In Memory of Donnel Eugene Etter

In Memory of Donnel Eugene Etter
June 7, 1936 – November 26, 2019
Donnel E. Etter is now in the presence of God's eternal love after passing from this life on November 26, 2019, at 7:27 PM.
A visitation will be held on Saturday, November 30, from 9-10:00 a.m., with funeral service at 10:00 a.m., both at Speaks Suburban Chapel, 18020 E 39 Street, in Independence. Interment will follow in Mound Grove Cemetery.
Donnel was born on June 7, 1936, in Independence, MO, the son of James Etter and Lanora Etter (née Epperly). He was a graduate of Van Horn High School in the school’s first graduating class of 1956 and served in the US Army Reserves (infantry) for nine years. He completed an art correspondence course which enabled him to earn a position as a commercial artist for Farmland Industries. He worked at Farmland Industries as an illustrator and designer, as well as constructing, designing, and managing trade show booths for regional shows. He then went to work for KC Metro as a bus driver for ten years until his retirement.
On July 13, 1958, he married Eldora M. Sweeney, and to this union were born two children, Mark and Ryan. Donnel was active in his church; he was an Elder of the Mount Washington RLDS congregation, and later, at the Hill Cumorah Restoration Branch for over 30 years. Despite his dyslexia, he was inspired to write, and became a published author. He and Eldora went on church history trips to Nauvoo, and they also traveled for leisure to destinations like Florida, Vancouver, Seattle, and Biloxi. He could (and would!) talk to anyone; he never knew a stranger. He was a talented painter, sculptor, and woodcarver, and his artwork remains displayed in his home and in his church. The larger-than-life painting of Jesus that hangs in the staircase at the Waldo Restoration Branch was painted by Donnel when Mark and Ryan were small. Mark remembers the oil painting lying flat on sawhorses in Donnel’s basement art studio while it was being created. Donnel found heavenly beauty in nature, and that was exhibited with his landscaping and gardening skills.
Donnel is survived by his wife of 61 years, Eldora, of the home; sons Mark A. Etter (wife Jill), of Blue Springs, MO and Ryan L. Etter (wife Kristin) of Lee’s Summit, MO; grandchildren, Jacob, Savannah, Caleb, Kyle, Rosemary, and Noah; sister, Namar Foster (husband Vern), of Loveland, OH; sister-in-law, Donna Rall (husband Marshall) of Independence, MO; and several extended family and dear friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents, James and Lenora Etter; brother, Neldon Etter; and sister, Marna Burgess.

Ministry to the Homeless
Another winter is upon us and the needs and provision for the homeless is critical.
Many saints have expressed a burden and interest in helping the homeless and don't know quite how help. These desires come from the heart of the Father; He has provided many opportunities to service this great need in our community.
This Saturday, November 30, 8:00am-12:30, The Unity Center and Team Jesus will be serving the homeless Beloveds with food, personal items, and clothing. The center's address is 803 W 23 Street, Independence MO.
If you want to help, contact Muriel Luedeman at mur620@gmail.com or 816-726-8425.

Repentance
Paul wrote: “. . . all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God; Therefore being justified only by his grace through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus; Whom God has set forth to be a propitiation [atonement-forgiveness] through faith in his blood, to declare his righteousness for the remission of sins that are past . . .” (Romans 3:23-24). This is the heart of the gospel of Jesus.
Since all of us have sinned, all of us need to come to Jesus with broken and contrite hearts; repenting and seeking the remission of our sins. What a blessing it is to have our sins forgiven. Without a doubt, this is our greatest blessing, for which we should be most grateful!
Paul mentioned: “the remission of sins that are past.” The phrase, “for sins that are past,” should get our attention because after we receive a remission of our past sins we invariably sin again! How often do we get through a single day without doing, saying, or thinking, something that is sinful? Although we try to be Christ-like in all we do, say and think each day, we must admit we rarely walk without blame. Therefore it is necessary for us to seek a remission of our sins nearly every day.
