; according to thy mercy remember thou me for thy goodness' sake, O Lord.
[Psalm 25:8] Good and upright is the Lord; therefore will he teach sinners in the way.
[Psalm 25:9] The meek will he guide in judgment; and the meek will he teach his way.
[Psalm 25:10] All the paths of the Lord are mercy and truth unto such as keep his covenant and his testimonies.
[Psalm 25:11] For thy name's sake, O Lord, pardon mine iniquity; for it is great.
Although humility is only mentioned in the first verse, both these scriptures are looking at God from a humble perspective in meekness (Humble in Spirit or Manner, Modest). Emphasis is placed on those who keep God’s Covenant and Testimonies.
Psalm 37: 8-11. [Psalm 37:8] Cease from anger and forsake wrath; fret not thyself in any wise to do evil.
[Psalm 37:9] For evildoers shall be cut off; but those that wait upon the Lord, they shall inherit the earth.
[Psalm 37:10] For yet a little while, and the wicked shall not be; yea, thou shalt diligently consider his place, and it shall not be.
[Psalm 37:11] But the meek shall inherit the earth; and shall delight themselves in the abundance of peace.
The Meek who wait upon the Lord inherit the Earth while the wicked are not found.
Psalm 131: 1-3 [Psalm 131:1] Lord, my heart is not haughty, nor mine eyes lofty; neither do I exercise myself in great matters, or in things too high for me. Psalm 131:2] Surely I have behaved and quieted myself, as a child that is weaned of his mother; my soul is even as a weaned child. [Psalm 131:3] Let Israel hope in the Lord from henceforth and forever.
The message is simple here, do not mind high things (Lofty – Proud, feeling like you stand out above others), (Haughty – Having or showing arrogant superiority to, and disdain of people one views as unworthy).
Psalm 147:5-6. Great is our Lord, and of great power; his understanding is infinite.
[Psalm 147:6] The Lord lifteth up the meek he casteth the wicked down to the ground.
[Proverbs 15:32-33.] He that refuseth instruction despiseth his own soul; but he that heareth reproof getteth understanding. [Proverbs 15:33] The fear of the Lord is the instruction of wisdom; and before honor is humility.
[Proverbs 16:17] The highway of the upright is to depart from evil; he that keepeth his way preserveth his soul. [Proverbs 16:18] Pride goeth before destruction, and a haughty spirit before a fall.
[Proverbs 16:19] Better it is to be of an humble spirit with the lowly, than to divide the spoil with the proud.

Luke 1:45-54 [Luke 1:45] And Mary said, My soul doth magnify the Lord,
[Luke 1:46] And my spirit rejoiceth in God my Savior.
[Luke 1:47] For he hath regarded the low estate of his handmaiden; for behold, from henceforth all generations shall call me blessed.
[Luke 1:48] For he who is mighty hath done to me great things; and I will magnify his holy name.
[Luke 1:49] For his mercy on those who fear him from generation to generation.
[Luke 1:50] He hath showed strength with his arm; he hath scattered the proud in the imagination of their hearts.
[Luke 1:51] He hath put down the mighty from their high seats; and exalted them of low degree.
[Luke 1:52] He hath filled the hungry with good things; but the rich he hath sent empty away.
[Luke 1:53] He hath helped his servant Israel in remembrance of mercy,
[Luke 1:54] As he spake to our fathers, to Abraham, and to his seed forever.
Mary testifies here that God truly blesses the people of low estate. To truly understand this we must know what High Estate is (Estate – a major social class or order of persons regarded collectively as part of the sophisticated of the country and formerly possessing distinct political rights. Having extensive personal property), Mary was a humble handmaiden of the Lord, highly favoured, not because she shone in world circles but rather because God loved what He saw in her heart. Romans 12:16-21
[Romans 12:16] Be of the same mind one toward another. Mind not high things, but condescend to men of low estate. Be not wise in your own conceits.
[Romans 12:17] Recompense to no man evil for evil. Provide things honest in the sight of all men.
[Romans 12:18] If it be possible, as much as lieth in you, live peaceably with all men.
[Romans 12:19] Dearly beloved, avenge not yourselves, but rather give place unto wrath; for it is written, Vengeance is mine; I will repay, saith the Lord.
[Romans 12:20] Therefore if thine enemy hunger, feed him; if he thirst, give him drink; for in so doing thou shalt heap coals of fire on his head.
[Romans 12:21] Be not overcome of evil, but overcome evil with good.
As we so often do, let us finish in the way we started. Humility and Meekness are some of the most important qualities and gifts for a believer to have, without which we quickly lose perspective and fall into an unbalanced way of thinking, placing ourselves in the place of God which is a grievous sin. God wants of us to know and understand our place. To know the truth about ourselves so we can be set free through the Ministry and Justification that comes only through Jesus Christ our Lord. A true understanding demands of us to be Humble, Meek and filled with Love. This brings to us a true perspective especially in our dealings with our fellow man and of our attitude towards others of the faith. I hope all of us will recognise Satan’s whispers when we are trying to discipline our lives in any way towards God, we are not better than our fellow man, we are just one of the many Jesus died to save because of our sins and transgressions. Christ is the one who the Heavens proclaim is Worthy. We are washed clean through His blood. Christ stands at the Gate and He employs no servant there. Through His Spirit we are justified, not of ourselves. As Moses said it is God that goes before us and fights the battle as a consuming fire. We in Humility should follow giving him all honour and glory for His greatness and power. If we as believers can get this right in our lives we shall be a lot closer to God and in perfect position to help another. May we all be blessed is my prayer in Jesus name Amen.

