Francis Harper Message for 12/28/2018

Dear Ones,

A farmer once asked me, “What are you going to do differently next year?” His question challenged me. He was asking what new practices I was going to adopt in my occupation of farming. He could also have been asking what practice I would abandon. This question could be asked of every area of our lives. The relationships we have with our spouse; children; neighbors or our God, may need to be adjusted or changed.

Paul in his letter to the saints at Ephesus wrote of our other vocation: “I. . . , beseech [urge] you that ye walk worthy of the vocation wherewith ye are called” (Ephesians 4:1). All of us are called to be servants of God; priesthood and non-priesthood, members and non-members.

How can we serve God? King Benjamin answers this question: “When ye are in the service of your fellow beings, ye are only in the service of your God” (Mosiah 1:49). Once again, Jesus is our prototype; our example. He has been called the suffering servant based on Isaiah 53. Paul wrote of the fellowship of his sufferings (Philippians 3:10). Are we ready and willing to enter this fellowship?

If we have no apprehending vision of our calling to be like Jesus; a suffering servant, it is highly unlikely that we will even try to attain this status. John wrote “. . . because he laid down his life for us . . . we ought to lay down our lives for the brethren” (1 John 3:16). “. . . we know that, when he shall appear, we shall be like him” (1 John 3:2).

Jesus came to minister. He said, “Whosoever will be great among you, shall be your minister . . . whosoever will be chiefest, shall be the servant of all. For even the Son of man came not to be ministered unto, but to minister, and to give his life a ransom for many” (Mark 10:43-45).

As I returned from work on the evening of December 17, 2018, I found some items on the railing of the ramp leading into our home. The items included: a loaf of banana bread, a Christmas card, a note and a towel. The note read: “Love you both, with hugs, Mary.” We know several Marys. The Mary who came bearing these gifts is still a mystery. I believe this may have been her intention. With the towel, there was a message titled:

The Towel

At first glance, one looks at a hand towel and thinks, “Great, a new towel. I needed a new one.

The old ones look pretty sad.” Have you ever stopped to think that for years; even thousands of years, the towel has not only been used to dry our hands and face and dishes too, but for many other purposes?

Take for example, the mother who wipes the tears of a little child to soothe the physical and/or
emotional hurt; the physician who binds the wound of a bleeding patient; the woman in her home wiping her hands as she moves from task to task; or the weary laborer who wipes the sweat from his brow.

Remember the quiet night in a humble stable many years ago. Mary, filled with wonder, lovingly
wrapped Baby Jesus in swaddling clothes or “towels.”

Perhaps the most significant use of the towel was more than 2000 years ago when a loving Brother
took an ordinary “towel” in His hands and dried the feet of His disciples only hours before His crucifixion.

Yes, the “towel” is a handy item with a multitude of uses, but it also has deep symbolic meaning
when seen in the hands of the Savior doing works of kindness for his fellow man.

Art Katz, a descendant of Judah, has often shared the testimony of his conversion to Christianity. As a young man he had gone to Europe seeking for philosophical answers. He wondered about the meaning of life. He was hitch-hiking across Germany. It was a cold, rainy day and he was stranded along the road. He was shivering and cold when a man stopped to give him a ride. The stranger took him to a restaurant and purchased him a warm meal. During their conversation the man who had befriended him asked; “Do you know what this world needs?” Art responded: “No, what does this world need?” The man who had been so good to him answered: “What this world needs is people who are willing to wash one another's feet.” This was the answer Art had been seeking! Later he wondered, was this stranger who had picked him up at the side of the road, a man, or an angel?

My Love to All, Francis Harper

“And Jesus Increased . . .”

“And Jesus increased in wisdom and stature, and in favor with God and man” (Luke 2:52). As we approach the end of 2018 and the beginning of the new year, accountants will be counting the gains and losses of the past year. Everyone wants to have an increase, especially in the business world.