John the Baptist “came into all the country about Jordan, preaching the baptism of repentance for the remission of sins” (Luke 3:3). He also warned the people: “Bring forth therefore fruits worthy of [proof of] repentance” (Luke 3:13). If we expect to receive the remission of our sins we must make an honest effort to live a Christ-like life.
Proof that Jesus has the power to forgive our sins was shown “when they brought to him a man sick of the palsy . . . and Jesus knowing their faith, said unto the sick of the palsy, Son, be of good cheer; thy sins be forgiven thee; go thy way and sin no more” (Matthew 9:2). “And the scribes and Pharisees began to reason, saying, Who is this that speaketh blasphemies? Who can forgive sins but God alone? But Jesus perceived their thoughts, and he said unto them . . . Does it require more power to forgive sins than to make the sick rise up and walk? But that ye may know that the Son of Man hath power to forgive sins, I said it. And he said unto the sick of the palsy, I say unto thee, Arise, and take up thy couch, and go unto thy house. And immediately he rose up before them . . . and departed to his own house” (Luke 5:21-24).
Both King David, and his son Solomon, who succeeded him as King of Israel, were gross sinners. David was guilty of adultery and murder. Solomon had 700 wives and 300 concubines and was guilty of idolatry; after the Lord had appeared unto him twice! Although both father and son were vile sinners only one of them was forgiven. 1 Kings 11:33, tells the story. “His [Solomon’s] heart is become as David his father; and he repenth not as David his father, that I may forgive him.” What a difference repentance made!
This one verse of scripture; 1 Kings 11:33, should be enough to convince all of us, how vital and important it is for us to repent. Even though David had broken at least three of the ten commandments, he repented and was forgiven!
David’s prayer for the remission of his sins can be used as a guide as we ask the Lord for his forgiveness: “Have mercy upon me, O God . . . For I acknowledge my transgressions; and my sin is ever before me . . . Create in me a clean heart, O God; and renew a right spirit within me. Cast me not away from thy presence; and take not thy Holy Spirit from me” (Psalm 51).

Dear Ones,
Have you ever asked a parent of several children which child they love most? Almost always they will answer they love them all. The father of the prodigal son loved both of his sons. The parables of the lost sheep and the prodigal son were told by the Lord Jesus to illustrate our Heavenly Father’s love for all of us; even when we go astray. He patiently waits and watches for our return.
When the prodigal “was yet a great way off, his father saw him, and had compassion, and ran, and fell on his neck, and kissed him. And the son said unto him, Father, I have sinned against heaven, and in thy sight, and am no more worthy to be called thy son” (Luke 15:20-21).
I recall an occasion in my life when I feared that I had offended my father. When I began to relate to him my desire to apologize, he immediately interrupted my apology and assured me that he had already forgiven me. I saw in my earthly father, the love of my Father in heaven. He could detect, without my confession, my genuine sorrow and fear that my behavior had offended him. Like my father, our Heavenly Father is quick to forgive a person who has a heart-felt sorrow for their sin. As David expressed it: “a broken and contrite heart, O God, thou wilt not despise” (Psalm 51:17)
Persons are not always aware of their sinfulness. The Lord was speaking to the citizens of Judah through the prophet Jeremiah when he said: “. . . thou hast played the harlot with many lovers; return again unto me, saith the Lord . . . thou hadst a whore’s forehead, thou refusedst to be ashamed” (Jeremiah 3:1, 3). Many of us who call ourselves Christians are guilty of harlotry when we put things of the world ahead of our covenant with God. We need to be “awakened to a lively sense of our own guilt” and repent before it is too late. See Mosiah 1:83-88.
In the presence of the Lord and the Holy Spirit we become aware of our spiritual condition. When Peter recognized Jesus as the Son of God, “he fell at Jesus’ knees, saying, Depart from me; for I am a sinful man, O Lord” (Luke 5:8). We see ourselves more clearly when we walk in the light of God.
