Herbert R Hawley Jr June 16, 1925 — February 10, 2025 Independence It is with an equal measure of sorrow and gratitude that the family of Herbert R Hawley, Jr. announce his departure from this earthly life on to eternal life with his Lord and Savior. Herb passed peacefully at home in Independence, Missouri on Monday, February 10, 2025. During the last weeks of his life, all of his children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren, along with many neighbors and church friends had the opportunity to visit and reminisce with him—sharing songs, scriptures, stories of his life and joys that awaited him. Even as strength faded he was strong in his testimony of Christ, and his eagerness to be with family and friends again. Herb was born June 16, 1925, to Herbert and Mildred Hawley, in Garibaldi, Oregon, a small mill town overlooking the Pacific Ocean. His family later moved to Tillamook, Oregon where his brother Harold, and sisters Luella and Emily were born. As a young teenager, he was baptized and confirmed into the Reorganized Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. For the rest of his life, he would mark this as a sacred moment, committing his life to Jesus Christ. In the summer of 1943, just after turning 18, and before his senior year of high school, he was drafted by the Army and began training with the 83rd Infantry, 329th Regiment. It was his first time away from home, riding a train, flying in an airplane, and being on the sea. Excitement, fear, death, and prayer filled his days for the next two years. He was called “Preach” by his comrades…a name he was proud to claim. He was always eager to tell how he was miraculously spared from harm numerous times even as he fought in five major campaigns…the Battle of Normandy, Northern France, the Rhineland, the Ardennes and Central Europe. He witnessed the horror of concentration camps in Dachau, and helped many displaced persons in France and Belgium. Before turning 21, he had known the best of life and seen the worst of what men could do. Shortly after returning home he met his lifelong companion, Luella Slover, They were married on June 23,1946. They built a 22x22 pumice block home on one acre of timbered land on the outskirts of Woodburn, Oregon. Over time the home and property expanded. They grew strawberries and blackberries to sell to local commercial canaries, and raised three children…Barbara, Gary and Susan. During much of the time Herb worked for a local hardware store, selling and repairing appliances and heating systems, and later at a local lumberyard learning from a master carpenter; honing skills that made it possible to help many families through the years. He also became very active in the church, and was ordained to the office of Priest, and a few years later to the office of Elder. He and the family were well known and loved by members all around the Pacific Northwest as he served in lay roles as a minister, administrator, camp director, and pastor. In the years between 1953 and 1963 Herb and Luella balanced church responsibilities, full and part time employment, the farm, and Herb’s college education. Two years spent at Graceland College in Lamoni, Iowa are often described as pivotal in his lifelong pursuit of knowledge. Friendship and respect for his favorite instructors, Roy Cheville and Jerry Runkle forever shaped him and his ministry. He earned his A.A. Degree and returned again eight years later to work toward his B.A…each time bringing his growing family along. He received his Education degree from Mount Angel Abby, in Mt. Angel, Oregon and his dream of being a teacher came true. He taught 5th and 6th grade at Woodburn Middle School for seven years before taking a position as a special education teacher. He then taught remedial reading for several more years. He loved working with his students and challenging them to seize life. In 1979, Herb left teaching, feeling a call to move to Independence, Missouri. His children with their young families soon followed. He and Luella both took jobs at the Auditorium where he was the Auditorium carpenter and she was a secretary for the worship office. Building cabinetry and refinishing desks, and pianos was his specialty. Here he met many of the ministers whose books he had studied and friendships grew. In 1989 he retired again. In 1988 Herb and Luella joined the South Chrysler Restoration Branch of the Church of Jesus Christ and became active in ministries there. In 1998 Luella suffered a debilitating double aneurism and they moved from their home to their daughter’s…Susan and Ralph, Jeff and Chris Nunn. The loving care here allowed them to age gracefully surrounded by family. What was thought would be a short term arrangement became 27 years. After Luella passed in 2019, life slowed. Still, he remained interested in the comings and goings of his friends, children and grandchildren. With Susan’s help every birthday and holiday was remembered with cards and personal notes. Every new achievement and young life was celebrated. Each visit afforded time to share a testimony of God's love. Technology brought church to him each week, and DVDs with sermons and song filled his alone time. Memories of people who had blessed his life remained fresh and stories were recounted; even until his last few days. His Bible was read again and again…always open near his chair. Needless to say, Dad and Grandpa will be greatly missed by his children, Barbara Garwood; Gary Hawley and wife, Donna; Susan Nunn and husband Ralph; 7 grandchildren…Carrie, Julie, Jennifer, Jared, Jacob, Jeffrey, and Christopher, 16 great-grandchildren, 10 great-great grandchildren, and more friends than we can count. For 99 years he has always been with us. But none of us would deny him this wonderful new journey. He had prepared himself, and filled his time on Earth with goodness and love. LIVING IN THE KINGDOM OF GOD FEBRUARY 13, 2025

 

Greetings Dear Saints,

 

May the LOVE of God be upon each you every second of your daily living in His Kingdom. A song states, “It’s love, it’s love, it’s love that makes the world go round.”How true because God is Love and He so loved the world, which includes everything about creation and not just the earth. God gave of Himself to and for us because of His love.

