Update - Joey Edson

--------- Forwarded message ----------
From: Ron Hofsommer

Update - Joey Edson

Chris Edson 3:18pm Jan 29

Dear All,

Joey went to Nuclear Medicine early this morning, was injected with dye, and it was determined which lymph nodes the tumor drained to. He was then taken to surgery and had more tissue removed at the site and also lymph nodes taken to be biopsied. The incision is about 10 inches across his left shoulder blade and the skin had to be pulled very tight, so he isn’t supposed to really use that arm for a few days. The surgeon said things went well, and he will call us when he gets results on the biopsy of lymph nodes. Joey is off work until Monday and not supposed to drive. They gave him some high powered pain pills and told him to rest. (We’ll see how that goes.)

One thing the surgeon emphasized to me is the seriousness of this tumor. We are not out of the woods yet by any means. He is very concerned that he will have to go back for the rest of the nodes. Whether he does or not, he will be referred to an oncologist to determine further treatment.

Prayers are appreciated and we have felt them all! Thank you very much!

If you would like to start working on some of these anthems ahead of time, I'd suggest focusing on "He Arose" which we'll be working on during the first rehearsal.

As always, we would ask you to invite other musicians to share in this ministry.

Rehearsals are Sunday afternoons from 4:30 - 6:00 pm at the Atherton Restoration Branch beginning this Sunday, January 19.

These worship services are planned for Sunday, April 13 and Sunday, April 20.

Please let us know as soon as possible if you will be singing with us this spring and if you would like a rehearsal CD.

Yours in Christ,

Larry Ward

Eric Odida - Update

Beloved brother,

I'm still down a little.

Last week the doctor drew fluids from my spine (close by the hip) to test for meningitis. The right side of my head was paining besides the fact that he had done all he could to clear the bacteria from my body, but white blood cells count continued to rise indicating a problem. Thanks to The Lord the tests were negative, BUT I have pain on my neck from the base to the lower part of the rear part of my head. I have to be on pain killers or stand the pain. A part from that I am doing pretty good.

Love in Christ to you all.

Essential Oils 101 Class

Essential Oils 101 Class

Dear Friends,

I have been talking about essential oils, and the importance of them in our lives for preventative measures, healing and cooking for approximately 18 years. Specifically the Young Living essential oils because of the integrity of the company, and the quality of these pure, therapeutic grade oils.

I sense some of you would like to try essential oils, however it is hard to know where to begin, and which ones to use.

For this reason my daughter and I are putting together an Essential Oils 101 class. This will be held Tuesday, January 14, 2014 at 7 p.m.

Do NOT worry, this is NOT a party - no order forms, no party games, no hostess or hostess credits (if you know what I mean).....etc

This is an informative class, no cost to attend

You will learn what oils can be used for various ailments and how to use the essential oils to replace items currently in your medicine cabinet, and to keep you out of the doctors office. It is amazing how the earth God created has everything we need to sustain life, and to keep life.

I have spoken about the Thieves formula for years, however there are many more very powerful formulas and singles everyone should have, and many for specific issues you or your loved ones may be experiencing.

This class will teach on how these oils work.

My daughter, Camille, really got into them as she saw how fast they worked on their new adopted son, Caden and the issues he was born with. It was wonderful to experience him going from crying in pain to instantly cooing with the relief that was given to him with the anointing of these oils on his little body.

Come and learn how these oils can change your life. You will want to have them in store in your own homes.

We really need to have you respond as to whether you are coming as we are holding it in my parlor area right in The Mansion House at 2121 So Sterling Avenue, Independence, MO 64052. Therefore, there will be limited seating, and if we have too many coming we will know to schedule another time for those who still want to come and learn.

We will have a nice fire going to make it nice and cozy for you, and I will be serving tea.

Hope you can make it - I have not seen some of you for awhile now.

Stay warm,

Paula Swayne

From: Vicki Ferdig

Prayer Request

Dear Saints... in light of the recent miracle we all shared in Brother Erica Odida's health improvement, we are keenly aware of how important it is that the Saints unite in prayer for those in need. We have one in dire need from our branch.

Her name is Melinda Riedel and she is a young single mother that has a terrible skin disease that causes sores similar to boils that just do not heal. She has been to Mayo Clinic twice, and other highly respected hospitals and was recently at KU, where she was told there was nothing they could do for her. Doctors have been unable to give her any relief. Her pain is so severe that she is unable to even hold her little baby girl and it is just tearing her up.