Perhaps you recall the joy you felt when you received an assurance of the Lords forgiveness. I remember a time I experienced this joy. It was while I was attending Iowa State University. During a Sunday morning service of the Lord’s Supper, during which I sensed the presence of the Holy Spirit, I felt a particular need for a cleansing. I asked God for this blessing and for an assurance that he had heard my prayer and had made me clean. I experienced the cleansing fire of the Holy Ghost as it fell upon me that morning. It was a glorious release! A captive had been set free! As with Enos, “my guilt was swept away” (Enos 1:8).
I recall after the service, going to work at a cafeteria. I was the cashier and had an opportunity to greet each person as they came through the line. I am not certain that the people noticed a change in me that day, but I did. Suddenly, I had become sincerely interested in each person as they paid for their meal. Again, as with Enos, “I began to feel a desire for the welfare of my brethren” (Enos 1:12). I was solicitous of their needs. I loved them! I had been filled with the Spirit.
Oh, how wonderful it is to be touched by the transforming power of the Holy Ghost; to be assured of the Lord’s forgiveness and to feel the great joy that always accompanies such an experience. It becomes a precious need. We become filled with a holy hunger for more of the same.

There is a link below for a video walk-thru. Feel free to call or text me with any questions. This won't last long, so please don't procrastinate. I'd really like it to go to a church member.

Francis Harper Message for 11/22/2019
In God We Trust
I was only twelve years old when my grandmother Harper died. She lived across the road from our home. She was nearly blind and would often ask me to read scripture to her. After a reading she would explain the meaning of it, and would often share a related testimony. One scripture she emphasized was Jeremiah 17: 5-7. “Cursed be the men that trusteth in man and maketh flesh his arm; . . . Blessed is the man that trusteth in the Lord, and whose hope the Lord is.” Those who trust in their own wisdom and judgment, or that of others, are often disappointed.
There are those whose purpose is to deceive us. All of us are acquainted with the “scam artists.” Paul wrote: God called “apostles, prophets, evangelists, pastors and teachers that we henceforth be no more children, tossed to and fro, and carried about with every wind of doctrine, by the sleight of men, and cunning craftiness, whereby they lie in wait to deceive” (Ephesians 4:11,14).
In the coming year, election year, many will be saying “lo here, and lo there.” Who can we trust? During the Civil War the sentiment of many persons within our nation was that we needed to place our trust in God. On November 13, 1861, a letter was received by the Bureau of the Mint proposing that the words “In God we Trust” be placed on our coins. In 1863, the US Congress officially declared In God We Trust as our national motto.
Our nation’s motto, printed on every bill and coin of our money, should serve as a reminder that it is God we can trust who “hath made and preserved us a nation” (The Star Spangled Banner). How wonderful it would be if every person, of every family, in all the nations of the world, would adopt In God We Trust, as their motto. But we must remember printing these four words on our money is only the beginning. We must not be satisfied until the words are imprinted within our hearts and minds and are revealed in our lives.
Alma counseled his son Helaman to trust in God: “O remember my son, and learn wisdom in thy youth; yea, learn in thy youth to keep the commandments of God; yea, and cry unto God for all thy support; yea, let all thy doings be unto the Lord, and whithersoever thou goest, let it be in the Lord; yea, let thy thoughts be directed unto the Lord; yea, let the affections of thy heart be placed upon the Lord for ever; counsel the Lord in all thy doings, and he will direct thee for good: yea, when thou liest down at night, lie down unto the Lord, that he may watch over you in your sleep; and when thou risest in the morning, let your heart be full of thanks unto God; and if ye do these things, ye shall be lifted up at the last day” (Alma 17:68-70).
