FASTING AND PRAYING FOR THE KINGDOM OF GOD: OCTOBER 30, 2020

From: Paul Gage

FASTING AND PRAYING FOR THE KINGDOM OF GOD: OCTOBER 30, 2020

God's Blessings to the Saints and friends,

Many times we hear comments such as, "Are We There Yet?" or "Are We Having Fun Yet?"

Of course, it depends on where you are going if you are "there yet," and quite often it is our "frame of mind" that determines if we are having "fun yet." I wonder how many times Moses was asked those questions on the forty year excursion in the wilderness. Our frame of mind includes all aspects of our being, spiritual, physical. mental, emotional and so forth. With some things, we want to see the end result before we start, but that might take away "all the fun."

Should fasting and praying be "fun?" Fun is defined in the 1828 Merriam Webster dictionary as "What provides amusement or enjoyment." I think God must oft times "have fun" as He watches in amusement when we do things in a lukewarm manner or just outright disobey His commandments. The amusement might come from a situation where God tells us to take Route A and we take Route B and end up in a dead end or maybe a swamp. Or when we go to a wedding feast" and run out of oil before the Groom arrives. Don't we all think we are among the Wise Virgins?

However, our goal is the Kingdom of God on earth, Zion and we are obviously not there yet, but how are we making the journey? Could we have been in Zion long ago, like the Israelite's could have been in the Promised Land in a few weeks? DC 102 seems to indicate that it could have happened in the 1830's.

How about the "fun?" Let us look at it as enjoyment. In a fasting class some months ago, I asked the class if anyone really enjoyed fasting. One person raised his hand and said he enjoyed fasting because it is in obedience to God's commands. I then asked if anyone enjoyed going without food. No hands went up. We know there is a great difference between going without food and true fasting. Yes, fasting from food is a sacrifice, but we can find enjoyment in the sacrifice because it pleases God.

The same can be said for the difference between casual prayer and fervent, effectual prayer. Sometimes, casual prayer no matter where, when, or by whom can literally put us to sleep. Have you ever fallen asleep while saying your prayers or being in church? You don't want to suffer the initial fate of Eutychus in Acts 20:7-12.

My point this week is to try to look beyond the sacrifice to the enjoyment of pleasing our Heavenly Father who supplies all our needs. Plus, as the hymn says, "Never Be Discouraged. Go ahead, sing a verse right now. "Yes, 2020 has been a trying year and only God knows what will happen during or after the election next Tuesday. That is the beauty of it all, GOD KNOWS! Since He is the only one who knows the way, let us find greater "fun" enjoyment as we comply with His commandments. I am sure the Apostle Paul had a world of "fun" being chained in a Roman jail and getting to preach to all the guards and governors.

Remember, DC 85:21 a, "Also, I give unto you a commandment, that ye shall continue in prayer and fasting from this time forth." In addition dear Saints remember the promise we find in DC 83:15 c. as well as Psalm 23, "The Lord IS My Shepherd."

The Lord Bless you and Keep You and may HIS countenance shine upon you.

Providing healing resources, support, and hope for victims of domestic violence in the church and Prevention Education-Training for those who shepherd the flock.

"Many Christians cannot bear to acknowledge that spousal abuse is an enduring problem within our very own walls. Both individually and as a faith community, we are ashamed and humiliated to admit the presence of such a problem. It is far easier to deny, to minimize, and to conceal...It's time to stop sweeping spousal abuse under the carpet." (Catherine Clark Kroeger, Peace and Safety in the Christian Home, 2008).

One Shepherd's Call to Shepherds of All Faiths to Stand Up for Healing and Justice: by Ken Chitwood

One time, I wrote a letter a letter to Pope Francis. I know…ridiculous.

What wasn’t ridiculous was the message I wrote to him: that before he goes off to save the climate and solve the refugee crisis and bring peace to the Middle East, he first needs to take care of priority number one—addressing sexual abuse in his church.

