Woodrow (Woody) Howell Obituary

Woodrow T. Howell
August 6, 1952 – December 16, 2025

Son of Jack Lightner Howell and Anna Louise (Payne) Howell, Woody was born in Independence Missouri. He is survived by his wife Marsha Howell and son Paul E Howell (June Ann) and granddaughter Anna Sue Alice Howell, his true love of life.

He is also survived by his sisters, Marilyn D. Danko and Jacquelyn (Jackie) Howell and nephews Robbie Chester (Leslie), and James (Casey) Chester (Sarah) and great nephews Michael, Gabriel, Elijah. Many cousins and also his ex-wife, Margie Sloan, who remains a great friend.

Woody attended Bryant Elementary, William Chrisman Jr High and graduated in 1970 from William Chrisman High School.

Woody was in the United States Air Force from 1971-1975 where he was an immunization tech and record keeper. He had been selected for Vietnam but in a helicopter training course he was injured and therefore did not go to Vietnam, Praise God.

At a young age Woody worked next to his father in the floor laying business, Burton Howell, Inc. After the Air Force Woody bought the business from his parents and remained in Independence. After years of not attending church regularly, in 1991 he joined the Restoration Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints where God taught him and led him to a life of ministry. He remains an inspiration and a brother to many.

Earlier years Woody owned a semi professional baseball team. At a very young age Paul was the teams bat boy. Like his Dad, Paul grew up to love baseball, fishing and golf. Woody supported Paul’s athletic endeavors through high school being a member of the Richmond MO All Sports Club. Everything from cooking to running the football chains and putting on team dinners. The best was time spent on the water together.

Starting in 2018 he began working with Team Jesus engaging in street ministry in feeding and clothing the homeless whom we refer to as the Beloved. Woody went on many missionary trips with Team Jesus. His greatest love was going to Duck Valley Reservation in Owyhee NV. He had been going there over 25 years and found himself a loving family and home there. He loved it! He was able to witness graduations, births but most importantly a change in lives by God’s grace.
With Team Jesus and God’s Love Ministries the hope remains to open a women’s and children’s shelter in the Unity Center. That building had been our church headquarter location for many years before it was offered for this current ministry.

Woody was Independence City Councilman from 1984-1988 He was instrumental in many projects and improvements for his district. He was forefront in founding Hope House Shelter for Battered Women and Children, utilizing his flooring warehouse as a receiving point for supplies.
He was a member of The American Legion Post 21.

Served on the board of directors Girl’s and Boy’s Club. Charter member of Noland Road Lion’s Club where he served as president for the first 5 years.

Woody was a fisherman! Absolutely loved being in a boat on a great lake and fishing sunrise to sunset, and often later. He purchased a 1979 Champion Bass boat and fished many tournaments. In fact, he and Margie were members of the Midwest Husband and Wife Bass Fishing Club where they traveled to many lakes.

In 1995 Woody opened Adams and Howell Floor Covering in Richmond, MO bought a home and moved there with Marsha and Paul. All the meanwhile traveling to Independence MO weekly for church business and worship. He was in business there many years. He sold their home in 2024 and the cabin became home with many trips back to Independence for church. And the cabin offered the lake and the lake offered fishing! He was home! And today he is at home in the Kingdom of God in continuation of our Father’s will.