Jesus expects us to be ever-increasing, especially in spirituality. Proof of this is found in his well-known parable of the talents: “Now I will liken these things unto a parable. For it is like a man traveling into a far country, who called his own servants, and delivered unto them his goods. And unto one he gave five talents, to another two, and to another one; to every man according to his several ability; and straightway went on his journey” (Matthew 25:13-15).

“After a long time the Lord of those servants cometh, and reconeth with them.” The men who had been given the five talents and the two talents reported an increase of 100%! These servants were complimented: “Well done, good and faithful servant(s) thou hast been faithful over a few things, I will make thee ruler over many things; enter thou into the joy of thy Lord” (Matthew 25:19-23).

The one talent man had no increase to report. His Lord called him a “wicked and slothful servant” . . . and said, “Cast ye the unprofitable servant into outer darkness; there shall be weeping and gnashing of teeth” (Mathew 25:26-31). This parable should leave little doubt in our minds about how the Lord expects us to handle the talents he has given us. We will be held accountable. He expects an increase. Are the spiritual gifts we have received bearing fruit? See Galatians 5.

Paul encouraged the saints “. . . to increase and abound in love one to another . . . to walk and to please God, so ye would abound more and more” (1 Thessalonians 3:12, 4:1). To abound means to increase. We need to be ever-increasing in all things; in our faith, our knowledge of God, our love for God and each other. We need to be constantly pressing on to higher ground.
Paul also used the word abounding in his message to the Corinthians: “As ye abound in everything, in faith, and utterance, and knowledge, and in all diligence, and in your love to us, see that ye abound in this grace also” (2 Corinthians 8:7).

Most of us have observed the growth rings on the stump of a tree. Every year another ring is added until the tree dies or is cut. The rings vary in width year to year, measuring the amount of growth. We need to add a little new “wood” each year. We need to keep growing lest we die!

Jesus asked: “What manner of man had ye ought to be? He answered his question by saying, “Verily, I say unto you, even as I am” (3 Nephi 13:5). Jesus is our prototype. When God said “Let us make man in our image, after our likeness,” was he speaking only of our similarity in physical features. Above all, we were created to be like them in spirit and personality.

In an early hour of December 16, 2018, I awakened with this thought: “Let thy life in mine appear.” I wondered about the source of these inspirational words. Were they written in Scripture? I thought perhaps they were the words of a campfire song or hymn. As I meditated I turned to check the time. It was 3:33 A.M. I knew the Lord was reminding me that our daily prayer should be “Let thy life in mine appear.” Later as I opened our hymnal, in an effort to find the source of these inspired words, I discovered it had immediately opened to the precise page of the hymn containing them! (Gracious Spirit Dwell With Me. Hymn 242. Hymns of the Restoration).

Surely the Lord is calling us to become increasingly more like Jesus, day by day, throughout the coming new year.

Cat Needs Loving Home

Seeking a home for our sweet friend, Leo. He is 5 years old, playful, cuddly, and very loud and precious when he purrs.

The only reason we are considering his adoption is he has not done well with our other cat, and would best suited for a home without another cat.

Leo's front paws are declawed, so he would absolutely need to be an indoor pet, but he is low maintenance, he uses the litter box very well, and does not spray.

It is very sad for us to part with our dear friend so we hope to find him a loving and caring place to live.

Francis Harper Message for 12/21/2018

Dear Ones,

We believe in miracles. We believe in the ministry of angels. Moroni asked: “. . . my beloved brethren hath miracles ceased? Behold, I say unto you, Nay; neither have angels ceased to minister unto the children of men . . . for it is by faith, that miracles are wrought; and it is by faith that angels appear and minister unto men” (Moroni 7:29-30, 41).

As we approach the Christmas Season we will be faced with a mixture of truth and fables such as Santa, Rudolph and the elves. Surely Satan loves this confusion. Perhaps it should be noted that the letters spelling Santa also spell Satan. We need to remember the words of Peter: “For we have not followed cunningly devised fables, when we made known unto you the power and coming of our Lord Jesus Christ, but were eye-witnesses of his majesty” (2 Peter 1:16).