The Catholic Church has gotten the bad rap of being the sole proprietor of sexual abuse within religious institutions. But, as James Nolan wrote for VICE a couple years ago, “Modern history has been riddled with revelations of religious child abuse.” From New Religious Movements to BuddhistsMuslim madrassas to Mormon schoolsHindu gurus to Methodist ministers, RLDS/Restoration/Community of ChristAmerican Orthodox Jewsseems that religion has a serious, systemic, abuse problem.

Indeed, sexual abuse has plagued humanity for centuries. Even the Hebrew Scriptures contain tragic stories of abuse, rape, and incest. One of the historical books of these Scriptures relates how Amnon, the son of the famed King David, attempted to force himself on his half-sister, Tamar (2 Samuel 13:11-20).

There are still, today, plenty of Tamars. Too often, religious leaders play the part of Amnon when they are called to look after the vulnerable, especially children (Psalm 127:3Ephesians 6:4James 1:27).

As a member of the clergy, let me first tell you: if you are one of the abused, been impacted by this abuse, or you’ve been turned off of religion because of this hypocrisy, I am so, horribly, sorry.

This should go without saying, but abuse has no place in the sanctuary of a church or any other place supposed to provide love, safety, and justice to all regardless of age, gender, or position in life.

I hope that healing has come to your life and that you have not been been forced to continually carry a burden of abuse. But I know that some of you still live in the desolate conditions of someone like Tamar.

For you, there is the promise of Isaiah 61, which speaks to how God will deliver the oppressed, mend the brokenhearted, set free the captives, and comfort those who mourn. It is my prayer that these promises would all come true for you as you are supported by professionals, family, friends, and even the church as you lead a healthy, fulfilled life—physically, emotionally, and spiritually.

Indeed, I hope that religious institutions do not continue to let you down. St. Francis of Assisi, the Pope’s namesake, once said that where there is injury, we should sow pardon. In this case, we must be clear that victims of abuse are not in the least bit responsible or at fault for the harm done to them.

In that vein, religious leaders and organizations must go beyond apologies and take appropriate action to hold accountable those who have abused their power and to prevent that type of abuse in the future.

The pardon sowed in the case of these injuries should not be for the abusers. They must be prosecuted and punished accordingly. Further, churches need to take the issue of abuse as a loud and clear call for reform and to no longer protect the abusers, but admonish them, provide support for the abused, and protect future generations from having to suffer similar mistreatment at the hands of ministers and leadership figures.

Our religious institutions must be remade into places of love, justice, and safety for people of all ages, genders, and dispositions.

This type of reform will not happen overnight. It will take years to make any form of reparation, rid religion of sexual indecency (or at least make the attempt), and bring transparency to religious leadership, which is too often clouded in secrecy and power.

So too, for people who have been abused, there is no quick fix. I wish I could say there was. However, as the promise from Isaiah makes clear, in Jesus there is hope and healing, liberation and justice. I can only pray that the reality of those promises are evident in your life in the days, weeks, and years to come.

Until then, religious leaders like me have work to do—to interrupt the injustices being perpetrated by our very own leaders on our very own people.

ARE YOU READY??

From: Paul Gage

ARE YOU READY??

Dear Saints and Friends,

ARE YOU READY FOR _____________________________________________?

You can fill in the blank. Winter, election results, winter needs for your vehicle, ice melt, food shortage, another virus, etc. etc. etc.

We know we must be prepared for the return of Jesus Christ. That is spiritual preparation.

We must also be prepared for the needs of each season, as well as what the election results may bring. Remember how hard it was to find certain essential items just a few months go? Things could get worse!

I am just being realistic. America and the world is in a real jam. Only God knows how things are going to work out, but He still calls us to Be Prepared!!

As the old saying goes, "It is better to have something and not need it than to need it and not have it." What if your electricity, water, telephone, and/or gas goes off???

Yes, I know and believe with all my heart that God can supply our needs, but still yet, He tells us to be ready.

Feel free to pass this along to others. Maybe even our neighbors.