Alma also counseled his son Shiblon: “And now my son Shiblon, I would that ye should remember that as much as ye shall put your trust in God, . . . ye shall be delivered out of your trials, and your troubles, and your afflictions; and ye shall be lifted up at the last day. Now my son, I would not that ye should [think] that I know these things of myself, but it is the Spirit of God which is in me, which maketh these things known to me” (Alma 18:5-6).
Alma’s counsel to his sons so long ago, is still good for all the sons of earth today. As God said, “For I am the Lord, I change not” (Malachi 3:6). We can safely trust in him as individuals, and as a nation.
I will finish this message by a few more words from Alma: “I have been supported under trials and troubles of every kind, yea, and in all manner of afflictions . . . yea, God has delivered me . . . and I do put my trust in him . . . and I know that he will raise me up at the last day, to dwell with him in glory; yea, and I will praise him for ever” (Alma 17:25-26). This is Alma’s Thanksgiving message.

Dear Ones,
Where wilt thou put thy trust? No! Place thy trust above this shadowed
In a frail form of clay that to its realm of night, In Him whose boundless power
element of dust must soon resolve away? And love Thy confidence invite
(Hymns of the Restoration. #206).
Near the end of my term of service with the U.S. Army, it was required of me to take a joint inventory with the officer who was replacing me. All the property, valued at many thousands of dollars, had to be accounted for piece by piece. After days of tedious counting, everything checked out pretty well except for blankets and barracks bags. We were short a few hundred of each of these. The shortages were valued at more than three thousand dollars, and if the missing items were not found, I would have to pay for them out of my own pocket!
We counted the blankets and barracks bags again, but some were still missing. I shared my problem with my fellow officers and was counseled that I didn’t have anything to worry about. I was told that all I needed to do was to tear good blankets and bags into pieces and turn them into the salvage officer, and he would replace each part of a blanket or bag with a new one. I asked, “But what if he doesn’t’ want to cooperate? I was told that I surely had some “trading material,” such as extra steaks or coffee from the mess hall, that I could give him.
I didn’t approve of this method of making up my shortages, but I was being tempted. I didn’t have the money to pay for the losses. I might have to leave the service with a debt hanging over my head. It would also reflect on my record of service. I had always tried to be a good steward of the property for which I was responsible. I was troubled and worried.
One evening, after returning home to our little duplex in Augusta, Georgia, I said to my wife, “I’m tired of worrying about the missing property. Let’s let God worry about it!” We went to the bedroom, knelt by the bed, and asked in our desperation for the Lord’s help. We felt better after placing our burden at his feet.
After our prayers, I sat down in the chair near the bookcase, and opened my Bible. It opened at Psalm 1, and I began to read,
“Blessed is the man that walketh not in the counsel of the ungodly, nor standeth in the way of sinners, nor sitteth in the seat of the scornful. But his delight is in the law of the Lord; and in his law doth he meditate day and night. And he shall be like a tree planted by the rivers of water, that bringeth forth his fruit in his season; his leaf also shall not wither; and whatsoever he doeth shall prosper” (Psalm 1:1-3).
The message of Psalm 1 was the help I needed. The Holy Ghost was at work. When I read, “he shall be like a tree,” I could see a strong oak that doesn’t bend easily. The words gave me the strength to refuse the counsel of my fellow officers. I would not make up the shortages in ways that were contrary to the law of the Lord. Now I was ready to face the consequences of the losses. I had overcome the temptation to violate the commandments of God.
A few days later as I arrived at my office, I was met by a smiling supply sergeant, who asked me to come with him to the supply room. He pointed to the highest shelf near the ceiling and said, “Guess what I found in those burlap bales up there?” I didn’t need three guesses. They contained the missing blankets and barracks bags!
I had learned two valuable lessons. 1) God can be trusted to help us with our troubles and afflictions. 2) The Holy Ghost will help us resist the counsel of the ungodly, and will give us the strength to keep his commandments, no matter what the cost may be.
I had been comforted and helped through a difficult situation by the power and presence of the Holy Ghost.
I know that the Holy Ghost stands by to comfort and help in time of need.