We rely heavily upon Luke’s account for the miraculous details of the birth of the Christ child. Luke did not rely upon traditions in his writing of the Lord’s birth. He stated his record was based upon the testimonies of “eye-witnesses and ministers of the word . . . that thou mightest know the certainty of those things wherein thou hast been instructed” (Luke 1:2-4). He assures us from the beginning of his writing that it is a credible, believable account of the things that actually happened at the time of the Lord’s nativity and beyond. We can accept Luke’s record of the visitation of angels and the miracles that transpired thereafter with full confidence and certainty.

It was our privilege to visit Ain Karem in mid January 1990. This is the birth place of John the Baptist; a cousin of Jesus. It was of miracles that happened in this suburb of Jerusalem, that Luke began to relate the chain of miraculous events that accompanied the births of Jesus and his cousin. John’s parents “were both well stricken in years and they had no child” (Luke 1:7). Zacharias had diligently prayed that his wife Elizabeth would give birth to a child, but she “was barren” (Luke 1:7). Then one day while he was serving as a priest at the temple, the angel Gabriel appeared to Zacharias and said: “your prayer is heard, and thy wife Elizabeth shall bear thee a son and thou shalt call his name John” (Luke 1:13). The angel promised Zacharias that his son John “shall go before the Lord in the Spirit and power of Elias” (Luke 1:17).

Good news travels fast. Surely members of Elizabeth’s family who lived in Nazareth had heard of Elizabeth’s pregnancy. And in her “sixth month the angel Gabriel was sent from God unto Nazareth, to a virgin [a cousin] espoused [engaged] to a man named Joseph, and the virgin’s name was Mary” (Luke 1:26-27). Gabriel’s message to Mary was “. . . thou shalt conceive and bring forth a Son, and shall call his name Jesus. He shall be called the Son of the Highest; . . .” Mary responded “. . . be it unto me according to thy word” (Luke 1:31, 38).

Now what would Mary tell Joseph; or her parents? What would they think if she told them she was pregnant? Perhaps her cousin Elizabeth would understand. She went “with haste . . . [70-80 miles] and entered the house of Zacharias” (Luke 1:39-40). Mary’s greeting caused Elizabeth’s unborn son to leap in her womb. Elizabeth was filled with the Holy Spirit and she said to Mary: “Those things told thee by the angel of the Lord shall be fulfilled” (Luke 1:44 IV).

Mary stayed with Elizabeth “about three months [or until the time of John’s birth] and she returned to her own house” (Luke 1:56). Perhaps it was during the absence of Mary that an angel appeared to her espoused husband, Joseph, in a vision and he was told “that which is conceived in her, is of the Holy Ghost” (Matthew 2:3 IV; 1:20 KJV). Surely Joseph was greatly blessed by this knowledge. Now for the rest of the story turn to Luke 2.

Merry Christmas to All,

Francis Harper

+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

“A virgin shall conceive and shall bear a Son . . .”

(Isaiah 7:14)

A few days before Christmas of 1992, I thought of six friends I wanted to add to our Christmas card list. I asked Iris if she had some cards expressing the real message of the season, to which I could add a personal note. I was not satisfied with the cards she had on hand. So I told her I would pick up the ones I needed at the local Hallmark shop. I was surprised when from the hundreds of cards on display, I could not find a single one that satisfied me.

I returned to our store discouraged and frustrated. To my secretary I expounded and exhorted about the atheistic, unbelieving society in which we live. She listened patiently, then searched our files and found a few generic cards, obviously designed not to offend anyone except the believers.