The following is the first edition of the new page that we are inserting in the monthly Australian Restoration News. Over the years the Church has found that many faithful members who, for many and varied reasons, have not had the privilege of regular congregational fellowship and access to ministry, were listed as “Isolated” or “Unattached” (meaning to an organized Group or Branch). While this may be geographically true, it is not the only reason many saints are “unattached”. Many live in towns or cities that unfortunately, have no active priesthood. We are hoping that the Australian saints who are in this situation will treat this page as theirs and provide a lot of the content for it. We hope as you share with your fellow readers of the Australian News we will come to know each other and you can be assured that you are an important and integral part of the church and of great worth to your God. I am sure that Srs. Melissa Game and Monique Hummel in future editions of this page, will fire your imaginations by listing suggestions of the many ways you can make your literary contribution to this new addition of the Newsletter.

Francis Harper Message for 9/27/2019

“Lord, Teach us to Pray”
(Luke 11:1)

“And it came to pass, as Jesus was praying in a certain place, when he ceased, one of his disciples said unto him, Lord, teach us to pray, as John also taught his disciples. And he said unto them, when ye pray, say, our Father who art in heaven, hallowed [holy] be thy name. Thy Kingdom come [highest priority], thy will be done as in heaven, so in earth [we need to seek his will in all things]. Give us this day our daily bread [God wants us to have the necessities of life. He will answer our prayers for these things]. And forgive us our sins as we also forgive everyone who is indebted to us. [We cannot expect to be forgiven until we forgive those who have sinned against us]. Let us not be led into temptation. Deliver us from evil” (Luke 11:1-4). See also Matthew 6:10-15 IV; 6:9-13 KJV.

Peter wrote: “The Lord knoweth how to deliver the godly out of temptation” [and addictions] (2 Peter 2:9). Peter was quite likely speaking from personal experience. I too can bear witness to the truth of Peter’s statement. “For it is by grace that we are saved after all we can do” (2 Nephi 11:44).
Jesus also taught that we should be persistent in our prayers. He asked: “which of you shall have a friend, and shall go unto him at midnight, and say unto him, Friend, lend me three loaves; for a friend of mine has come to me in his journey, and I have nothing to set before him; And he from within shall answer and say, Trouble me not; the door is now shut, and my children are with me in bed; I cannot rise and give thee. I say unto you, though he will not rise and give him because [even though] he is his friend, yet because of his importunity [persistent solicitation], he will rise and give him as many as he needeth (Luke 11:6-9).
The Lord responds to an urgent prayer of faith. Evidence of this is recorded in Matthew 15:21-27: “And, behold, a woman of Canaan came out of the same coasts, and cried unto him, saying, Have mercy on me, O Lord, thou son of David; my daughter is grievously vexed with a devil. But he answered her not a word. And his disciples came and besought him, saying, Send her away; for she crieth after us. He answered, I am not sent but unto the lost sheep of the house of Israel. Then came she and worshipped him, saying, Lord, help me. But he answered and said, It is not meet [appropriate] to take the children’s bread, and cast it to dogs. And she said, Truth, Lord; yet the dogs eat the crumbs that fall from the master’s table. Then Jesus answered and said unto her, O woman, great is thy faith; be it unto thee even as thou wilt. And her daughter was made whole that very hour.” And thus we see “the prayer of faith shall save the sick” (James 5:15).
It was the faith of a Centurion, a gentile, that brought healing to his servant. Jesus said to his disciples, “Verily I say unto you, I have not found so great faith; no, not in Israel. . . . And Jesus said unto the Centurion, Go thy way, and as thou hast believed, so be it done unto thee. And his servant was healed in the self-same hour” (Matthew 8:10, 13). Faith is the key to answered prayer. “Lord, I believe; help thou mine unbelief” (Mark 9:21 IV; 9:24 KJV).
Faith is honored by the Lord wherever it is found; whether in Israel, latter day Israel, or elsewhere. As Jesus said: “And I say unto you, that many shall come from the east, and the west, and shall sit down with Abraham, and Isaac, and Jacob, in the Kingdom of heaven” (Matthew 8:11).
“Behold I say unto you, that ye must pray always, and not faint; that ye must not perform anything unto the Lord, save [until] in the first place ye shall pray unto the Father in the name of Christ, that he will consecrate thy performance . . .” (2 Nephi 14:12).