Our branch, Washington Restoration Branch in Excelsior Springs is holding a special prayer service for her this Wednesday at 7:00 P.M. We would invite other branches to remember her at their services also. You are certainly welcome to come to our branch to pray with us. Let us unite our hearts in prayer for this young mother.

Thank you so much!

HAPPY NEW YEAR!! from Paul Gage

---------- Forwarded message ----------
From: paul gage

Greetings Dear Saints around the world,

Just when we thought 2013 would never end, it's done today.

And so we enter another "new year." What will it hold for each of us as a person, our families, our branches or groups, our nations? Only God knows.

Therefore, let us put our whole trust in Him. He already knows everything that is going to happen to each of us this year. Our faith in His power, love, and guidance, is what will sustain us in 2014. Will 2014 hold some mystical phenomena? Some terrible tragedies? Loss of loved ones, loss of things we think are important in life?

Rather than concentrating or worrying about potential losses, let us us rejoice each day that the Lord gives us to live for Him and for His coming Kingdom.

Some will say, of 2013, "good riddance"13 is considered by some as an "unlucky" number.

Well, what about 2014? Books on numerology say that seven is the number of spiritual perfection and since 14 is comprised of 2x7 then 2014 could be a year of double spiritual perfection. See Matthew 1:5 for just one example of the use of the number 14. Just something to consider. No, I am not making any predictions, but rather preparations for the return of our Lord Jesus Christ, whether in 2014 or some other time, it is in His hands.

We all have to do what we can while we can. As James 4:14 says "Whereas ye know not what shall be on the morrow. For what is your life? It is even a vapor, that appeareth for a little time, and then vanisheth away."

I will share the words of a song I ran across some years ago which is very fitting for today and all our tomorrows.

I would like to say I wrote it but the credit goes to Larry A. Hamblen and was copyrightred in 1998. You might find more info on it at

1. Lest we forget our Savior's love,
and the blessings He bestows;
We bow in thankfulness to Him,
And exalt Him as our Lord.
Exalt Him as our Lord, dear friends,
Exalt Him as our Lord;
We bow in thankfulness to Him,
And exalt Him as our Lord.

2. As we look back across the years,
Our mem'ries are so dear;
In gain or loss we bear our cross,
Our joys are mixed with tears.
Our joys are mixed with tears, dear friends,
Our joys are mixed with tears;
In gain or loss we bear our cross,
Our joys are mixed with tears.

3. This night is given added light,
To bear life's trials again;
We face the days of this new year
With Jesus as our King!
With Jesus as our King, dear friends,
With Jesus as our King!
We'll face the days of this new year with Jesus as our King!

Richard Price Obituary

--------- Forwarded message ----------
From: David Price

Richard Price Obituary

Richard David Price, 89, passed from this life January 1, 2014, at his home in Independence, Missouri, surrounded by loved ones.

Richard was born February 28, 1924, in Boise, Idaho, to Chauncey Atlee Price and Arlie Luella (Abercrombie) Price. At age twelve he was baptized into the Reorganized Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints (RLDS) at Hagerman, Idaho, where his family then lived.

He graduated from Hagerman High School, and studied at the Church’s Graceland College in Lamoni, Iowa for two years where he received an Associates of Arts Degree. Richard’s studies then took him to Central Missouri State College, Warrensburg, Missouri, where he earned Bachelor Degrees in Education in l948, and in Political Science in 1950. He married Pamela Kirksey Davis on July 6, 1948, and they enjoyed over sixty-five years of marriage.

Richard taught high school for a year in Idaho, and a year in Washington. In 1950 the family moved to Independence, Missouri, after which he worked as a Quality Inspector for the Atomic Energy Division of the Bendix Corporation in Kansas City where he was employed for thirty-four years until retiring in 1985.

Through the years, Richard found time to volunteer to serve the RLDS Church in many capacities--first as a Priest, and later as an Elder. He helped build two church buildings, serving as Pastor at one, and at the other as Preacher, Missionary Coordinator, Sunday School teacher, Boy Scout and Youth leader and Home-Visitation Minister. He also served as History Site Photographer and Tour Coordinator, Conference Host and Delegate, and as a Guide at the RLDS Auditorium. As a minister he performed dozens of baptisms and wedding ceremonies, and also served as a Chaplain in the United States Air Force Auxiliary--Civil Air Patrol--where he held the officer rank of Captain. He was a member of the Glendale Restoration Branch in Independence, where he served as an Elder.