I sat down with a feeling of heaviness in my heart. I had not realized how little the people of this world seem to care about the real message of Christmas. I wanted to shout, “Doesn’t anyone know, or appreciate, how much God loves us, sending his Son that ‘we might have life and have it more abundantly?’ ”

Suddenly the phone rang. It was after five and closing time. It was cousin Tom. He asked if I could stay at the store a little longer. He explained he had found some things he wanted to show me.

I was not certain about the urgency of his request, but I promised to wait. As I waited, I recalled that earlier that day I had tried to discourage him from going to the orchard warehouse to continue cleaning it. I felt the weather was too cold. My words had not discouraged him.

He soon arrived with a box he had found at the warehouse. The box was filled with a few of my father’s keepsakes. Among these things were my father’s eighth grade diploma, some musty old letters, A Big Chief Tablet with minutes of the “Brush Hollow Pig and Chick Club,” a Saint’s Hearld from the year 1897, and six unused Christmas cards, complete with envelopes! I thanked him for bringing the mementos and we both returned to our homes.

The significance of this experience soon began to dawn upon me. Tom had brought me the exact number of cards I wanted, each with the message I had been looking for, complete with envelopes, in perfect condition, preserved in a larger envelope, all in perfect timing. I had no doubt this was the work of God! It was a miracle.

Pictured on the cards was a painting by the seventeenth century artist, Esteban Murillo, entitled The Adoration of the Shepherds. The cards were beautiful, and so appropriate.

I wrote my Christmas messages that day, rejoicing and pondering: Jesus was born of a virgin just as it was prophesied. God, who sent his only Son two thousand years ago is still revealing his love today.

After this testimony was given to me, do you suppose I will ever doubt any of the miraculous details of the nativity of Jesus? “Where is room for doubt? No where!”

Prayer Request for Gary Sanders

My cousin, Gary Sanders, 63 years old, is in the hospital in Joplin, Missouri. We would like to ask for prayers for him in his behalf due to he has been bleeding and the doctors can't seem to find out why. He has been in the hospital multiple times, but all the doctors do is check him out, then release him.

He would also like to be administered to, but we aren't sure who to ask. Does anyone know any Elders near Joplin, MO who would be willing to go to the hospital to administer to him please? Even though he is a Baptist, he has asked my father to administer to him when my father was alive.

The closest priesthood we know of are in Springfield, MO. But, I don't know their phone numbers, or even if they are still living in Springfield.

Thanks
Nancy

Francis Harper Message for 12/14/2018

Dear Ones,

None of us like to read or hear bad news, but neither should be like the mythical ostrich that hides his head in the sand. We need to watch lest we be swept away with the tide and lost. We are called to be among “the watchers and the holy ones to the intent that the living may know . . .” (Daniel 4:17).

The priesthood are called to be watchmen, even as Jacob who was called by his brother Nephi. “Wherefore, we labored diligently among our people, that we might persuade them to come unto Christ, and partake of the goodness of God . . . For I, Jacob, and my brother Joseph, had been consecrated priests, and teachers of this people by the hand of Nephi. And we did magnify our office unto the Lord, taking upon us the responsibility, answering the sins of the people upon our own heads, if we did not teach them the word of God with all diligence” (Jacob 1:7, 18-19). “So thou, o son of man, I have set thee a watchman unto the house of Israel; therefore thou shalt hear the word at my mouth, and warn them from me” (Ezekiel 33:7).

The people of our nation need to be awakened to their perilous condition and situation. God has decreed: “that whoso should possess this land of promise, from that time (the time of this prophecy) henceforth and forever, should serve him, the true and only God, or they should be swept off when the fullness of his wrath should come upon them . . . And the fullness of his wrath cometh upon them when they are ripened in iniquity; for behold, this is a land which is choice above all other lands; wherefore he that doth possess it shall serve God, or be swept off; for it is the everlasting decree of God” (Ether 1:30, 32).