My Love to All,
High Pries Francis Harper

Widow's Might - Saturday November 23
This Saturday from 9:00 am to 4:00 pm at the CPRS Gym is the Widow's Might Bazaar and Tea Room. There are 23 vendors selling a variety of crafts and other items. At the Widow's Might area you could purchase crafts, baked goods, homemade biscuits and gravy at breakfast or baked potato soup or chili at lunch. There are homemade freezer rolls for Thanksgiving dinner.
Brother Eric Odida indicates the needs of the widows are particularly great this year. We have several widows who depend on farming for their income and food. There was a drought followed by a flood. Most of these sisters have been wiped out. Even $100 allows them to re-establish themselves in farming. In addition to selling food and other items, we will also take donations for this cause. For the first time, we can take debit or credit cards. Please come and support our sisters in Africa.

Francis Harper Message for 11/15/2019
Faith
On several occasions Jesus said to his disciples: “O ye of little faith.” Would he say the same to us? “. . . without faith it is impossible to please him; for he that cometh to God must believe that he is, and that he is a rewarder of them that diligently seek him” (Hebrews 11:6).
Abraham was noted as a man of great faith. “By faith, Abraham, when he was called to go out into a place which he should after receive for an inheritance, obeyed; not knowing whither he went” (Hebrews 11:8). He was seventy-five when he left his comfortable home at Haran and did not know where he was going! His friends and neighbors must have thought he had lost his mind. Noah must have been the laughing-stock of his community until it started to rain. And the court of Pharaoh must have wondered about Moses giving up all of the treasures and pleasures of Egypt for a life in the wilderness. But these men of faith had heard the call of our invisible God. It is true that “the natural man receiveth not the things of the Spirit of God; for they are foolishness unto him; neither can he know them, because they are spiritually discerned” (1 Corinthians 2:14).
Paul wrote: “Now faith is the assurance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen” (Hebrews 11:1). Faith gives us hope and purpose. Wherefore, whoso believeth in God, might with surety hope for a better world, yea, even a place at the right hand of God, which hope cometh of faith, maketh an anchor to the souls of men, which would make them sure and steadfast, always abounding in good works, being led to glorify God” (Ether 5:4).
Faith is the key to God’s power. “Now Peter and John went up together into the temple at the ninth hour [3 PM.] for prayer. And a man lame from his mother’s womb was carried, whom they laid daily at the gate of the temple . . . to ask alms . . . And Peter and John fastening their eyes upon him, said, look on us. And he gave heed unto them, expecting to receive something of them. Then Peter said, silver and gold have I none; but such as I have give I thee.” (Acts 3:1-6). Peter had great faith in God’s power as he said; “In the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth rise up and walk . . . and immediately his feet and ankle bones received strength . . . And he stood, and entered with them into the temple, walking, and leaping, and praising God. And all the people saw him . . . And Peter said . . . ye men of Israel, why marvel ye at this? Or why look ye so earnestly on us, as though by our own power or holiness we had made this man to walk? (Acts 3:6-12). Faith had unleashed the power of God.
People without faith are like a ship without a rudder. Without faith in God, their thinking often becomes irrational. They become susceptible to strong delusions. Professing themselves to be wise, they become fools (Romans 1:22). “Because they received not the love of the truth . . . God shall send them strong delusion” (2 Thessalonians 2:10-11). They lose their right mind and believe lies and the “father of lies” (John 8:44).
Without faith in God and his guidance we will soon drift off course. The Lord prepared a compass for the Nephites to show them “the course which they should travel in the wilderness; and it did work for them according to their faith in God” (Alma 17:73). They called this compass the Liahona. When they were slothful, and forgot to exercise their faith in God they did not progress in their journey. “And now I say, . . . just as surely as this director [Liahona] did bring our fathers, by following its course, to the promised land, shall the words of Christ, if we follow their course, carry us beyond this vale of sorrow, into a far better land of promise” (Alma 17:80). Faith in the words of Jesus is our compass. As he said: “I am the way, the truth and the life; no man cometh to the Father, but by me” (John 4:16).