Richard helped found Restoration Voice Christian magazine in 1978, serving as an editor until 2001. In 1984 he expanded his ministerial efforts by founding Price Publishing Company and the Restoration Bookstore in Independence, Missouri. And in 1989 he continued in Gospel outreach by founding Vision magazine. While so engaged, Mr. Price authored five books and scores of religious articles and pamphlets; one of which resulted in the planting of hundreds of new church branches worldwide that promote the original RLDS Church message.

Richard was preceded in death by his parents, his sister Donna Lou Price Vaughn, and brothers Max Erwin Price and Norman Earl Player. He is survived by his wife, Pamela, of the home; his children: Amelia Fay Price Villers and husband, James Ronald of Lee's Summit, Missouri; Lila Rae Price Costa, and husband, Albert Costa, Jr., of Forney, Texas; and David Mark Price and wife, Charlene (Charney) of Newton, Kansas. He also leaves six grandchildren: David Villers and wife, Sarah, of West Plaines, Missouri; Matthew Price and wife, Joanna of Wichita, Kansas; Dustin Price of Wichita, Kansas; Victoria Price of Wichita, Kansas; Norman Kaleimamahu and wife Ashley of Forney, Texas; and Keenan Costa of Forney Texas. Richard is also survived by four great-grandchildren: Kayson Kaleimamahu, Alivia Kaleimamahu, Kaydence Pentland, and Minnie Marie Villers. He also leaves many other relatives and friends.

The family wishes to extend a special thanks to the Caregivers from Crossroads Hospice of Kansas City. The family will greet friends Friday, January 10, from 6 to 8 PM at Speaks Suburban Chapel at 18020 E 39th Street in Independence. The funeral will be at the same location on Saturday, January 11 at 10 AM. Burial will immediately follow at Mound Grove Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Price Publishing Company, 915 E 23rd St, Independence, MO 64055.

Response from Jay Havener to the document "Signs of the Times"

Response from Jay Havener to the document "Holiday Wishes ~ Signs of the Times" by Yvonne Galusha

Brother Garland,

This document bothers me a great deal. I believe that there is a movement within the Restored Church that believes that we should be observing the Feast Days of Israel. I believe that our Sister is supporting this view in her study. I also believe that she is mis-representing facts to support some of her views. For example, she states that Jews who were driven out of Spain gave Christopher Columbus a fellow Jew, of their wealth to find an new land for them. This is so much in error that it casts for me a shadow over the entire premise of the document. Christopher Columbus was Italian and a very devout Catholic. Through out his entire voyage to the New World, he and the entire crew observed the Catholic vespers every day; in fact every half-hour as they turned over the hour glass they used to track time, they recited Catholic prayers.

The other thing that bothers me about this piece is that fact that our Sister does not reference the Book of Mormon or the D&C. The fact that every prophet the Restored Church has had, has not promoted any significance to the Jewish Calendar nor their feast days and have not held the Restoration to those practices tell me that while they may be of interest, the Lord has not placed them as necessary to the Restoration. Should we be concerned for the last days? YES. But I believe that our concern is not for any signs of the times, but rather for the Spiritual conditioning of the Saints. Zion will not be brought into being by the showing of a Blood Moon. We have been told over and over, that Zion is no nearer nor further away than the spiritual condition of the Saints justifies. That tells me that that cause of Zion is driven by our willingness to respond to the Holy Spirit more so than the signs of the times.

CofC - December Herald - Living Out Mission...

If my people which are called by my name, shall humble themselves,

and pray, and seek my face, and turn from their wicked ways; then

will I hear from heaven, and will forgive their sin, and will heal their

land. (II Chronicles 7:14)

As we embark upon another important election year in these perilous End Times,

surely all professing Christians must resolve to actively participate in the political arena,

however uninviting it may get, and prepare to cast well-informed votes. Given the

confusing upside-down state of affairs in our beloved country today and the rhetoric

coming out of the mouths of many religious leaders – what the prophet Isaiah referred

to as calling “evil good, and good evil,” putting “darkness for light and light for

darkness…” (5:20) – the informed involvement of Christians seems our only hope.

Before entering the voting booth, how crucial it is that we each investigate our

candidates’ real positions and previous legislative actions and other responses to the

critical issues of the day – that we weigh their deeds more than their “many words” –

and then issue warning voices to our fellow citizens. If the Holy Scriptures are to be

believed, it is our God-ordained duty to so act:

And again, verily I say unto you, Those who desire in their hearts, in meekness, to

warn sinners to repentance, let them be ordained unto this power; for this is a day

of warning, and not a day of many words. (DC63:15a)

And he was a man of many words, and did speak much flattery to the people:

therefore he led many of the people to do after the manner of his iniquities.