How near are we to being fully ripened in iniquity? The population of the USA was 312 million in 2012. Here are some statistics: Since 1960 we have seen violent crimes increased 463%; out of wedlock births increased 461%; children living in single-parent homes increased 200%; teen suicides increased 200%; welfare recipients increased 150%; cohabitating couples without marriage increased tenfold; divorces have doubled; SAT scores are down 60%; there have been 55-60 million abortions since 1973; homosexuality is exploding. On June 26, 2015, the US Supreme Court by a 5-4 vote legalized homosexual marriages. Celebrating this landmark decision, President Obama lit up the White House with rainbow colored lights as a show of support! Will the fate of Sodom and Gomorrah befall the USA in coming days? As it was in the days of Lot . . . Even thus shall it be in the day the Son of Man is revealed” (Luke 17:28-30).

On January 30, 2009, I dreamed that I was at a meeting, and a man was weeping as he talked, in a prophetic way, about the future of our country. The word lawlessness was mentioned. I was reminded of the words of Mormon, as he mourned over the condition of his people: “O, the depravity of my people! . . . they are without principle and past feeling . . . I can not any longer enforce my commands [lawlessness]” (Moroni 9:17, 20-21). “. . . how can we expect that God will stay his hand in judgment against us?” (Moroni 9:12). Surely the Lord is weeping over the USA as he wept over Jerusalem (Luke 13:34).

On March 17, 2017, I recorded in my journal: Franklin Graham, son of Evangelist Billy Graham, said, “I believe God’s hand intervened in the 2016 election to stop the godless, atheistic, progressive agenda from taking control of our country.” I agreed. I had said after Donald Trump was nominated that if he gets elected it will be by divine intervention! The results of the 2016 election comforted me. We were reassured that Joseph’s land (the USA) was still being blessed by “the good will of him that dwelt in the bush” (Deuteronomy 33:16).

The Lord promised Abraham he would spare Sodom if only ten righteous souls could be found there. He will also spare our country for the sake of a righteous praying remnant. We must strive to be in that saving remnant. “yea, and I say unto you, that if it were not for the prayers of the righteous, who are now in the land, that ye would even now be visited with utter destruction . . . it is by the prayers of the righteous that ye are spared; now therefore if ye will cast out the righteous from among you, then will not the Lord stay his hand, but in his fierce anger he will come out against you” (Alma 8:31,33).

My Love to All,
Francis Harper

Is the USA a Christian Nation?

On February 29, 1892, the US Supreme Court by a 9-0 vote, declared the United States of America a Christian nation. In a speech given in Ankara, Turkey, in April 2009, Barack H. Obama stated: “The USA is no longer a Christian nation.” He continued, “We are a nation of Christians, Jews, Muslims and Buddhists; a nation bound by ideals and a set of values.”

President Obama’s statement disturbed many of the citizens of our great land, especially the Christians. But we need to ask ourselves: Is the USA a Christian nation? If not, why not? If not, what are we going to do about it?

“Unto the righteous (this choice land) shall be blessed forever. And behold, it is wisdom that this land should be kept from the knowledge of other nations for behold many nations would overrun the land, (happening today) that there would be no place for an inheritance” (2 Nephi 1:15-17).

One of the issues of the 2016 election was building a wall to protect our nation from being overrun by people from other nations. Immigration has become a hotly debated issue. Evidently the Lord is not in favor of entirely open borders surrounding our country.

Lehi, a descendant of Joseph, sold into Egypt; the first prophet mentioned in The Book of Mormon, prophesied of our land. “. . . there shall none come into this land, save they shall be brought by the hand of the Lord. Wherefore this is consecrated unto him whom he shall bring. And if it so be that they shall serve him according to the commandments (the ten commandments and the great commandments to love God and neighbor) which he hath given, it shall be a land of liberty unto them, wherefore, they shall never be brought down into captivity: if so, it shall be because of iniquity. But unto the righteous it shall be blessed forever. Wherefore I Lehi have obtained a promise, that inasmuch as those whom the Lord shall bring out of the land of Jerusalem (and elsewhere) shall keep his commandments which he hath given, they shall prosper on the face of the land. And they shall be kept from all other nations, that they may possess the land unto themselves. And they shall dwell safely forever (2 Nephi 1:10-21).

