Virginia “Carol” Clement (Benner), 92 years old, left this world from her home at St. Mary’s Village in Blue Springs, MO and went to her eternal rest with her heavenly father on Friday November 24, 2017. Carol was born December 29, 1924 in Wagner, South Dakota to Stanley and Beulah (Lowe) Benner. She spent her childhood in South Sioux City, Nebraska until her senior year of high school. She graduated from William Chrisman High School in 1942. Shortly thereafter she met her soon to be husband, Jack Clement. They were married in 1944 and enjoyed 73 wonderful years together before his passing earlier this year. Carol spent many years working as a switchboard operator at the RLDS Auditorium in Independence, MO and later supported her husband in their family owned business, Clement’s Remodeling. They lived in Raytown and Independence, Missouri as well as their lake home at Pomme De Terre Lake. Carol loved to sing and participated in many church choirs. She also provided special music often to her church congregations. Music was a very important part of her life. In her later years, she learned to play the organ and often filled her home with the sound of beautiful music.


Carol and Jack had two children, Nancy and Mark who blessed them with many grandchildren, great grandchildren and great-great grandchildren. She loved all of them and never left them without saying “I love you more”.


Carol was preceded in death by her husband Arthur Jack, parents, Stanley and Beulah, infant sister “Snooky”, brother, Melvin and sister, Nelda. She leaves behind her children, daughter Nancy Ann Carlson (Tom), son Arthur Mark Clement (Jo Ann); Grandchildren Bob Carlson (Michelle), Jim Carlson (Kristine), Carrie Reifsteck (Trent) and Tracy Thompson (Rocky); Eleven great grandchildren and seven great-great grandchildren and another soon-to-be.


A memorial service will be held Saturday December 30, 2017 at Missionary Restoration Branch church, 3415 N. Elsea Smith Rd., Buckner, MO at 4:00 p.m. Visitation will be held prior to the service at 2:00 at the church. Carol will be placed to rest next to her husband, Jack, at the Missouri Veterans Cemetery in Higginsville, MO in a private ceremony.


In lieu of flowers the family requests contributions be made to the church.

Assistance​ for Independence Branch​

I am seeking a few men from to assist the Independence Branch in sealing a portion of our parking lot, while its relatively warm outside. You may or may not know that we are a relatively small and older generation branch. I am the youngest at 43, but was injured during my military deployment and have a bad back.

It should not take that long - we have a few 5-gallon cans of sealant that we need to spread in a couple of sections. I would say 5 or so men would be perfect​ and it would only take a couple of hours.

What Then? - Message for 12/1/17

Death is one of the stern realities of life. Sooner or later, death comes to our own household and eventually to ourselves. What then?

A story is told of an elderly gentleman meeting a happy young man, who had just graduated from high school. The older man asked the youth about his future plans. He said he was going to select a prestigious university and law school to attend. He would graduate from the school of law. The elderly man asked, “What then?”

The young man said he would then seek and obtain employment in one of the best, most reputable law firms in the country. Again he was asked, “What then?

He answered, “When I get well established in my chosen profession I will build a home, get married, and have a family. Once more he was asked, “What then?”

He said, “I plan to earn a large sum of money, which will allow me to retire early in life. Once again he was asked the familiar question: “What then?”

He said, “I plan to enjoy my later years participating in golfing, attending sports activities and in traveling to visit the many exotic places around the world.” Once more, he was asked the same question. What then?” The young man did not answer. Many today ignore, or neglect to seek the answer to this most important question of all!



It is written, “Many shall say, eat, drink and be merry, for tomorrow we will die: and it shall be well with us . . . and if it so be that we are guilty, God will beat us with a few stripes, and at last we shall be saved in the kingdom of God” (2 Nephi 12:9-11). Satan and his cohorts have mastered the art of deception. He will say, “There is no hell; and he saith unto them, I am no devil” (2 Nephi 12:27). This is deception! It has been said, “If we live like hell here, that’s probably where we will be in the hereafter!”

Life for all of us—rich and poor, bond and free, good and evil—does not end at the time of our death. This life is only a brief prelude to our eternal existence. Dwight Moody once said, “I have conducted many funerals but I have never buried a dead person.

The Jews had been expecting Jesus to deliver them from the bondage of Rome. When this did not happen, many of them turned away from him. “Then said Jesus unto the twelve, will ye also go away? Then Simon Peter answered him, Lord, to whom shall we go? Thou hast the words of eternal life” (John 6:67-68). Peter spoke the truth. Jesus has “the words of eternal life.” He answers the question, “What then?”

