Give Back Hope - Malawi Youth Home

Give Back Hope - Malawi Youth Home

Dear Saints,

Our sister, Penny Curtis, president of Give Back Hope International, has recently returned from a trip to the Restoration Youth Home in Malawi. What a blessing it was for her to be able to go and spend time with our wonderful staff and the children, and to be part of the daily operations, and take care of business in person.

Thanks to the support of the saints, several upgrades were made which included new beds and mattresses as needed, new shoes for some children, uniforms for the guards, aprons for the kitchen staff, electricity to one of the smaller dwellings, solar lighting, and improved schooling for some of the children. One other very needed purchase was a vehicle.

We have several children who are in need of a regular sponsor. They love knowing that someone is praying for them and receiving letters via email. Additional current needs include funds to send some of the children to boarding school, new clothes, and T-shirts for the group activities. We are also investigating purchasing our own property for the Youth Home, rather than renting.

At this time, we are asking an interest in your prayers and, if the Lord leads you, to make a donation –either individual or congregational – on behalf of the children at the Youth Home. Donations may be made through the website at https://givebackhopeintl.org or by mailing a check to:

Give Back Hope International
PO Box 108
Independence MO 64051

If you would like information about how to sponsor a child or to have a presentation at your congregation about the Youth Home and Give Back Hope, please contact Tammy at ttandy@givebackhopeintl.org. We are also hosting a program for sponsors (see attached flyer), and we invite anyone else to attend who is interested in the work in Malawi. The program will be at 6:30 PM, Sunday, December 4, at Gospel Park Restoration Branch. This is a free event, but reservations are required.

Please RSVP to Penny Curtis at 816-682-3205

Board members will be available to answer any questions.

In gospel bonds,
Tammy Tandy

Yesteryear Christmas

Yesteryear Christmas

"MERRY CHRISTMAS" If you are old enough to remember watching the 1950's Gumby Show, Then you will recall that toys were used in the story book. Mid Continent Library (North Branch) has set a display theme of Yesteryear Christmas Village. I was asked to share the section of Christmas toys past. As I was setting it up, I realized how we may recall our past favorites that we played with, acting out the world which we were growing up in. They helped to build our imagination of our future.

If you would like to recall those memories and share together with your family, then I would like to share that part of the Spirit of Christmas Past with you.

The Library is open day and evenings, and even on Sunday. Come on down and see if your Grandchild can find the answers to the six questions. There is a follow up fact sheet at the counter pertaining to the questions.

Have fun and enjoy

Lavigne Family Fundraiser Update - Goal Met

 From: Jessica Holmes

Lavigne Family Fundraiser Update

Saints, the call went out and was answered. I want to thank everyone who donated to the fundraiser for the Lavigne family. The goal has been met and exceeded in this past week. Your donations, prayers, and support means so much.

We are closing the fundraiser now, but do ask continued prayers for the Lavignes as they continue the immigration journey. Many prayers are being answered and we know the Lord has a great work in store for each of them.

To each of you who sent cash, checks, PayPal or Fundly donations, thank you. Some of you don’t even know me or the Lavignes, but the Lord placed it in your heart to give and what a blessing you are!

God bless each one of you.

SCRB Zion's League SHOE DRIVE

SCRB Zion's League SHOE DRIVE

Hello Saints!

Have you heard about our SHOE DRIVE? The South Crysler Restoration Branch Zion’s League has set a goal to collect 2,500 pairs of gently used shoes for people in need. The shoes will supply inventory for micro-enterprises in impoverished areas around the world. 150 pairs of shoes provide enough inventory for one family to open a little shop and change their lives.

Will you help us help others? All it takes is a peek in your closet for those shoes you don’t wear anymore. All styles and sizes are accepted. Shoes must be in pairs and in good shape – no holes or tears please.

How do you donate your used shoes? Several congregations have agreed to help out, and you may have noticed a drop off box in your foyer or fellowship hall. That’s the perfect place to put your donation.

If there is no drop off box available to you, you can bring your donation to South Crysler RB any Sunday (8:30 am-12:30pm & 5:30 pm-7:30 pm) or Wednesday (6:30-8:30 pm). We have a donation box in the upper foyer and the lower foyer.