++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
Dear Ones,
Abraham was a man of great faith, “Who against hope believed in hope, that he might become the father of many nations, according to that which was spoken, So shall thy seed be. And being not weak in faith, he considered not his own body now dead, when he was about a hundred years old, neither yet the deadness of Sarah’s womb; He staggered not at the promise of God through unbelief; but was strong in faith, giving glory to God; And being fully persuaded, that what he had promised, he was able also to perform. And therefore it was imputed to him for righteousness” (Romans 4:18-22). Paul was quite likely referring to Genesis 15:6 KJV; 15:12 IV, which says, “And he [Abram-Abraham] believed in the Lord; and the Lord counted it unto him for righteousness?
What is the depth of our faith? Will a superficial faith be counted as righteousness? I think not. The level of our faith will determine the measure of our righteousness.
Mormon, the father of Moroni, spoke of the importance of faith: “Behold, my beloved brethren, . . . I judge that ye have faith in Christ because of your meekness; if ye have not faith in him, then ye are not fit to be numbered among the people of his church . . . if a man have faith, he must have hope; for without faith there cannot be any hope. And again, behold I say unto you, that he cannot have faith and hope, save [unless] he shall be meek and lowly of heart; . . . for none is acceptable before God, save [except] the meek and lowly of heart” (Moroni 7:45-49). Faith is a gift of God, reserved for the meek and lowly.
Mormon asked: “Has the day of miracles ceased? Have angels ceased to appear to the children of men? . . . it is by faith that miracles are wrought; and it is by faith that angels appear and minister unto men; wherefore if these things have ceased, woe be unto the children of men for it is because of unbelief . . . if these things have ceased, then has faith ceased also; and awful is the state of man” (Moroni 7:37-43).
Certainly miracles have not ceased, nor have angels ceased to appear, but these blessings are not as common as we would like them to be. Nor are they occurring as often as they should, or could be, if we had greater faith.
How can a greater level of faith be attained? Faith is a gift of the Holy Spirit. See 1 Corinthians 12:9. Paul counseled: “covet earnestly the best gifts” (1 Corinthians 12:31). We need to pray that our faith will be increased.
In Hebrews 11, “the faith chapter,” an interesting statement is made: “God having provided some better things for them through their sufferings, for without sufferings they could not be made perfect” (Hebrews 11:40). None that I know prefer trials over prosperity, but times of adversity often result in spiritual blessings. Trials put us on our knees and we pray fervently! These prayers are often answered, giving us strong evidences of God’s love and power. Our faith is increased by these experiences.
On one of my trips to Nepal I got lost in the Hong Kong airport. My departure time was near and I was having difficulty in finding the gate for my departing flight. I had asked for help at an information desk but I could not understand the Chinese English! In my desperation, I asked God to help me! As I looked down the concourse I saw a man approaching. I said to him, you look like a person who can help me. He smiled, and in the most beautiful Mid-Western English, he assured me he could direct me to my gate. I wondered later if he was an angel? I didn’t ask his name or address. The Lord answered my prayer by sending an angel to help me. If he was not from heaven; he was at least an “earth angel.” I arrived at my gate in what I call “the precise timing of the Lord.” All of my fellow passengers were already on the plane. My faith was increased. Trials beget faith. Faith begets more faith.

In Memory of Sibyl Reynolds
February 23, 1942 – November 11, 2019
Sibyl J. Reynolds is now encircled in the arms of God's love. She passed from this life to Eternal Life comforted by family, at home, on November 11th, 2019, at 11:45 AM.