The blessings we have received to date in this choice land of America have resulted from the many in our land who have served “the God of the land, who is Jesus Christ” (Ether 1:35). In an address given in Kansas City, October 12, 1966, Henry R. Luce, noted mentor and Christian, associated with Time, Inc., pointed out that “this age is already being called post-Christian, an age that doesn’t know God or how to find Him. Our need is surely the restoration of the faith as our fathers knew it.” He continued, “We have been living off the Christian capital of previous generations.” (Vol. 1, Book of Mormon Deeps. Weldon and Butterworth. Page 32).

The landmark decision made by the U.S. Supreme Court on June 17, 1963, declaring prayer and Bible reading in public schools unconstitutional, was evidence that the USA was becoming a post-Christian nation.

Clean Title. Asking $3,900 OBO for friends. looking at the market people are asking 1-2k more then this for 09-11 Aveo's with less then 50k mi Thanks! FB message or call/text 816-694-6032

CORRECTIONAL SURGERY FOR SISTER JUDITH AGWANDA

Yesterday sister Judith Agwanda, Pam's mother, was admitted in a hospital for correctional hip surgery. Sister Judith had had a hip surgery a few year back. But still she still experienced pain. Recently she was in a lot of pain she could not sleep at night.

This week she went to see a doctor and was immediately admitted. The doctor says the earlier surgery was not well done. That the metal had eaten into the bone to the extent that the bone is almost breaking or splitting. He recommended she be admitted and a surgery be done immediately. Judith is waiting for the operation tomorrow or the day after. It will cost $3,000 inclusive of doctor's charges and hospital in-patient expenses.

We are asking for your prayers that The Lord may bless sister Judith. We are also appealing for your financial support to help raise the stated amount towards this need.

Update on Stone Church Sanctuary Repair

Hello Restored Gospel Family,

The bid for the Sanctuary repair is finally in! :) They are going with an option of a special caulking to bridge the gap between the roof and the stone walls. The cost will be $5,082

Larry Crozier was able to secure a construction company that has a good reputation and has used this caulking substance before with great success.

I've attached the Stained Glass window pamphlet that is a reproduction of information from the original window committee who were responsible for putting in those magnificent windows. I hope you enjoy!

Prayers for Brother Ram Baral

Prayers for Brother Ram Baral

Dear Saints,

Due to his work as an intermediary diplomat during the Singapore meeting of the US President, Donald J. Trump, with Kim Jong-un, Supreme Leader of North Korea, Elder Ram Baral was personally greeted by President Trump and was given an award for his service.

Brother Baral helped coordinate the services of the diplomats of the Nepalese, Singapore and US governments, including the Singapore police and the Nepalese/Gurkha Army.

Perhaps due to his previous acquaintance with President Trump, Brother Ram has been invited to meet the President again. He has an appointment to see the President at the White House at 9 A.M. EST., on May 1, 2019. Our brother Ram covets the prayers of all the saints of the Restoration Branches as he prepares for this important meeting, and for the presence of the Holy Spirit during the one hour visit itself.

As an elder of the church of Jesus Christ, as it presently exists within the Restoration Branches, Brother Ram plans to give a copy of the 1908 edition of The Book of Mormon to the President. He also plans to introduce some of the scriptures recorded within The Book of Mormon which were written specifically for the inhabitants of this choice land, created and “preserved for a righteous people” (Ether 1:29). He may also point out passages from the Bible referring to Joseph’s land, such as Genesis 49:22-26 and Deuteronomy 33:13-17.

Any thoughts or suggestions, prompted by the Holy Spirit, related to this visit at the White House will be appreciated.