Dear Ones,

A scripture often quoted by the Restoration Saints is James 1:5-7: “If any of you lack wisdom, let him ask of God, that giveth to all men liberally, and upbraideth [condemns] not; and it shall be given him. But let him ask in faith, nothing wavering; for he that wavereth is like a wave of the sea driven with the wind and tossed. For let not that man think that he shall receive anything from the Lord.”
I have learned that Spirit directed prayers are always answered. In January of 1984, my father, Francis, Sr., and I were asked to pray for Phyllis Peterson as it is prescribed in James 5:14-15: “Is any sick among you? Let him call for the elders of the church; and let them pray over him, anointing him with oil in the name of the Lord; And the prayer of faith shall save the sick, and the Lord shall raise him up; and if he have committed sins, they shall be forgiven him.” This was only two months before my father’s death. He anointed and I offered the confirmation prayer.
Phyllis and her husband had joined the church in 1980. It had been our joy and privilege to help with the cottage meetings in their home and to see them respond fully to the message of the Restored Gospel of Jesus Christ. They asked for baptism even before the cottage meeting series was completed.
After becoming members of the church, Phyllis began experiencing pain and she consulted with the doctors. They x-rayed and found a large tumor in her uterus. It was so large that it was pressing against her internal organs, thus causing her a considerable amount of pain. Surgery was scheduled.
The Sunday before the scheduled surgery Phyllis asked for the prayers of administration that I have already mentioned. As I was offering the confirmation prayer I prayed for a healing, then I added these words, “But if surgery is necessary, direct the doctors in their work.”
As we were returning home from church, I mentioned to my wife how I had prayed for a healing when surgery was already scheduled? Perhaps I should have just prayed the doctors would be blessed in their work?
Phyllis entered the hospital at the scheduled time that week. She was taken to the operating room at the hour scheduled for her surgery, but during the final x-rays the doctors discovered the tumor was gone! The surgery would not be necessary. She was released from the hospital. Two weeks later she returned for a checkup and the doctor told her she would not need to return.
From this experience I learned that Spirit directed prayers are always answered in God’s perfect timing. John taught that our prayers should always be in agreement with God’s will. He wrote: “And this is the confidence that we have in Him, that if we ask anything according to His will, He heareth us; And if we know that He hear us, whatsoever we ask, we know that we have the petitions that we desire of Him (1 John 5:14-15). “Let us therefore come boldly [with full assurance and confident faith] unto the throne of grace, that we may obtain mercy, and find grace to help in time of need” (Hebrews 4:16).
The effectual fervent prayer of a righteous man availeth much” (James 5:16). “Our prayers are much availing if we walk upright and just.” (“Let us pray for one another.” Hymns of the Restoration. #63).

My Love to All,

High Priest Francis Harper

Saturday's Neighborhood Cleanup Day Needs

Hello, IIAW Friends,

Our Cleanup Day is this Saturday, September 28th. We have the following needs:

Trucks to haul brush and trash
Sugar Creek Residents who are willing to donate 1 or more of their dumping passes
Volunteers with proof of KC,MO residency – MO drivers license or utility bill statement, who can ride with our haulers to the Kansas City Brush Dump
Donations to cover dumping fees
Donations to cover the cost of IIAW T-shirts and yard signs
Potluck breakfast items (finger foods – rolls, pastries, fruit and juices)

Scattered rain is in the forecast for Saturday, so volunteers dress appropriately for wet conditions underfoot. Pray for conducive weather conditions. Cloudy is workable, and sprinkling, but heavy rain is not. We will meet for the breakfast/fellowship regardless. We can use the time for strategizing, planning, and prayer.