(Mosiah 11:160)

Son of man, I have made thee a watchman unto the house of Israel; therefore hear

the word at my mouth, and give them warning from me. When I say unto the

wicked, Thou shalt surely die; and thou givest him not warning, nor speakest to

warn the wicked from his wicked way, to save his life; the same wicked man shall

die in his iniquity; but his blood will I require at thine hand. Yet if thou warn the

wicked, and he turn not from his wickedness, nor from his wicked way, he shall

die in his iniquity; but thou hast delivered thy soul. (Ezekiel 3:17-19; see also

Ezekiel 33)

Behold, I sent you out to testify and warn the people, and it becometh every man

who hath been warned, to warn his neighbor; therefore, they are left without

excuse, and their sins are upon their own heads.” (DC 25:22a)

And let your preaching be the warning voice, every man to his neighbor, in

mildness and in meekness. (DC 38:9d)

Recently, when reading a December Community of Christ Herald article (Vol. 160

–2013 – copy attached), I was reminded of just why it’s so important to look beyond

public personae and dig deeply into the candidates’ true stances on all major issues –

not just on the “feel good” ones – and make voting decisions based on revealed truth

rather than on the candidates’ and their handlers’ “many words” and “much flattery.”

The Herald article was entitled “Living Out Mission in an Unlikely Venue” and was

written by John S. Wight, senior president of seventy. The piece featured the work of

Iowa state representative Scott Ourth (Democrat – District 26).

Praising Rep. Ourth’s legislative efforts to apply the C of C’s Mission Initiatives

( and Enduring Principles

( in such areas as mental

health redesign, child abuse, domestic violence, poverty, and Medicaid expansion ((the

rep’s “different outlook” in “an environment often identified as little more than cutthroat

partisan politics”), Seventy Wight quotes the following from the congressman:

“I have a bully pulpit for bringing this stuff (Enduring Principles and

Mission Initiatives) into a very secular place,” he said. “I ask myself if a

particular measure can help bring peace, rather than if it simply will further

the party’s position.”

This declaration by Rep. Ourth, the fact that Rep. Ourth is up for re-election in

2014, and the divine enjoinments of the above-referenced Scriptures, led me to

investigate further Rep. Ourth’s stand on all of the critical issues now before us. I began

by checking out Rep. Ourth’s campaign web site ( but could

not readily locate clear policy statements on the majority of social and economic issues,

despite my pushing the ISSUES button on the site. I then contacted the Iowa

Democratic Party, hoping, as is often the case, that party leaders could provide the

official positions of their candidates, but was advised by Kevin Geiken, field director of

the Iowa Democratic Party( to review Representative Ourth's

Legislative record at the Iowa Legislative

To extract official policies from the recommended site would have required going

through hundreds of pages of various bills (a worthwhile endeavor, but something I had

not the time for at that particular juncture), so I opted for Mr. Geiken’s second

suggestion to reach out to Rep. Ourth directly on specific questions and issues. I

requested the congressman’s simple policy statements and convictions on the current

top social and economic issues. My initial emails to Rep.Ourth yielded little information,

though in the end I was provided with his position on several important legislative

matters. Because of Rep. Ourth’s initial reluctance to provide the requested

disclosures, before emailing him further, I searched the web site, PROJECT VOTE

SMART, a non-partisan, non-profit organization facilitating informed voting by providing

the electorate with “access to abundant, accurate, and relevant information.” (See:

ABOUT PROJECT VOTE SMART - (Know that the Project

does not accept funding from corporations, PACs or any organizations that support or

oppose candidates or issues.)

Each election year, Project Vote Smart invites candidates to take part in its

Political Courage Test. This test measures each candidate’s willingness to provide

citizens with their positions on key issues. With regard to the candidates’ decision to

participate or not participate in this Political Courage Test, Project Vote Smart points

“Most candidates, fearing their opponents might use their positions in

attack ads, refuse or only respond to a few questions that their consultants

stamp as safe. Each candidate is repeatedly confronted with these issue

questions by Vote Smart, national media and political leaders of both

major parties.”

Apparently, Rep. Ourth was among those who chose non-participation in the 2012

Political Courage Test, as the Vote Smart web site reveals the following:

“Scott Ourth refused to tell citizens where he stands on any of the issues

addressed in the 2012 Political Courage Test, despite repeated requests

from Vote Smart, national media, and prominent political leaders.”