Sibyl was born in McKenzie, Tennessee. She was a loving wife to her husband of fifty-nine years, a wonderful mother to her three children, and a friend to countless people with whom she interacted throughout her life. She was a teacher’s aide to emotionally handicapped children, with whom she kept in contact long after her job as a teacher concluded. She also worked as a parole officer and volunteered at a Crisis Counseling Center. For most of her life, she was a homemaker, wife, and mother. Her greatest joy was being a member of the church and sharing the gospel of Jesus Christ.
Sibyl is survived by her husband Chester, her son Eric and wife Dana and their two children (William and Vanessa), her daughter Robin and husband James and their three children (Jacob, Jeremy, and Emma), her daughter Suzanne, and her sister Mary and husband Alden and their daughter (Esther). She was preceded in death by her parents Kathryn and John Ples.

Francis Harper Message for 11/8/2019
Endurance
The popularity of Jesus with the multitude continued until the supply of loaves and fish was exhausted. “From that time many of his disciples went back, and walked no more with him. Then said Jesus unto the twelve, will ye also go away? Then Simon Peter answered him, Lord, to whom shall we go? Thou hast the words of eternal life. And we believe and are sure that thou art that Christ, the Son of the living God” (John 6:66-69).
The Lord’s question, “Will ye also go away?” is still appropriate for each of us to consider and answer today. There are many in our nation, and even in our church, who accepted Jesus, were baptized and promised to follow him all the days of their lives, who no longer walk with him! According to a survey conducted in 2018-2019, 65% of Americans now consider themselves Christians. This is down 12 percentage points within the last decade. Jesus, speaking of the time of his second coming, prophesied: “And then shall many be offended, . . . And because iniquity shall abound, the love many shall wax cold; but he that shall endure unto the end, the same shall be saved” (Mark 13:12-13).
We need to remember the song we occasionally sing: “I have decided to follow Jesus, No turning back, No turning back. Tho’ none go with me, still I will follow, No turning back, No turning back. The world behind me, the cross before me, No turning back, No turning back.” I recall the Nepalese saints singing this at their baptismal services. Becoming a faithful Christian is always costly, but this is especially true in countries where Christians often face persecution, imprisonment and even death.
Jesus taught: “Wherefore, settle this in your hearts, that ye will do the things which I shall teach, and command you. For which of you intending to build a tower, sitteth not down first, and counteth the cost, whether he have the money to finish his work. . . signifying there should not any man follow him, unless he was able to continue . . .” (Luke 14:28-31).
Jesus also said: “. . . no man having put his hand to the plough, and looking back, is fit for the kingdom of God” (Luke 9:62). Paul mentions a fellow servant, Demas, being with him in the ministry. Later, in his letter to Timothy he writes: “. . . Demas hath forsaken me, having loved this present world” (2 Timothy 4:10). This is the sad commentary that could be written for many who have good intentions to follow Jesus who do not finish well. Paul could truthfully say: “I have fought a good fight, I have finished my course, I have kept the faith” (2 Timothy 4:7).
There’s always opposition. As it is written: And to bring about God’s “eternal purposes in the end of man . . . it must needs be that there was an opposition; even the forbidden fruit in opposition to the tree of life” (2 Nephi 1:97-100).
Our most formidable foes are Satan and ourselves. The natural man is an enemy to God and to ourselves. God will help us if we ask: “Let thy goodness like a fetter bind my wand’ring heart to thee. Prone to wander, Lord, I feel it. Prone to leave the God I love. Here’s my heart, O take and seal it. Seal it for thy courts above” (Hymns of the Restoration #10).
The words of Peter have been tested and proven to be true: “God knoweth how to deliver the godly out of temptation...” (2 Peter 2:9). If we rely on him, he will help us “endure unto the end.” And we shall be saved! (Mark 13:13).
++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
Dear Ones,
I promised the Lord I would write a message each week if he would give me a subject and assist me with the writing. In the early hours of October 27, I was awakened by a quiet whisper of the Holy Spirit. I was given a one word message. The word was endurance.