Please contact Muriel Luedeman at 816-725-8425, mur620@gmail.com by Friday, if you can help with the above items.

Kingdom Building Encouragement

From: Muriel Luedeman
mur620@gmail.com

Kingdom Building Encouragement

Dear, Friends,

Muriel Luedeman here. I have a wonderful experience to tell you.

As an artist, I have been involved in many creative endeavors. The beautiful, positive things I see happening in Independence in the past 10 months is nothing short of astounding. The people I am working with every day now are so highly creative, although most would not think of themselves as artists. But I see the things they do as works of art. The way Ramona Austin organized my art studio and rearranged it, was a work of art. Brother Dennis Cato “created” in the Initiative, a beautiful platform for community transformation. The way Billy and Cheri Tharp, and their team designed the sanctuary in the Unity Center is artistic and creative as they make the area inviting for the Holy Spirit and worshippers. Pastor Brian and Team Jesus create an atmosphere of love and home every time they provide hot meals and shower blessings for the Beloveds. The neighborhood cleanup days create order and beauty in every work assignment. What we all are doing is VERY artistic.

This past April, I met a woman by Divine Appointment at a conference on Community Spiritual Transformation. We got acquainted at the lunch break. When she learned I had worked for Hallmark, she said she is an artist, though she never thought of herself that way until she found a website called Thriving Christian Artists. It was founded by Matt Tommey, a basket maker from South Carolina. I looked him up and found a treasure of amazing, mobilizing information that not only inspired my artistic efforts, but also gave me so much wonderful Divine Inspiration on the Kingdom building process that is going on in the Independence/KC metro area. Matt Tommey was a self-sustained youth minister/worship leader for many years. He has the heart of a teacher and servant/leader. His talk is all about God calling and raising up an army of His sons and daughters to become artists and people of influence in building the Kingdom all over world. I was hooked from the first insight he shared online. It was right down my alley and what is happening in the Independence Is Alive and Well Initiative.

Recently, Tommey created a 5-part video series called Artist Rise Up. They encapsulate what he teaches in his online mentoring program. He had so much great information, I transcribed all 5 videos into WORD documents, thinking of all the Initiative members and other Kingdom minded friends who would benefit from reading them. It is vital for anyone who has a heart for the Kingdom to understand that God wants us to live the Kingdom and step into Kingdom building work with a daily focus. There is a Kingdom mindset and a knowledge to be had of how the Kingdom of God on earth works. Matt Tommey shares that as he talks about God raising up an army of artists for these special times. Though his focus is on artists and talks mostly about painters, poets, potters, song writers, dancers, actors, etc., please interject any other kind of work, skill and talent in place of “artist”. You may be a plumber, a nurse, a fry cook, or own a farm, and not think of yourself as an artist. But you are also involved in a very artistic and creative enterprise as you move into doing something to improve the quality of life for your community. The bottom line is that we are created in God’s image. God is creative, so therefore we all are creative, too. And the Kingdom is built through artistic creative vision, thinking, and then effort to bring it all into reality.

The videos are about 20 minutes long, the first one is four pages of print. I have attached Part 1. I will send the others as I finish them. I pray you will be tremendously blessed by these inspired, encouraging words. They were meant for this day, this place, and this people, as we align ourselves with God’s plan for this community.

I would love to hear if you like the series, and feedback after you read them. I thank and praise God for all of you, and all you are doing.