If you don’t have time to get your donation to SCRB, give Erica Bailey a text/call (816-686-6257), and she will come pick them up. Just let her know when you will leave them on your front porch in a plastic bag.
Our shoe drive ends December 23. Thank you for donating your used shoes and helping us meet our goal!

Grow Up Snowflake!

Hello Saints!

Teaching children emotional intelligence is important, but it should not be confused with emotional dependency. In this world today where Christians are being challenged to accept all kinds of inappropriate behaviors and ideologies, it's a good idea to be very clear about what is and isn't okay when expressing one's own thoughts and feelings.

This video might give you some help in thinking through how to distinguish emotional intelligence from emotional dependency and how that relates to teaching our children how to navigate the world.

Prayers Answered for Jacob Hummel - Thank You

Prayers Answered for Jacob Hummel - Thank You

I wanted to let you know that our prayers have been answered. Thank you. My son Jacob had his knee surgery today and although I spent almost 5 hours waiting in the car (because the hospital aren't allowing in anyone but patients) he walked out just 2.5 hours after the procedure, got in the car and we were allowed to go home. It has been a long day and all we've done since is eat and sleep but he seems to be doing very well. He's not needed any pain relief since, and the procedure ended up costing $7,500 instead of the $15,000 we were expecting. It is still a huge cost but couldn't be avoided and we were much relieved that it's significantly less than the estimate we were given. He's been given some time off work (a few weeks so far) and hopes to return soon to complete the last 6 months of his 4 year apprenticeship. And so I continue to ask for prayers for a full recovery for him.

Thank you for your continued prayers. It is greatly appreciated and gives us much comfort just knowing that people are praying for him.

With lots of love from Your Sister In Christ,
Monique Hummel, South Australia.

Nephi's Prophetic Interpretation of Lehi's Vision

Nephi's Prophetic Interpretation of Lehi's Vision

See the following link for a presentation at the Book of Mormon Roundtable, November 20, 2022.

“Nephi’s Prophetic Interpretation of Lehi’s Vision” by Jon Tandy.

When the link opens, click on 'Watch Again', to start the video.

https://livestream.com/waldoavenue/events/10697165

The presentation begins at about 09:45.

This class demonstrates some interesting parallels between the symbolic/visual components of Lehi’s vision and the prophecy given to Nephi regarding Jesus Christ and the future of Lehi’s descendants.

The deep testimony of Jesus Christ plus the complex literary structure of the account, interweaving these different symbolic elements, provides additional testimony to the truth of the Book of Mormon narrative.

Looking to Hire Carpenter or Crafter

I am sadly having to part with my Grandmother’s piano, which has been in my home all of my life. I’m looking for someone who would be able to create a couple of shelves or similar small items from the wood and keys, which are in excellent condition. I’d like to be able to keep a part of this very special piano if at all possible.

If this is something you do or you know someone who does, please email me at:

Thank you so much!

God's Blessing

Hello Saints,

God truly blessed my family, and I am very thankful. We almost got scammed on our earlier trailer, but then God's miracle occurred, we found a bigger cheaper trailer with title thanks to my moving guy. Hopefully soon we will know when it will be moved and then work can begin. So, if any of you know how to build stairs, decks, or floors let me know we will get you the materials unless you have leftovers from a project you can donate to my family. We also need a skilled craftsman who knows bathrooms we need to reconfigure the master bath by pulling out a tub and moving shower over to where it is located. Don't worry we probably won't be able to start on that till next year but getting help for my parents who have also been a blessing for us to help get the few floors figured out before big snow would be awesome. Thank you all for your time. Hope you all had a blessed Thanksgiving and a blessed weekend. Thank you, Lord, and Jesus, for this miracle blessing.

Help Reprint the Inspired Version

 From: David Price

p.p.c@sbcglobal.net

Help Reprint the Inspired Version

Restoration Bookstore Needs Your Help
to Reprint the Inspired Version!

The Restoration Bookstore now faces an extraordinary opportunity, and a critical need. The extraordinary opportunity we face is that more people are now interested in the Inspired Version of the Bible than ever before. Not only are RLDS members ordering an increasing number of them, but so are the LDS, ex-LDS, and others—sometimes in very large quantities! In just the previous year, orders for this Scripture book have increased more than ten-fold!

