Norma Christine Fugate - Obituary

 

Norma Christine Fugate October 9, 1936 — June 30, 2024 Blue Springs Norma Christine (Bonsteel) Fugate, second child to Jim and Elna (Anholm) Bonsteel, devoted wife, mother, grandmother and great grandmother, died peacefully June 30, 2024 at the age of 87. She was born 10/9/36 in San Luis Obispo, CA, moved to Fresno at age 9 and remained there for many years. Norma met future husband Ed Fugate, through his younger sister, her high school friend Grace Fugate (now Andrews). Ed and Norma were married on September 16, 1956, and were married almost 62 years when Ed passed away in 2018. Norma was a convert to the Community of Christ (then RLDS) in her late teens when that same high school friend Grace Fugate (now Andrews) invited her to a youth party. Norma was a committed, but unassuming disciple her whole life. She never sought out the spot light, but always wanted to serve. She had many responsibilities through the years, including women's leader, skylark leader, Sunday school class teacher, pianist/organist, choir member, youth camp director, congregational financial officer, pastor, and on and on. Norma was a devoted wife, accompanying Ed to many places in Calif for his career - Fresno, Angels Camp, Quincy, Taft, Lake Isabella, Bakersfield. She was an accomplished bookkeeper and office worker, always finding a job wherever they moved. Eventually they moved to Blue Springs MO in 2009 to be nearer their daughter in their retirement years. Ed and Norma had four children - Ed Fugate Jr (Fatima Gomez), Sandi Boyd (John), Stephen Fugate (Nancy), Rich Fugate (Kristina); nine grandchildren - Curtis Fugate (Jessie), Samantha Maple (Reece), Sarah Boyd, Jenna Boyd, Penelope Gomez-Fugate, Korina Gomez-Fugate, Kristy Gomez-Fugate, Dylan Fugate and Taylor Fugate. Two great grandchildren - Eveyln Fugate and Bailey Maple. She was preceded in death by her parents Jim and Elna Bonsteel, husband Ed Fugate, sister Elaine Tote. Norma was a caring and loving mom, grandma, and great grandma. Family and serving God were always at the top of her priorities. She loved to crochet, knit, cross stitch, needlework, research and document family history, play the piano, and dabble in painting; she was adventurous, loving the outdoors, especially mountains and redwoods, specifically Dinky Creek, California and "Happy Valley" in Santa Cruz California. She loved puzzles of all kinds, sudoko, family games, etc. The family suggests that memorial contributions be made to Community of Christ, Novus Hospice, or the charity of your choice.

Howard L. Cook - Obituary

 

Howard L. Cook October 20, 1933 — July 2, 2024 Howard L. Cook, age 90, passed away on July 2, 2024, surrounded by the love of his family. He was born on October 20, 1933, in Lamar, Missouri, to Daina Austin Cook and Helen (Jarvis) (Cook) Holt. Howard graduated from William Chrisman High School in the class of 1951 and served with honor in the Missouri National Guard for 10 years. He married Edith L. McKinney on October 8, 1955, and they had two daughters, Linda and Karen. Howard worked for the Gas Service Company for 35 years. In retirement, he worked as a driver for Elderhostel and for the Graceland College nursing program, as well as staying active in volunteer service such as delivering meals on wheels, driving friends and family to appointments, and organizing recycling efforts among his fellow residents at Heritage House. He was a member of the RLDS Church, and later of the South Crysler Restoration Branch of the Church of Jesus Christ. He treasured his calling as a deacon and tirelessly served the congregation in that capacity. Howard was also very active in advocacy for the handicapped, participating in efforts in the 1960’s and 70’s that led to the establishment of a school for the severely handicapped in Jackson County, as well as group homes and the sheltered workshop. He was devoted to his handicapped daughter, Linda, and helped her to participate in events such as the Special Olympics, bowling, and fishing, along with many other activities. Howard was dedicated to his family. He supported his wife, Edith, in being a homemaker and being active in church activities and service projects and was involved in many of Karen’s activities at school and church as she was growing up. Howard is survived by his wife, Edith, daughters Linda Cook and Karen Thomas, grandchildren Alex Thomas and Kelsey Thomas, his sister Sarah McNardy, and many cousins, nieces, and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, Daina Cook and Helen Holt, his brother Robert Cook and nephew Daniel Cook, and other cousins, nieces, and nephews.