Artist Rise Up 5 Part Video Series

Transcribed by Muriel Luedeman September 2019

Well hey there, it’s Matt Tommey and I’m so glad you’re with me on this very first video of the Artist Rise Up Series, this 5-part series I hope is really going to be a big blessing in your life. As I was praying about this and trying to get the mind of the Lord for this series, I felt impressed by the Lord to go back to the beginnings of when God called as a father to artists, to raise up an army of artists. Because you know, I think it’s so important for all of us as creatives, to realize that we are all a part of something so much bigger than just our artwork. We are a part of a huge community all over the world of people who love Jesus, who are anointed with His creative nature, His creative DNA inside of us, and He’s positioned us in places uniquely in the earth, in this generation, at this time, in this place, to do a really unique work on His behalf, as His sons and daughters, and as His ambassadors.
I don’t know about you, but sometimes it’s very easy to lose track of that. It’s really easy to get into the weeds, of you will, of I have to make the art, sell the art. Oh, I can’t find my clients. What do I do? Nobody gets me at church! My family doesn’t understand me! All this kind of thing, and it’s east to disconnect from the larger story. I want to say this, you and I are a part of a much bigger story. We’re a part of a movement that God is raising up all over the world, to release His nature into the earth through His sons and daughters, those of us who are creatives. And of course, all over the Body of Christ. We’re just one part of this story, but it’s an incredible story to be a part of.
If you’ve been an artist for very long at all, you know that, especially for believers, there can be this real disconnect and misunderstanding between how thriving artistically, spiritually, in business, or ministry, how we are disconnected sometimes from our spiritual life, because a lot of times we’ve not seen a dynamic display of what it means to connect with how the Kingdom works, to thrive in building a business, to get our work out there to operate well in the marketplace.
I know for me, for many years, and so many artists I talk to in the mentoring program, they’re like, “Yeah, this is so refreshing because the only view I’ve had of life and of art has been an insulated view of the church, “inside the four walls of the church”. Should art be in the church? Absolutely! Should art bless the church, be in worship? Absolutely! I believe that you and I as artists, and out talent, the gifting that God has given us, can bless the church, but it (our art) is meant for the marketplace. And unless you and I learn to thrive and really function in the marketplace, or in business, or in ministry, by marketplace I mean culture, all right? Outside the four walls of the church. Unless you learn to get comfortable with that and operate in the fullness of who God’s called you to be, there can be this real struggle back and forth. And I see this all the time. Artists coming to me going, “Man, I can’t figure this out.” “I don’t know how this fits into my larger calling from the Lord.” “How is He going to use me?” “I don’t know anything about business.”
There is lots and lots of frustration. And that’s what this series is about. I want to begin to bring you come context, not only from God’s word, but also my experience in mentoring thousands of artists now, over the years, through my books, conferences that I host, through the Created to Thrive mentoring program. Seeing real fruit that’s happened not only in my life, enabling me to build a six-figure, art business, while learning to listen to the Lord, and be used by Him to release transformation in my circle of influence. And then taking those same methods, those same patterns that God has worked inside of me, and teaching those to other artists like you, who can take that and replicate that in your life. Again, nuance it in a way that works for you. Just like Paul said, “Follow me as I follow
Christ,” and that is what this series is all about. I want you to feel very comfortable by the end of this. You will. You will know exactly how to begin to step into your calling, creatively, artistically, spiritually, and in the marketplace or ministry, whatever God’s called you to, so, isn’t that exciting? It’s really going to be great.
I want to ask the Lord right now:
Father, in Jesus’ name, I pray You would use this, Lord. Open our hearts to You. God, I thank you that the things You’re going to speak through me during this series, are the fruit of the things You have done in my life, and in other people’s lives, through the truth, right out of Your word. And God, I pray that You connect us to the larger story of what you are doing in the earth and raising up this army of artists. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
I want to jump into a few details about the “Why”. I get a lot of questions, because when you think “art” and you think “army”, they don’t really go together. You say, “What is God doing with raising up and army of artists? What does that even look like?” And I think the first thing to realize is that when you look at God’s word, especially the Old Testament, it was always the creative ones, the worshippers that went first. Why? To prepare the way. You’re creative expression, my creative expression, whether it’s music, dance, painting, poetry. For me it’s basketry, and I lead worship. I do all of that as a creative expression. When we invite the Holy Spirit into that, it becomes a vehicle through which God can not only minster to you, but also use what you’re offering to Him to minister to others, and to release His nature. In fact, that’s how the Kingdom works.