 

As we observe “Valentine’s Day,” we will hear tremendous references to love. You can research love and Valentine’s Day on the internet and discover multiple references, definitions, “stories” and whatever else you want to find out. As you may know, there are various levels of love, but the highest level and the only one deserving of all our heart, mind, might, and strength is GOD’S LOVE. In the Greek it is called “Agape” meaning the type of love that is God’s.

 

So, God is love, and God so loved the world that He gave of Himself, His Only Begotten Son, our Savior, Jesus Christ. There are numerous scriptures that refer to what is known as “The Great Commandment.” What is that commandment? Don’t forget the second one. However, sometimes we may hear something so much that we “turn it off.” What God has asked us to do is to so incorporate the Great commandment into our hearts, minds, body, spirit, soul that despite the efforts of the adversary, we will never forget or turn away from His love.

 

In Matthew when Jesus was asked what the great commandment was, he said that all the laws and commandments hang on these two, love God with all and your neighbor as yourself. In Mark, in a similar session, Jesus told the young man, who had said that to obey the two great commandments is more than all the burnt offerings and sacrifices, “You are not far from the kingdom.” In Luke we get the parable of the “Good Samaritan” with the understanding of who our neighbor is. These great commandments are also brought to our attention in the Old Testament, Book of Mormon and Doctrine and Covenants.

 

It is said that the first mention of love in the Bible is Genesis 22:2 where God spoke to Abraham and said, “Take now thy son, thine only Isaac, whom thou lovest…” God was directing Abraham to take Isaac and offer him for a sacrifice. Notice, God did not say “Thine only son” but, “Thine only Isaac.” God knew what it meant and would mean to “Give His Only Begotten Son.”

 

So, if God gave His best, even Himself for each of His creation, we should not wonder then that the Greatest Commandment is to Love God with all we have, are, or ever hope to be. As humans, we usually try to reciprocate when it comes to giving gifts, even valentines. That is to give, at least of equal value, but more importantly, above and beyond. Of course, we can never “Out give God.” He does not expects us to. He just asks that we love Him as He loves us.

 

But words, as important as they might be, are not enough. Our expressions of gratitude must be carried out in the lives we live, in the way we respond to His giving us our daily bread. We are called to live so His will and Kingdom may come on earth as it is is heaven. GOD LOVES YOU!

The Independence Heartland group is privileged to have Anthony George speak at our February meeting on “A Great and Marvelous Change- The Forces of Geomorphism in the Ohio Valley. ”For those who have heard Anthony’s presentations before on the Ohio Hopewell Mounds in the past, you know him to be an enthusiast of the land and its ancient cultures. He brings an exciting perspective on the history of the mound builder culture, which aligns with what we know about the Nephites in the Book of Mormon. CRE Conference 2025

 

CRE Conference 2025

Good evening brothers and sisters,

 

The Conference for the CRE will begin Sunday, March 23^rd and go through Friday, March 28^th and will be held at Waldo Restoration Branch (819 West Waldo Ave., Independence, MO. 64059).  The theme for this year’s conference is “New Wine in New Bottles” and I am very excited with how God has given us direction in the planning for the conference.  I felt very directed by the Spirit in creating the daily themes for all of us to focus on and I want to share them with you now.

 

Sun., 3/23:  New Wine in New Bottles (Matthew 9:21-23)

Mon., 3/24:  Being One with Jesus Christ (Mosiah 11:186)

Tues., 3/25:  Willing to Make Changes to Come Into God’s Presence (Alma 3:25 & 48)

Wed., 3/26:  Willing to Make Changes to Come Into God’s Presence (Alma 3:50-55)

Thur., 3/27:  Coming Together and Asking God for Direction (Mosiah 11:188)

Fri., 3/28:  Do As He Directs (Numbers 15:38-40)

 

In my preparation the Lord made it clear to me that it was not going to be sufficient for just the elders or even priesthood to focus on these items and come into His presence.  ALL of our people AND our families need to participate in this process, so, we are trying to involve as many people as possible.  Voting in the business sessions will be limited to the elders but all can observe.  The members, Aaronic priesthood and youth are all encouraged to come and participate in quorum sessions and discussions as well as classes and worship.  We really want to encourage you to register early so that we can prepare enough conference books, as well as calculate for meal planning.  There really isn’t a registration fee, however we would request $15 to cover the cost of the books and printed materials.  To register, you can go to http://www.eldersconference.org/cre2925.  From there, click on the link in the upper right corner that says, “Conference 2025”.

 

It is the desire of the Coordinating Council to complete the business needs early in the week so that we can focus on seeking God’s direction for us in our current state.

 

There are times that God asks us to do something that we consider a sacrifice.  After our experience in Kirtland last September, I feel this may be one of those times that we need to do whatever it takes to come together as a body.  I believe God is calling us to come together this week.

 

Just to remind you, 2-1/2 years ago in the message that was given to the priesthood in Kirtland, the parable of the 10 virgins was referenced and so let us not be part of the foolish that did not prepare in advance.  Let us prepare so that when the call is made, we are ready.

 

So please do not wait until that week of conference to prepare, let us join together and prepare now through prayer, fasting and study.  As we get closer to the conference date, there will be a zoom link available on the CRE website if you absolutely cannot join us in person.

 

May God bless each of us as we prepare to come into his presence.