Brother Ram will be leaving December 20, 2018, on another mission trip to Asia, which will be several months in duration. He will be visiting the saints in Tibet, Mongolia, Beijing, Shanghai, Hong Kong, Rangoon and as the Lord directs. Please pray for his good health, safety and success in doing the Lord’s will.

Francis Harper Message for 12/7/2018

Dear Ones,

Those who question the validity of The Book of Mormon being the word of God and a second witness of Jesus Christ need to know that the number of non-Restorationists who accept The Book of Mormon as scripture is growing year by year. Every religiously inclined person who has a sincere desire to know the truth should claim the promise given in The Book of Mormon: “. . . if ye shall ask with a sincere heart with real intent, having faith in Christ, he will manifest the truth of it unto you, by the power of the Holy Ghost; and by the power of the Holy Ghost you may know the truth of all things” (Moroni 10:5).

On January 9, 1993, I recorded this testimony: Ed Rust, a Catholic and an employee of the Quaker Oats Company, occasionally stopped at our store. After doing business we often discussed passages of scripture from the Bible. The Book of Mormon was never mentioned. One night during his travels Ed found a copy of The Book of Mormon in his motel room. As he read that evening the Holy Spirit bore witness that it, like the Bible, is the word of God. The following morning he called me and with an excited voice said, “Francis, The Book of Mormon is the word of God.” I responded, “Ed, did I ever share my Book of Mormon testimony with you?” His answer was “no.” The promise is true: “ . . .by the power of the Holy Ghost you may know the truth of all things” (Moroni 10:5).

On April 29, 2013, I met Benezer, Napatutan at the Doha International Airport on the Persian Gulf. We were returning from mission twelve in Nepal and Northeast India. I was studying the Bible during our seven hour layover. As I studied, Benezer an airport employee, interrupted me as he said, “you are the only person I have ever seen studying the Bible in this airport.” At this point, I reached into my brief-case and pulled out The Book of Mormon. As I held it up, I said, “I believe The Book of Mormon is holy scripture too.” He nodded as he said, “yes, it is a second witness of Jesus Christ and supports the Bible.” I asked, “who are you?” He answered, “I am a Seventh Day Adventist from the Philippines.” Surely our meeting in the heart of the Islamic world was a divine appointment. Richard Hahn, priest, of Maysville, Missouri, was with me during this mission and witnessed this conversation.

In a 1973 “missionary” copy of the Book of Mormon, the foreward was written by Dr. Marcus Bach, former head of the School of Religion at the University of Iowa. Dr. Bach is not a member of any church teaching the Book of Mormon. Here are a few quotes from Dr. Bach’s testimony: “Ever since its unprecedented appearance in 1830, the Book of Mormon has been one of the most controversial, engrossing, and thought-inspiring Scriptures among the revealed religions of the world. . . “Here, then, is a new scripture, discovered in America, presenting to all a book intended to supplement the Bible rather than supplant it, designed to complement previous revelations, rather than compete with them, written to prove the divinity of Christ rather than deny it. With this in mind, the Book of Mormon is indispensable to all religiously oriented people who have their secret questions about the interplay of God and man and who seek their own honest answers to a living faith in these modern “latter days.”

Paul, in his letter to the Romans, wrote: “And, as much as in me . . . I am ready to preach the gospel to you that are at Rome also. For I am not ashamed of the gospel of Christ; for it is the power of God unto salvation to everyone that believeth . . .” (Romans 1:15-16).

The pure unadulterated [untampered by man] gospel of the kingdom needs to be preached until the end comes (Matthew 24:32 IV; 24:14 KJV). We, like Paul, can say without equivocation and a single moment of hesitancy, “I am not ashamed of the gospel of Christ; for it is the power of God unto salvation to everyone that believeth . . .!”

The Book of Mormon is tangible evidence that Joseph Smith, Jr., was a prophet, called of God, to restore the gospel of Jesus Christ in these latter days.