A lot of people are confused about that. They think you’re just supposed to pray, and God does everything, but guess what? God’s already determined that He has chosen to use you and use me, His sons and daughters, as the vehicle through which He wants to move in the earth. And see that may be something that’s brand new to you. You say, “Wow, I’ve been waiting on God to move,” and guess what? He’s waiting on you! Not that you’ve got to have it all together, because he’s not looking for your perfection. He’s looking for your “YES”. He’s looking for you to be able to say, “Yes, Lord, the thing that You’ve put in me, the thing that I’ve been afraid to think was really important, the thing that I’ve loved all these years, but nobody ever had a context for it, and my church didn’t understand it, and I didn’t take it seriously, and it was a place of wounding, maybe, in your heart early on or whatever, and life got in the way, yeah that thing, that thing is the thing that God wants to use as a vehicle to release His glory, and to also, allow you to live the abundant life.
Did you know that you living the abundant life is tied to your willingness to lean into the design of God in your life? Listen, the more you become the you that God designed you to be, the more you’re going to be able to step into the fullness of who God has designed you to be, and do the things He’s called you to do. And, oh my gosh, it’s embarrassing, because life gets so good! Does is mean that everything goes right all the time and that everything’s coming up roses? No! But it means that there’s a solidness, a surety inside of you, a foundational core inside that says, “Yes. I am an artist. I am somebody that God has designed specifically for this purpose, and I’m not alone. I’m part of this army that God is raising up.”
I see it all the time, when artists begin to link arms with each other, when we begin to encourage each other, when we begin to get vision from each other and say, “Wow, if God did it in Matt’s life, or her life, maybe He could do in im my life,” and faith begins to rise, and we begin to become the army of God that He’s designed for us to be. Not an army of taking over, not an army of political power, but
an army of LOVE, an army of God’s nature, an army of creative expression that says, “Lord, everything I am, and everything You’ve given me, and everything I create, Lord, I offer back to You, as a way for You to use to release Your nature to the people that need it.” That is when real transformation starts happening in your life, and in the lives of people around you.
You know, the enemy know this, because he was a creative. In Heaven, many theologians believe Lucifer was the worship leader in Heaven. He was around the Throne of God. In fact, when the wind of God would blow in the throne room, the Bible says in Ezekiel, that Lucifer’s body, he didn’t just play an instrument, he was an instrument. That when the wind would move through him, suddenly holy, worthy, he would literally begin to resonate with the glory of God. Can you imagine an army of artists, musicians, creatives, worshippers, who would begin to resonate with the glory of God in everything they do? Not just as individuals, but as a movement? See, the enemy know that power of that, which is why there is an all-out assault on creative all over the world from the beginning of time? Why? Because the enemy knows the power of the creative nature of God flowing through His people, and he want to do everything he can to stop it.
Maybe, you’ve felt that. I’ve felt it in my own life. I know so many artists who have struggled with identity issues, with self-abasement, and self-doubt, anxiety, fear and self-sabotage, thinking they’re not worthy, they’re not good enough, that God could never use them, or their work is not important enough, or it’s not churchy enough, or religious enough, or not serious enough. And what does that do? All of that confuses the mind and keeps us focused and walking in a way that is away from our calling, instead of walking into the fullness of our calling.
This is not about you and I being talented, because God’s not raising up just more talented people for talent’s sake. He’s raising up sons and daughters, and I believe, as we step into our place in this army, this army of dry bones, if you will, that is being raised up by the breath of God, as we begin to stand up into that, I believe God is fighting on our behalf, to say, “Yes. That’s my son; that’s my daughter. I’, going to begin to open the doors in this generation, to release my nature through them, so that they can really be who I’ve called them to be, so that my nature can cover the earth like the waters cover the sea.”
My friend, that is incredibly powerful! And that’s the major reason why I believe at the forefront of this movement, ever since God called me in 2009, at the forefront of this movement has been healing of artists. As you and I can’t walk as sons and daughters, then we’re never going to be able to carry the full measure of what God wants to do in and through us.
Now, another thing I want to call your attention to is about why artists? Why now? Why this army of artists? What is it about this rising thriving artists that coming on to the scene right now? I believe that the creative process is actually a mirror process of how the Kingdom works in general.
The Lord showed me early on in my career as an artist, as I began to step into this whole realm, that the nature of the Kingdom is not to follow a bunch of rules and to be all caught up in this religious grid, mindset, and all this kind of thing, and locked up. No, the nature of the Kingdom is just like the creative process. What is that? To see and agree. You get an idea for a painting, a song, or whatever it is. You see it in your mind’s eye. God begins to impress that on your heart, and when you agree with that, you open the door and say, “Yeah, come on through; I want to release that; I want to bring that to life, into reality.” And suddenly, through the work of your hands, that thing begins to come into