As I pondered upon the word endurance I thought of the many saints through the ages who have endured. Paul listed many of these: Abel, Enoch, Noah, Abraham, Sarah, Joseph, Moses, Rahab, Gideon, David, Samuel and the prophets. See Hebrews 11.
Paul could have named many others who have suffered great hardships for the cause of the kingdom. He was not aware of Lehi, Nephi, Abinadi, Alma, Samuel and others who suffered great trials to bring forth the kingdom in the western hemisphere. Finally Paul reminds us of Jesus: “Looking unto Jesus the author and finisher of our faith: who for the joy that was set before him endured the cross, despising the shame, and is set down at the right hand of the throne of God . . . consider him that endured . . . ye have not yet resisted unto blood, striving against sin . . . wherefore lift up the hands which hang down, and strengthen the feeble knees” (Hebrews 12:2, 4, 12).
In our review of those who have willingly suffered and endured in supporting truth and righteousness we must mention Joseph and Emma Smith and their associates. Joseph was mocked and persecuted from the beginning of his ministry. He was beaten, tarred and feathered, imprisoned and was finally killed. Through all their trials, Joseph and his wife Emma, never wavered in upholding their testimony of truth.
What must we endure and overcome today? Most of us, especially in America, are not being threatened physically. The threats we face in the USA are primarily in the spiritual realm. “For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places” (Ephesians 6:12). We have heard the words such as the “deep state” and the “swamp” being used to describe the corruption within our government. This corruption is undoubtedly due to the decline of the spiritual values of those who govern and in those who elected them.
The pollsters report the following percentages of American (USA) adults who approve of the following listed behaviors: Gambling 61%, Adultery 42%, Fornication 60%, Abortion 45%, pornography 38%, profanity 38%, drunkenness 35% and homosexuality 30%. Christianity appears to be losing ground in our nation.
At one point in my life I prayed: “Lord, is your kingdom only a utopian dream? Shortly after I offered this prayer I was awakened in the night with these words being repeated again and again: “In this world we have no continuing city.” I was not acquainted with any scripture expressing this thought. I searched for the word in my Bible Concordance using the word “continuing.” The scripture being repeated to me is found in Hebrews 13:14: “For here [in this world] have we no continuing city, but we seek one to come [an eternal, everlasting city]. This experience was blessed assurance that God’s kingdom will come, even as Jesus taught us to pray: “Thy Kingdom come, thy will be done on earth, as it is done in heaven” (Matthew 6:11 IV; 6:10 KJV). Would Jesus teach us to pray for God’s kingdom to come, if it will never come? I think not.
We look forward with great anticipation to the day when “the Lord himself will descend from heaven with a shout . . .” (1 Thessalonians 4:16-17). “For behold, he cometh in the clouds with ten thousands of his saints” (Revelation 1:7). Enoch and his city of Holiness will be among them, “Then they [saints] who are alive, shall be caught up together into the clouds . . . to meet the Lord in the air; and so shall we be ever with the Lord” (1 Thessalonians 4:17).
“And blessed are they who shall seek to bring forth my Zion at that day, for they shall have the gift and the power of the Holy Ghost. And if they endure unto the end, they shall be lifted up at the last day, and shall be saved in the everlasting kingdom of the Lamb” (1 Nephi 3:187-188).

From Nancy Eppert:
It is time to start gathering the choir of angels.
I need firm commitments for the Living Windows event on the Independence Square by November 29. Men and women ages 16 and above would be best. The event starts at 6:00 p.m. and goes to 9:00 p.m. We will have one rehearsal at 5pm just prior to the event. All those who participate will be robed, so I need sizes ahead of time. We can accommodate small to extra fluffy sizes.
Interested persons can contact me via email. On the rare occasion that they don't have email, they can call. I don't answer to an unknown number, so please leave a message.
Thank you for singing to the Lord...He approves even making "a joyful noise"!
If you have a good choir voice, please pray about participating in this event. It will give the IIAW much needed visibility in the community.