My Love to All,
Francis Harper

Be Not Ashamed

My first employer was a farmer who lived about thirty miles from our home. My board and room was furnished as part of my wages. My parents came to visit me one Sunday and brought me a church book for my 17th birthday. I recall that I was somewhat embarrassed by, or ashamed of the gift! I must have been concerned about what my employer might think. This incident in my adolescent years has taught me how sensitive we are to the response of our acquaintances on matters of our faith and beliefs. Some may be intimidated by fear of being rejected by family or friends.

This issue of being ashamed of our faith is addressed in the Scriptures. Jesus said, “Whosoever shall be ashamed of me, and of my words in this adulterous and sinful generation, of him also shall the Son on Man be ashamed, when he cometh in the glory of his Father with the holy angels” (Mark 8:41 IV; Mark 8:38 KJV). “And they shall not have part in that resurrection [resurrection of the just] when he cometh” (Mark 8:42).

It is written in The Book of Mormon that some of those who had tasted of the fruit of the tree of life had become ashamed due to the scornful behavior of those who were in “a great and spacious building” which “was filled with people, both old and young, both male and female; and their manner of dress was exceeding fine; and they were in the attitude of mocking and pointing their fingers toward those who had come at, and were partaking of the fruit. And after they had tasted of the fruit they were ashamed, because of those that were scoffing at them; and they fell away into forbidden paths and were lost” (1 Nephi 2:73-76). “And great was the multitude that did enter into that . . . building. And after they did enter into that building they did point the finger of scorn at me, and those that were partaking of the fruit also; but we heeded them not . . . for as many as heeded them had fallen away” (1 Nephi 2:82-84).

These words from The Book of Mormon are a warning to those who might be influenced by some of their friends who are making some disparaging remarks about Joseph Smith, Jr., the angel Moroni, the golden plates [The Book of Mormon] or who may be calling the Restoration Branch Movement a “religious cult.” Remember the words: “We heeded them not.”

We should never forget that Jesus was “despised and rejected of men; a man of sorrows, and acquainted with grief . . . he was oppressed, and he was afflicted, yet he opened not his mouth . . .” (Isaiah 53:3, 7). He heeded them not!

Many people have been warned to shun the teachings of the Restoration and The Book of Mormon. After being rebuffed a few times, Restorationists tend to neglect sharing their testimony. Both sides often remain aloof from one another. This hinders our witnessing.

Once again the words of Paul are appropriate. He wrote: “Brethren, the gospel preached of me is not after man, neither was I taught it, but by revelation of Jesus Christ” (Galatians 1:11-12). We can say the same, the Restoration gospel is not of man, it came by the revelation of Jesus Christ and the ministry of angels.

Paul wrote: “God hath chosen the foolish [considered foolish] things of the world to confound the wise; and God hath chosen the weak things of the world to confound the things which are mighty; and base things of the world, and things which are despised [like The Book of Mormon] hath God chosen” (1 Corinthians 1:27-28). Be not ashamed.

Just FYI

Walton became an adulterer. He abandoned his wife for another woman.

He had attended the same congregation as me for a while, and after reading his book, I met with him privately to ask him to repent from leaving the RLDS. He said he was going to build Zion. I asked, with what church? He said, without a church. I said, you can't, because the scriptures say the church brings forth the Kingdom. I noticed very shortly after this meeting with him, he started claiming he had a church. I met with him in 1980, before these paper articles were written.

The articles are in relation to the discovery of the fabricated document termed, 'The Joseph Smith Blessing', by forger Mark Hofmann. The quote and claim regarding Joseph Smith III's testimony in the Temple Lot Case has also been used by the LDS/Mormon apologists in the past in an attempt to discredit Joseph III being successor. The testimony of Joseph Smith III's isn't fully given by those with this agenda. Here is a good examination Setting Apart of Joseph Smith III Young Joseph didn't automatically become the church's prophet when his father 'ordained'/designated him...obviously...his father was still alive. Eugene Walton's claims were just silly.