incarnation. That thing that used to be just an idea, actually comes into the “flesh”, to the real, to the tangible. Well, that’s the same way the Kingdom works in all aspects.
In business, and government, and family, and in whatever. God shows His sons and daughters things and when we say, “Yes,” then we become a conduit through which God can work. And so I believe one of the big, big reasons God is raising up this army of artists all over the world is as they have always been, or we have always been, I should say, as forerunners. Not to celebrate us. Not to say, “Look at us, we’re the artists; we’re the special ones.” No, but for us to demonstrate to the rest of the Body of Christ, and yes, to the world, who doesn’t know Jesus, this is the Good News of the Kingdom, that there’s a Father who love you, who wants to flow in abundance and beauty through your life, and all he’s looking for is not you perfection, because Jesus perfected the work on the cross. All He’s looking for in your life is a “YES”.
When we begin to move like that, and an army of artists, demonstrating that process, as a normal party of what we do, not only in our artwork, but also in how we live our lives with others, we become ones, not only who create signs and wonders, who are creating work that God works through, but we become, our lives become the signs and wonders, and that is huge.
The other thing I really believe about life in the Kingdom, is that its’ made for the marketplace. Did Jesus go to the synagogue, to the temple? Yes, He went to the temple, but He spent most of His time where? Among the people in the marketplace. And listen, Christians have been so scared for so long to really learn how to function, naturally in the marketplace that when it come to having a business, or being in the marketplace as artists, and people who really love Jesus, people don’t know how to do it!
And this has been the most beautiful journey over these last 25 years for me, of learning to develop my identity in the Lord, and they step into the marketplace and see God bless the work of my hands, so that I’m not working some dead-end job that I hate, but I’m receiving my provision in line with my assignment, so that I can flow fully, at all time, in the thing that God’s called me in, and do so in the context of relationships. Why? Because the Kingdom’s always about relationship. It’s not about the things you and I create, it’s about the people and the relationships we impact, and God uses our art, or any product, or experience, as intersection points in order for you to build relationships and be that touch point for people. When we begin to do this as an army of artists, people will begin to see a demonstration of the Kingdom and the Glory of God like they’ve never, ever seen before.
“But Matt, this looks different. I’ve never heard of this before.” Yeah, welcome to the party. Welcome to the journey of the Kingdom. This is what God’s doing in this generation.
I love that quote I heard a pastor say one time, “If you would do the best with your life, fund out what God is doing in your generation, and fling yourself into it.” That’s what this video series is all about, an invitation to go all in, to say, “Yes. I want to fling myself, even though I’m scared, even though I don’t know what it’s going to look like, I’m going fling myself into this calling of being and artist, not because I’m perfect, not because I’ve got it all together, but because I’m just going to say, “Yes, and trust God in me, to perfect the work along the way.”
I’m glad you’re here with me on this journey. The next video is about the marks of a thriving artist. What does it look like to be a thriving artist? There are five things the Lord has shown me over the years that every thriving artist will begin to demonstrate in their live, and I’m going to walk you through those in detail, out of my experience, out of the Created to Thrive mentoring program
teachings. I’ll give you a little bit of that, as well as out of God’s word, to show you what it means to walk and live as a thriving artist.
Father, thank you for this time today. Lord, I pray as my friend is watching this, You would use this as a catalyst in their life to wake them up and connect them with what You’re doing in this generation, as you raise up an army of artists. In Jesus’ name. Amen.

Independence Is Alive and Well Activities

Dear IIAW Friends,

Please read and pass along the attached flyer for our next cleanup day, September 28th. Our next area of service will be along South Crysler Avenue from 23rd Street to Lexington Avenue. We will gather for a light continental potluck breakfast at 7:30am and head out for the workday between 8:00 and 8:15. Also, please let Muriel Luedeman know if you are able to work this event. 816-726-8425, mur620@gmail.com

The Initiative has come a long way in a very short time. The Unity Center is ministering even in the midst of renovation of the building. The Beloveds are being served and word is getting out that services and community helps are available. The Neighborhood Transformation Committee is actively engaged, starting with our first neighborhood cleanup day which occurred August 10th. Eight homes were served along South Cottage, Delaware, Mc Coy, Stone, and South Avenue. The response from the neighbors was gratifying and some want to help organize future projects. Praise Him!

IIAW is working to expand our base of volunteers so we can make a greater impact on our community and enthusiasm remains strong. Yard signs and t shirts are in the works, which will tell people that we exist and about who we are.

Every IIAW member and friend can help. Let people know about what the Initiative is doing. Invite them to our meetings to learn more and lend a hand.
