Luella Claire Hawley peacefully passed away with her family close beside her on May 16, 2019 at her daughter's home in Independence, Missouri. Luella and her husband, Herb, lived with Ralph and Susan Nunn for 21 years. She lived to be 93 years old.

Luella was born August 11, 1925 in Pleasanton, Iowa to Jesse Carl and Verda May (Polly) Slover. Her family moved from Colorado to Oregon when she was a young girl. Luella graduated from high school at age 16 in Scio, Oregon.

Luella was a member of the Reorganized Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. She married Herbert R. Hawley Jr. on June 23, 1946 in Woodburn, Oregon.

In Woodburn, Luella worked for a local medical doctor. She was his assistant, receptionist, and bookkeeper. She was also a teacher's assistant and library aid for nine years at the Woodburn Middle School.

Luella taught many young children at weekly worship services in Woodburn. She loved the outdoors and spent many hours working in her vegetable and flower garden. In the summer time, for several years she helped harvest two acres of strawberries that were sold to the cannery located in town.

She made her home a place of beauty and welcomed those who were in need. She was deeply concerned for the welfare of others. She taught her children the Restored Gospel, to love the Lord Jesus, and to be lovingly obedient to His eternal truths.

After moving to Independence in 1979, Luella accepted the responsibility as the secretary in the Worship Office at the RLDS Auditorium in Independence for seven years.

Luella was preceded in death by her parents, infant daughter, Jennifer and eleven siblings.

She will be missed by her husband of 72 years and three children and their spouses: Barbara (Jim) Garwood, Gary (Donna) Hawley and Susan (Ralph) Nunn. She leaves behind seven grandchildren; Carrie (Don) Welch, Julie (Matt) Heide, Jennifer (Jeff) Cool, Jared (Melinda) Hawley, Jacob (Jennifer) Hawley, Jeff (Rebecca) Nunn, and Chris Nunn. Fourteen great grandchildren; Jayne Welch, Samantha Welch, Katherine (Jeff) Johns, Emily Cool, Rebekah Cool, Peter Cool, Seth Cool, Mitchell Heide, Griffin Heide, Marin Heide, Brandon Hawley, Phillip Hawley, Alex Nunn, AnnaBell Hawley. Two great great grandchildren; Hazel Johns and Jace Johns. She also leaves behind four sister-in-laws, Margie Slover, Luella Hawley Sedlak, Judith Hawley and Georgia Slover. In addition, she will be missed by several nieces and nephews.

She longed for the day of Zion on earth again, when all God's Saints will be together and be with Christ on earth for a thousand years. Her faith in the Restored Gospel and it's teachings toward the whole world were uppermost in her mind. Her memory will be in the hearts of all who knew her and loved her as she was a beacon of light to the true worship and glory of our Heavenly Father.

The family wishes to send a special thank you to the staff of the Independence Crossroads Hospice for the outstanding care and comfort that Luella received.