God bless
Paul Gage

Spiritually Won Knowledge Part 9

From:  B S TURNER Owner

Spiritually Won Knowledge Part 9

Moroni brings a powerful message in the 21st chapter of Alma. One that should bring guidance to us this day.

41 And it came to pass that he rent his coat, And he took a piece thereof and wrote upon it - "In memory of our God, our religion and freedom and our peace, our wives and our children" - And he fastened it upon the end of a pole thereof;
Notice the order of priorities, he understood that if he put God first all things will follow…what would our list look like if we were in that same situation? Let’s look a little further into the story.
43 And he bowed himself to the earth, And he prayed mightily unto his God for the blessings of liberty to rest upon his brethren, so long as there should a band of Christians remain to possess the land –
Today as with everyday this is the prayer that we should be offering up – notice that he prayed for his brethren…not himself. We need to make the effort and make sure that our brothers and sisters are blessed.
45 Yea, all those who were true believers in Christ took upon them gladly the name of Christ, or Christians, as they were called, because of their belief in Christ, which should come - And therefore, at this time, Moroni prayed that the cause of the Christians and the freedom of the land might be favored.
And again another part of the prayer that we should be offering…I am not sure what other conditions need to exist in our world before we learn what Moroni is teaching us here.
50 And it came to pass that when Moroni had proclaimed these words, Behold, the people came running together with their armors girded about their loins, rending their garments in token, or as a covenant, that they would not forsake the Lord their God –

And as we read this step back and think of it spiritually. First they came running together to prepare for the fight that was about to take place. Embracing a covenant that we would not forsake our Lord. There are many fights that we should be running together towards this day and time. Remember there are many battles in a war and the more battles that you win the more likely you are to win the war!

Where else have we read about armor and how properly worn protects us from the very fiery darts that are being hurled at us today.
Make no mistake, you may not see or even feel them but they are being thrown at you daily and weakening us a little at a time. Many do not have their armor properly fitted – if there are large of gaps in any of the pieces you are vulnerable. Think of the gaps as a lack of knowledge of the scriptures, doubts, judgements or even faith in the very promises that Christ died for.

If we were to pray as Moroni prayed for our brethren what would happen? Paul gives us insight in 1 Corinthians 2:12-16

12 Now we have received, not the spirit of the world, but the Spirit which is of God; that we might know the things that are freely given to us of God.
13 Which things also we speak, not in the words which man's wisdom teacheth, but which the Holy Ghost teacheth; comparing spiritual things with spiritual.
14 But the natural man receiveth not the things of the Spirit of God; for they are foolishness unto him; neither can he know them, because they are spiritually discerned.
15 But he that is spiritual judgeth all things, yet he himself is judged of no man.
16 For who hath known the mind of the Lord, that he may instruct him? But we have the mind of Christ.

If Paul is right, and I think that he is, we have the mind of Christ which means that we have the mind (knowledge) to understand how to approach the Lord and ask him for a clarity of vision in all that is happening and all that we should be doing.

Many times we are so sure of our direction and thoughts because of a “good feeling” that we do put blinders on and are not able to see the “signs” that are all around us.

When Earl Curry was petitioning the Lord while at the Temple in Kirtland this insight was given to him “The working out, the achieving of the high purposes for life which are dear to the heart of Him who is the Eternal Father, in the finest and deepest meanings of that name, require extraordinary men and women in the body of the church are also required. Ordinary men could not be trusted with the great powers that shall arise out of the endowment because of their narrow self-centeredness that is so much a part of ordinary life. These great powers can only be delegated or placed upon His servants and His people as they are extraordinarily purified in body, mind, spirit, and purpose.”

What is the high purpose of your life? The answer is given in 1 Corinthians 12:8, check it out and see where you fit. Once you find where you fit the challenge is to get in the game!

Everyday that passes we are that much closer….closer to the election, closer to the end of life, closer to the end of time, closer to seeing Christ. Are you ready?