As mentioned earlier, Rep. Ourth did eventually provide me with his personally-
held positions on a number of issues via a December, 2013 email. The

representatives’ political positions extracted from that email read as follows:

I am a strong proponent of equal rights, civil rights, and human rights. I

am in favor of gay and lesbian people being allowed to marry and to enjoy

all the legal benefits of marriage. I cannot countenance any form of

discrimination. I am pleased the North American Community of Christ

sees it that way, too.

I am a defender of a woman's right to choose, and also to be treated as

equal to men in the workplace (and everywhere else for that matter.)

I am for stringent background checks with regard to firearm sales, but

believe that law-abiding citizens should enjoy the full scope of the second

The Affordable Care Act has a long way to go, and must be worked and

perfected. There were major problems with Medicare and Medicaid when

they first came in to being, but I'm sure glad we stuck with those

programs. I'd hate to think of American life without them. The larger issue

for me is that we find our way to a place where every American can

access appropriate, affordable health care.

I am against anyone entering this country illegally. I understand why

people want to come to America. There is a right way to do that, a legal

way. I am all good with America establishing legal immigration methods

and people accessing a legal path to citizenship.

We are currently working on a huge education reform measure in the Iowa

General Assembly. I am a strong proponent of early childhood education,

affordable college tuition, and paying excellent teachers a very good

wage. We must return to an emphasis on reading, analytical skills, math,

science. Studies also reveal the importance of music and the arts as

catalysts for brain development and improved learning skills.

Herald writer John Wight concludes his article thusly:

Perhaps Doctrine and Covenants 164:9c sums up Ourth’s thoughts about

how each of us is called to live out the Mission Initiatives:

This covenant entails sacramental living that respects and

reveals God’s presence and reconciling activity in creation. It

requires whole-life stewardship dedicated to expanding the

church’s restoring ministries, especially those devoted to

asserting the worth of persons, protecting the sacredness of

creation, and relieving physical and spiritual suffering.

(Emphasis, mine)

I would suggest “reading between the lines” (or perhaps reading through the

hundreds of pages of pertinent proposed/enacted legislation) of some of Rep. Ourth’s

stated positions on gun control, illegal immigration, and the Affordable Care Act. But on

such social [moral] issues as abortion and gay marriage, he has made his positions

perfectly clear. Many caring individuals, including members of the medical profession,

conclude that abortion is the ultimate child abuse. Rep. Ourth and those who stand

behind his representation claim he is working to prevent child abuse, but the fact is that

Rep. Ourth supports abortion on demand, countenancing it as a woman’s “right to

choose.” The unborn female and male children have no such rights to choose; in this

case, whether to live or die. The “worth of persons” mantra to which ministers are to be

“devoted to asserting,” per D&C 164, would seem not to include the worth of unborn

persons – incontestably the most innocent and vulnerable of all human beings. The

Mission Initiatives covenant is apparently not intended to address and to help relieve the

physical and spiritual suffering documented to be caused by abortion to both the unborn

baby and the mother (sometimes called the “walking wounded of the war on the

unborn”). See Physicians for Life documentation at:

Nor does Rep. Ourth’s statement about using his bully pulpit for bringing this

“stuff” into a secular place by asking himself “if a particular measure can help bring

peace, rather than if it simply will further the party’s position,” ring accurate. It appears

Rep. Ourth’s positions, particularly on such matters as unfettered abortion and

acceptance of the homosexual lifestyle clearly advance the Democratic party line in all

50 states; and, for that matter, advance the policies of the administrative “new

positionists” in the C of C. See the Democratic Party national platform: and the C of C’s official [2005]

Church Administrator’s Handbook

and, importantly, recent policy changes outlined on the C of C web site’s official Church

Policy page (

Surely, none of us really needs to be reminded that ELECTIONS – local, state,

and national – HAVE CONSEQUENCES, serious, far-reaching consequences.

Knowing this, may we resolve always to VOTE THE SCRIPTURES – not personal

opinions, not “feelings,” not outward “likeability” of candidates, and not the “many words”

and “much flattery” that is spread abroad. We cannot go wrong voting the Scriptures.

The Scriptures, after all, are not open to personal interpretation (II Peter 1:20 IV, KJV);

they contain the unequivocal teachings and laws of the ultimate Election Judge. That

Judge and His Rules DO NOT CHANGE. “Neither doth he vary from that which he

hath said, neither hath he a shadow of turning from the right to the left, nor from

that which is right to that which is wrong…” (Alma 5:35) (See also: James 1:17;

Jeremiah 6:16; Alma 5:17; Mormon 4:82; Ecclesiastes 3:14; DC 21-2; Malachi 3:6;

Psalm 89:34).