LIVING IN THE KINGDOM OF GOD JULY 11, 2024

 

Greetings to all the dear Saints around God’s kingdom on earth,

 

Remembering that the phrases, “The kingdom of God and the kingdom of heaven” are held to mean the same thing, what does the phrase, “The kingdom of heaven is at hand” mean to you?

 

In reading the daily devotional for July 10, 2024, Helaman 2:96 caught my attention with these words, “Repent ye, repent ye, for the kingdom of heaven is at hand…” This is listed as being about 30 B.C. This is identical to the words of John the Baptist in Matthew 3:28 and the words of Jesus Christ in Matthew 4:16. There are interesting correlations also in Doctrine and Covenants 6:2 a and 5 e. as well as Genesis 6:59.

 

A person responded to my letter last week with this question, “Is it not past time to be more boldly specific and detailed about the "commandments" we all are not keeping?” Who can and has been more specific in what is required of us, more diligent in reminding us of our duties, more strait forward and clear as to what He expects of us, and still showers us with His love and blessings, in spite of our not doing His will than GOD?

 

God, from the beginning to the present time has spoken of His Kingdom and what is required of those who would be part of that Kingdom. Repentance, obedience to His commandments, and being actively involved in activities that build up the kingdom and establish His righteousness seem to be some of the main requirements for entrance to God’s Kingdom.

 

We are told to preach nothing but repentance. Did you notice in Genesis 6:59 what it says about repentance? Why were those the first words from John the Baptist and Jesus? Why did Moroni leave us with his final words in chapter 10:27-30? Why were we admonished in 1976 in Doctrine and Covenants 152, as it reads, whether you accept a message through W. Wallace Smith or not? What if we had heeded that counsel then?

 

Jesus, of course, is the greatest Teacher of all because He is the One who gave the law and commandments. He is the one who gave us the “Keys to the Kingdom,” in the Sermon on the Mount.

Compare the Inspired Version in Matthew chapters four and five with the King James. Especially note Matthew chapter five verses 1-4. Go over the Blesseds (Beatitudes) and rate yourself on each one.

Are you poor in spirit, have you come unto Christ, do you mourn for your sins, are you meek, do you hunger and thirst after righteousness, are you merciful, are you a peacemaker, have you been persecuted for HIS NAME’S SAKE? Read the promise for compliance with each of these keys.

 

No person has or ever can make the Way any clearer than God has done. Go back if you want to the two greatest commandments How much do we truly love God? Do we really love our neighbor as our selves? Do we forgive others as we expect God to forgive us? Read Matthew 6:9-16. Rather than having someone bold enough to tell us, perhaps we need to be honest enough with ourselves to really respond to God’s Word.

Zionworks News for June 27th, 2024 THE KINGDOM ON EARTH IN SERIOUS OPERATION At this moment several volunteers are working and have been working to help a man, Ray, relocate his belongings and equipment after his home burned. This has been a huge job over the last months. These volunteers simply showed up and stayed on the job because it was in their hearts to help and Ray was in real need. No official leadership was necessary. This kind of love and willingness typifies those individuals that are dedicated to Christ and have his love in their souls. There is joy in seeing these kinds of quiet manifestations of the Kingdom, while contempt for virtue is being shouted and acted out all around us. There is a fulfilling of the soul when these kinds of people, no matter who they are and where they are, can encounter each other and be at ease among each other, knowing that there is no guile or secular threat in the pure love of Christ. These types of people, too busy to be distracted by prejudice and fear (rather than taught prejudice and distrust by religiosity and negative noise) will be, AND ARE, the types of people simply engaged in making Christ’s kingdom on earth a living reality. They dedicate their hopes, their dreams, and their specialized skills and gifts cooperatively to establish a thriving community, reliably based on Godly principles (and overdue to be established by those that claim to be His).

It works out very well since so much people power has already been spent on Ray’s needs. NEXT MEETING: Let’s get our heads together on this. Some of us might be out of town on Sunday, July 7th, Independence Day weekend. Please email me if you’re not going to be able to be at the meeting on the 7th, so we can re-schedule and get the meeting notice out in the newsletter by July 1st in the afternoon. At the next meeting, whether it will be on July 7th or later, there is some serious agenda to tend to regarding specialized skills and gifts to be coordinated, and the needs to be met to see to thrival of the Kingdom. Please join in this vital effort. We hope to hear, at the meeting, from an individual who has made The Kingdom On Earth his life’s work and has much knowledge and practical experience, from architecture, to infrastructure, to city planning, to human nature to tell about.