The two men who were crucified with Jesus represent every person who has lived, is living, or will live, in this world. Both were sinners, and they represent the great division; the great divide; the sheep and the goats; the wheat and the tares. One was a non-believer. The non-believer received no promise. The other was a penitent believer. To the believer Jesus said, “Today shalt thou be with me in paradise” (Luke 23:33-44). Simple belief is not enough, but it is certainly a good beginning. “I, Lord, am bound, when ye do what I say, but when ye do not what I say, ye have no promise” (D & C 81:3b).

The path we choose to walk in life should be based upon an accurate understanding of what happens to us after death. Remember, Jesus has the words of eternal life. His word will be as a lamp unto our feet and a light unto our path. See Psalm 119:105.

Study the Scriptures carefully under the tutelage of the Holy Spirit, “and he will guide you into all truth . . . and he will show you things to come” (John 16:13).

Widows Might Bazaar

The Second Annual Widows Might Bazaar is 10 am - 4 pm Saturday December 2 at Outreach Restoration Branch. There are eleven vendors and a wonderful variety of crafts being sold. There will be a lunch of magnificent macaroni and cheese or baked potato soup. And the world’s best hot cocoa will be served. Come to purchase a present or two and help support our widowed sisters in Africa. Widows Might is part of African Restoration Ministries.

Xmas in place of Christmas is seen as keeping Christ out of Christmas by substituting an “X” for Christ. But maybe there is more to it than meets the eye!

During the 2014 holiday season, I was reading the Scriptures with a musical channel on TV softly playing Christmas music in the background. As I paused to think about what I was reading, I casually looked up at the TV screen just in time to see a note that said something like this: “The X in Xmas is the Greek letter chi which means “Christ” or “cross.” (Chi is the first letter of the Greek word for Christ and is sometimes used alone.) I was riveted by this, being aware of chi in chiasmus, a style of writing a statement and repeating it in reverse order, which may be diagrammed in the form an X. This writing pattern has been identified in both the New and Old Testaments and, more recently, in The Book of Mormon. The letter for X (or cross) in the Hebrew is tau, also rendered as taw or tav (depicted as “X”, “t” and also “T”) all of which mean cross!

Tau is the last letter of the Hebrew alphabet. The earliest form (c. 1700 BC in early Semitic/Akkadian) appeared as a vertical cross, and later as an X. The letter also means “mark” as well as cross. Aaron is anointed with the “mark of God” on his forehead, as a type of the “anointed one”—the Messiah (Exodus 28:36-38 and Leviticus 8:9, 12). It is also considered as the mark over the doorposts in Egypt so the destroyer would pass them by (Exodus 12:23).
Jacob in The Book of Mormon reveals some additional insight. He indicates that the Jews were a stiff-necked people who rejected the Stone (the Messiah) and were given “many things they could not understand” because they looked beyond the “mark” (the cross). (Jacob 3:22-27 RLDS) [Jacob 4:14-16 LDS]. The letters “T” and “X” are widely used in numerous alphabets even today. The symbols are perhaps the oldest in the world, some scratched on ancient stones. They are found worldwide in various forms in ancient civilizations such as Egyptian, Babylonian, Phoenician, American Indian and the Maya. In Maya the tau symbol is represented in hieroglyphs, structures and iconography. The glyph IK is the day sign which carries a meaning of “wind” and is associated with Spiritual Breath, Inspiration, Purifier of the Body, symbolizing cleanliness and purity. A wall of “House C” at Palenque shows the T-shaped opening representing the wind. Quetzalcoatl, the Feathered or Plumed Serpent, rules this day sign associating his depiction as the God of the Wind with the IK glyph on his pectoral (breast), while other Maya figures are shown holding a T-shaped-cross, a symbol of the breath of life itself. It is also associated with the Tree of Life.

What began for me with the curiosity of chi as the X in Xmas, led me on an interesting journey of discovery and a better understanding of how God has revealed Himself, even in the chi and tau characters or symbols. So as we consider the birth of our Savior, our understanding is enriched to realize He cannot be hidden by any attempt to diminish His presence—even in the letter X in Xmas!

*Shiriley R. Heater passed away in the summer of 2017. She was raised in the RLDS church. When that church changed its name and minimized the prophet Joseph Smith and the Book of Mormon in their teachings, she left that church and became a scholar and author with one of the surviving groups (called Restoration Branches) which maintain their testimonies of the Restoration and the Book of Mormon.

She lived in Independence, Missouri. She traveled to Utah on several occasions to attend Book of Mormon conferences and seminars and contributed to many LDS articles and internet sites.