The critical need we face is that our inventory of all the versions that we carry (Deluxe Leather, Hardback Leather, and Paperback) is now depleted, and will no longer be available until they are reprinted. When we notified you last winter that our supply of the Deluxe Leather version was then nearly depleted, you responded most generously, and we were able to commission the reprinting of that edition. (It is being printed now and will be available in early 2023.) But now we have run out of the Hardback Leather and Paperback versions too, so they must also be reprinted. Due to steeply rising costs, the additional funds now needed to reprint these two versions total approximately $115,000! Wisdom dictates that we not commission these orders until sufficient donations are received for the project.

Because we are a non-profit organization, the IRS requires that the preponderance of funds we receive come from donations instead of sales. While that rule keeps our prices low, it also makes us dependent on your donations for large printing projects, such as these. Donations for this project should be designated “For reprinting the Inspired Version.” Of course, any contributions made by individuals are tax-exempt, and a receipt will be provided.

In addition to the above challenges, another critical need we have is our Operating Fund, which pays for everything other than printing. It has now dipped to its lowest level in three years. In a few weeks, we will be required to pay $13,000 in county taxes from that fund, which will drain about half of its remaining balance.

Please consider donating any amount, large or small, to either of these endeavors. Thank you for helping us fulfill the extraordinary opportunity now before us, as well as helping us meet our critical needs! May God bless us all as we work together for the sake of the Kingdom!

Living in the Kingdom of God November 23, 2022

Living in the Kingdom of God November 23, 2022

Greetings Dear Saints,

Give thanks with a grateful heart, give thanks to the Holy One, Give thanks because He has given Jesus Christ, His Son. We should always be grateful/thankful to God for all He has done for us. I Thessalonians 5:18 says, “In everything give thanks, for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus concerning YOU.” We can be most thankful that we have a God who is real, loving, and forgiving. He sees and knows all that we do in our efforts to live in His Kingdom. Maybe sometimes, we think or hope that He does not see or know everything, but the following reading, as well as many scriptures, give us something to think about.

THE ROOM
In that place between wakefulness and dreams, I found myself in the room. There were no distinguishing features save for the one wall covered with small index-card files. They were like the ones in libraries that list titles by author or subject in alphabetical order. But these files, which stretched from floor to ceiling and seemingly endless in either direction, had very different headings. As I drew near the wall of files, the first to catch my attention was one that read “Girls I Have Liked.” I opened it and began flipping through the cards. I quickly shut it, shocked to realize that I recognized the names written on each one.

And then without being told, I knew exactly where I was. This lifeless room with its small files was a crude catalog system for my life. Here were written the actions of my every moment, big and small, in a detail my memory couldn’t match.

A sense of wonder and curiosity, coupled with horror, stirred within me as I began randomly opening files and exploring their contents. Some brought joy and sweet memories; others a sense of shame and regret so intense that I would look over my shoulder to see if anyone was watching. A file named “Friends” was next to one marked “Friends I Have Betrayed.”

The titles ranged from the mundane to the outright weird. “Books I Have Read,” “Lies I Have Told,” “Comfort I Have Given,” “Jokes I Have Laughed At.” Some were almost hilarious in their exactness: “Things I’ve Yelled at My Brothers.” Others I couldn’t laugh at: “Things I Have Muttered under My Breath at My Parents.” I never ceased to be surprised by the contents. Often there were many more cards than I expected. Sometimes there were fewer than I hoped.

I was overwhelmed by the sheer volume of the life I had lived. Could it be possible that I had the time in my life to write each of these thousands, possibly millions, of cards? But each card confirmed this truth. Each was written in my own handwriting. Each signed with my signature.

When I pulled out the file marked “Songs I Have Listened To,” I realized the files grew to contain their contents. The cards were packed tightly, and yet after two or three yards, I hadn’t found the end of the file. I shut it, shamed, not so much by the quality of music, but more by the vast amount of time I knew that file represented.

When I came to a file marked “Lustful Thoughts” I felt a chill run through my body. I pulled the file out only an inch, not willing to test its size, and drew out a card. I shuddered at its detailed contents. I felt sick to think that such a moment had been recorded.

