Bruce Silas Phelps Obituary |
March 5, 1940 — November 28, 2023 Bruce Silas Phelps, a dedicated elementary school guidance counselor and beloved family man, passed away on November 28, 2023, in Independence, Missouri. He was born on March 5, 1940, in Portland, Oregon to Otis Ira Phelps and Eleanor Mae (Baldwin) Phelps. Bruce's passing leaves a void in the lives of his family and friends, who will forever cherish his memory. Bruce valued education greatly and diligently pursued his own studies. He graduated from Morehead High School in Minnesota in 1958 before obtaining his bachelor's degree from Minnesota State University in 1962. Continuing his academic journey, he completed his master's degree at North Dakota State University in 1968. Bruce dedicated his career to shaping young minds as an elementary school guidance counselor for the Raytown Consolidated School District #2. His passion for helping children navigate their way through school and life left a profound impact on countless students until his retirement in 1997. Outside of his professional life, Bruce was deeply involved in various community organizations. He served as a scout master and chaplain for both the boy scout camps and the Community of Christ Skylarks, Orioles, and O'Teens. These activities provided him with opportunities to guide and mentor young individuals beyond the classroom walls. Known for his warm personality and kindness, Bruce was a loving father, grandfather, and great-grandfather. Many considered him not only a relative but also a second father due to the care and support he provided throughout their lives. His keen sense of humor brought joy to those around him. In addition to his professional accomplishments and family life, Bruce actively pursued hobbies that brought him immense happiness. He enjoyed cheering on the Kansas City Chiefs and Royals. Furthermore, he found great joy in attending sporting events and school activities of not only his own children, but also his grandchildren. As a man of faith, Bruce's proudest accomplishments revolved around his involvement in the New Hope Community of Christ. He served as an elder, and was a pastor there for four years, offering guidance and spiritual support to his fellow church members. Bruce was also an active member of the church choir and played a pivotal role in youth ministry, as well as teaching Sunday School. He is survived by his loving wife Shirley Phelps, who stood by his side throughout their journey together. Their union blessed them with two children: Becky (Eddie) White and David (Terri) Phelps. Bruce's grandchildren, Ben (Alicia) White, Jonny White, Mitchell White, Andy (Caroline) Phelps, Rachel Phelps, and Brandon Green, and great-grandchildren, J.D. White and Teddy Phelps brought immeasurable joy to his life. Additionally, there is great anticipation for another great-granddaughter on the way. Bruce is also survived by his brothers, Ray Phelps and Pat Phelps, and sister, Darlene Braun. Bruce was preceded in passing by his parents, Otis and Eleanor Phelps, as well as his brothers Vernon Phelps, Dennis Phelps, Rick Phelps, Roger Phelps, and Leslie Phelps. Although his passing leaves a void in the hearts of all who knew him, his memory will forever be cherished. A memorial service will be held to honor Bruce’s life at 2:00 PM on Saturday, December 9, 2023, at New Hope Community of Christ located at 220 W. Moore, Independence, Missouri 64050. Bruce Silas Phelps lived a life guided by compassion and dedication to others. His impact on the lives of students as a guidance counselor and member of his faith community as an elder and pastor will be remembered for generations to come. His family will forever cherish the memories they shared with him, remembering him as not only a beloved family member but also a pillar of strength and wisdom. May he rest in eternal peace and may his legacy serve as an inspiration to all who knew him. |

LIVING IN THE KINGDOM OF GOD DECEMBER 7, 2023
Greetings of joy and good will to all the Saints around the world,
As most of you know, Doctrine and Covenants section 6, 10, 11, and 12 have similar statements, as follows from SECTION 12:1a A great and marvelous work is about to come forth unto the children of men. 1b Behold, I am God; and give heed to my word, which is quick and powerful, sharper than a two-edged sword, to the dividing asunder of both joints and marrow; 1c therefore, give heed unto my word.
12:2a Behold, the field is white, already to harvest; therefore, whoso desireth to reap, let him thrust in his sickle with his might and reap while the day lasts, that he may treasure up for his soul everlasting salvation in the kingdom of God. 2b Yea, whosoever will thrust in his sickle and reap, the same is called of God; therefore, if you will ask of me, you shall receive; if you will knock, it shall be opened unto you.
12:3a Seek to bring forth and establish my Zion. 3b Keep my commandments in all things; and if you keep my commandments and endure to the end, you shall have eternal life, which gift is the greatest of all the gifts of God.
The underlined portions remind us that we are to be actively and anxiously engaged in building up the Kingdom of God and establishing His righteousness. Why? The line in bold print says so we may have everlasting salvation in the kingdom of God.
Each time we observe the “Sacrament of the Lord’s Supper” we make a commitment to God that we will “SECTION 17:22d “eat in remembrance of the body of thy Son and witness unto thee, O God, the eternal Father, that they are willing to take upon them the name of thy Son, and always remember him, and keep his commandments which he has given them, that they may always have his Spirit to be with them. Amen.”
This is how we are to function as we are now living in the Kingdom of God. How are you, we, doing since last Sunday? Are we like the Innkeeper in Bethlehem and have no time, space, or place in our lives for the One who came to save us from being alienated from God? Are we often to busy with ourselves and our needs that we fail to be a CHRIST KEEPER?
A sign reads, “Jesus is the Reason for the Season.” I like to add, “Jesus is the only reason for every season.” A beautiful hymn about Jesus coming to earth is called, “Down From His Glory.”
Down from His glory, Ever living story,
My God and Savior came, And Jesus was His Name;
Born in a manger, To His own a stranger,
A Man of sorrows, tears and agony.
My God and Savior came, And Jesus was His Name;
Born in a manger, To His own a stranger,
A Man of sorrows, tears and agony.
What condescension, Bringing us redemption;
That in the dead of night, Not one faint hope in sight,
God, gracious, tender, Laid aside His splendor,
Stooping to love, to win, to save my soul.
Without reluctance, Flesh and blood His substance,
He took the form of man, Revealed the hidden plan,
Oh, glorious mystery, Sacrifice of Calvary,
And now I know Thou art the great “I Am.”
O how I love Him, How I adore Him, My breath, my sunshine, my all in all
The great Creator, Became my Savior, And all God’s fullness Dwelleth in HIM.
God bless you as you keep Him in your life and serve Him as He has asked in order that we might help others see Him and His Kingdom in us.
Paul Gage