Suddenly I felt an almost animal rage. One thought dominated my mind: “No one must ever see these cards! I have to destroy them!” In an insane frenzy I yanked the file out. Its size didn’t matter now. I had to empty it and burn the cards. But as I took the file at one end and began pounding it on the floor, I could not dislodge a single card. I became desperate and pulled out a card, only to find it as strong as steel when I tried to tear it.

Defeated and utterly helpless, I returned the file to its slot. Leaning my forehead against the wall, I let out a long, self-pitying sigh. And then I saw it. The title bore “People I Have Shared the Gospel With.” The handle was brighter than those around it, newer, almost unused. I pulled on its handle and a small box not more than three inches long fell into my hands. I could count the cards it contained on one hand.

And then the tears came. I began to weep. Sobs so deep that they hurt, started in my stomach and shook through me. I fell on my knees and cried. I cried out of shame, from the overwhelming shame of it all. The rows of file shelves swirled in my tear-filled eyes. No one must ever, ever know of this room. I must lock it up and hide the key.

But then as I pushed away the tears, I saw Him. No, please not Him. Not here. Oh, anyone but Jesus.

I watched helplessly as He began to open the files and read the cards. I couldn’t bear to watch His response. And in the moments I could bring myself to look at His face, I saw a sorrow deeper than my own. He seemed to intuitively go to the worst boxes. Why did He have to read every one?

Finally He turned and looked at me from across the room. He looked at me with pity in His eyes. But this was a pity that didn’t anger me. I dropped my head, covered my face with my hands and began to cry again. He walked over and put His arm around me. He could have said so many things. But He didn’t say a word. He just cried with me.

Then He got up and walked back to the wall of files. Starting at one end of the room, He took out a file and, one by one, began to sign His name over mine on each card.

“No!” I shouted, rushing to Him. All I could find to say was “No, no,” as I pulled the card from Him. His name shouldn’t be on these cards. But here it was, written in red so rich, so dark, so alive. The name of Jesus covered mine. It was written with His blood.

He gently took the card back. He smiled a sad smile and continued to sign the cards. I don’t think I’ll ever understand how He did it so quickly, but the next instant it seemed I heard Him close the last file and walk back to my side. He placed His hand on my shoulder and said, “It is finished.”

I stood up, and He led me out of the room. There was no lock on the door. There were still cards to be written.

Have you ever wondered how God looks at your life? Jesus tells us, “That every idle word that men shall speak, they shall give account thereof in the day of judgment” (Matthew 12:36). If we are honest with ourselves, we will admit with sorrow and regret that we have failed in our thoughts and actions. We, too, will blush in shame for thoughts harbored and deeds committed in secret. The Bible says in Romans 2:16 that “God shall judge the secrets of men by Jesus Christ.” The Apostle Peter preached “Repent ye therefore, and be converted, that your sins may be blotted out, when the times of refreshing shall come from the presence of the Lord” (Acts 3:19). Has Jesus blotted out your sins, or do they still haunt you today?

Would you like to be set free? Are the thoughts and actions of the past weighing you down? Our sins are a great weight on our hearts and lives. “If we say that we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us” (1 John 1:8). “For the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord” (Romans 6:23).

Jesus offers forgiveness. He came to earth and shed His blood for all sinners. The salvation plan is now complete. Would you like to be made whole? “If the Son therefore shall make you free, ye shall be free indeed” (John 8:36). (Psalm 51) Come to Jesus now! Repent and confess your sins. “If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness” (1 John 1:9). Trust Jesus to lead you to a satisfying life with Him. He will provide direction for your daily walk of life as you “live in the Kingdom of God.”

THE ROOM – Copyright 1995 New Attitudes/Joshua Harris.

This is just another reminder that every second of everyday matters as we live for and await the fullness of God’s Kingdom on earth. A song called, My Tribute: says, “The voices of a million angels could not express my gratitude. All that I am, or ever hope to be, I owe it all to THEE. To God be the Glory!”

A pilgrim is a person on a journey to a holy place. Let us be faithful pilgrims and be prepared to reach Zion.

A Pilgrim connection to us. John Howland was swept overboard during the voyage of the Mayflower to the new world. He was saved by other crew members. One of his many descendants was Joseph Smith Jr.

God is with you
