Prayers For Severely Injured Friend

 Prayers For Severely Injured Friend

Last week Mike R., a friend from Blue Springs, was severely injured in an off road accident. He is in his 50's, married and works at a auto body repair shop. He suffered 3rd degree burns on both legs and 2nd degree burns on his torso. Both legs were amputated at the knee. Prayers are requested for healing and pain management. I don't know what church he attends but he has asked for prayers.

New Resource! Restoration Scriptures 101

IMG 20230928 163531 232 2

This new resource will help everyone--young and older--in a group or family to become better students of the Scriptures. Obviously, Restoration Scriptures 101 is a beginning level study. But we all have to start somewhere!

This is a 40-page booklet which has four parts:

• Learning what our Scriptures are and how we got them. This is background information and will not be tested.
• Learning the order of the books. You need to prove you can say the names of the books in the Book of Mormon and the Bible in the correct order.
• Learning to retell Bible stories and Book of Mormon stories. You need to prove you can repeat main ideas.
• Learning and reciting verses from the Bible, Book of Mormon, and Doctrine and Covenants. Prove you can do it.

Each person accepting the challenges in Restoration Scriptures 101 will select one of more adult examiners, who will initial and date a challenge when you prove you can do it. You might choose a parent, grandparent, husband, wife, priesthood member, or friend as your examiner. The examiner should be someone who wants to help you but won't just give you the answers.

Restoration Scriptures 101 has three skill levels:

LEVEL 1:
• Say the names of the 15 Book of Mormon books in order.
• Tell 10 stories from each section--Old Testament, New Testament, and Book of Mormon--a total of 30 stories.
• Recite 15 verses from each section--Old Testament, New Testament, Book of Mormon, and Doctrine and Covenants--a total of 60 verses.

LEVEL 2:
• Say the names of the 27 New Testament books in order.
• Tell 5 more stories from each section--Old Testament, New Testament, and Book of Mormon--for a total of 45 stories.
• Recite 5 more verses from each section--Old Testament, New Testament, Book of Mormon, and Doctrine and Covenants--for a total of 80 verses.

LEVEL 3:
• Say the names of the 38 Old Testament books in order.
• Tell 5 more stories from each section--Old Testament, New Testament, and Book of Mormon--for a total of 60 stories.
• Recite 5 more verses from each section--Old Testament, New Testament, Book of Mormon, and Doctrine and Covenants--for a total of 100 verses.

The stories and the verses to learn are contained in the booklet along with their references.

Each booklet comes with bright gold stars to stick on the cover each time you complete ALL the requirements for a skill level.

The cost of each booklet is $3.50. The purchase of 10 booklets at one time will give you a 10% discount on your order. The purchase of 20 booklets at one time will give you a 20% discount on your order. Think of all the people you know--young, older, and in between--who can benefit from Restoration Scriptures 101!

DISRUPTION

Unexpectedly, we had an unusual yet potentially uncomfortable occasion at our last meeting that challenged our beliefs in the scriptures, how we look at them and how we search for truth. Those challenges are always good for us because we always want to KNOW truth, GROW in the truth and respond to God in ways that will please him, set a Godly example and further the reputation and growth of the Kingdom. Because we are not bound by the precepts of men (or try not to be), we are in the position to be able to obey God on his terms. This is so important. We must act and believe on His scripture and His direction or get out of his way. In our prayers and in our scripture searches these past four days, God has reinforced, in each of us, the truths of the Gospel and has helped us grow closer to him in the process. He has also helped us in our personal discernment of love and truth and in the desire to know and love him more. We have, I trust, found each day more awesome and worshipful while we yield ourselves to him.

In this yielding ourselves to God, and of course to Jesus, we experience this seeming paradox, that while overwhelmed by the awesomeness of creation, our self-awareness and self-importance vanishes, and our love for God, his gospel and for people grows. We are reminded that we must not, especially the priesthood among us, call attention to ourselves or to try to promote ourselves as superiors. We are servants, assigned to uphold and enable others so they can find and fully exercise their God-given identities, purposes and expression. We are NEVER, NEVER someone’s superior in intellect, prestige or spiritual status. To pretend such is a self-deception, at best; leaving us nakedly exposed as pretenders. In Isaiah 50:8, this behavior is illuminated thus: “Behold all ye that kindleth fire, that compass yourselves about with sparks, walk in the light of your fire, and in the sparks which ye have kindled; this shall ye have of my hand, ye shall lie down in sorrow.” This is not a place to flaunt credentials or priesthood “status”.

As Christians, commissioned with the responsibility to build and exemplify the “kingdom of love and light”, let us happily and expectantly work together in that love and light. I think this is the most exciting thing that can happen to us.

REPORT

At our last meeting, we were coached by Laura Cozart on means and guidelines for providing articles to be published in Zionworks’ web site. These guidelines include: keep it brief and succinct; supply links and resources, since there is so much good info already out there; use “what, why, who, when, how”; and to encourage the readers/viewers to do further research and to experiment with and apply the information. Laura has an example article you can contact her for.

James Lewis "Jim" Rogers Obituary

James Lewis "Jim" Rogers Obituary

July 7, 1929 — September 19, 2023
Lee's Summit, Missouri
James Lewis Rogers (Jim), a resident of Independence, MO, passed away peacefully Tuesday, September 19th, at Centerpoint Medical Center. He was born July 7, 1932, to John Sharp and Eula C Rogers in Sylvarena, MS, where he was raised with two brothers and enjoyed country life in a small town. Jim attended the University of Mississippi and came back to Sylvarena to marry his childhood sweetheart, LeDonne Yelverton, riding his horse, Billy, to her home for courtship and marriage proposal. Jim worked as a boiler maker for a few years but began his career as a petroleum landman in 1957 until he retired at the age of 57.

Jim was converted to the RLDS church at a church reunion and baptized later that same year. He served in many capacities in the church including multiple pastorships and Louisiana-Mississippi District President but heeded the call to gather into the center place in 1987, where he built a home and family farm in Eastern Jackson County. While living in Independence, Jim was pastor during the building of the Buckner Restoration Branch, Center Place Restoration School developer and board member, High Priest, Apostle, & Patriarch. Jim had a special fondness of being partnered together with Patriarch Bill Davies on multiple ministry opportunities and sharing the gospel with saints around the Midwest region.

In addition to his many church responsibilities, Jim was also instrumental in establishing Water District #16 in Eastern Jackson County.

Jim and LeDonne were the proud parents of 3 children: Michael Brian, Richard Lewis, & Mary Catherine; grandchildren: Rick, Micah, Rachel, Joseph, Philip, & Derek; and numerous great grandchildren. By whatever fond name he was called- Dad, Pop, Poppa Jim, Popster, Poppy- he loved his family deeply and was always ready to lend a helping hand whenever needed. Jim greatly loved and was beloved by his 2 daughters-in-law, Susan (deceased) and Michele.

Jim enjoyed fishing, hunting, boating, camping & gardening. He treasured many memorable gatherings both in Mississippi and here in Independence on the family farm, sharing food, fellowship and laughter, a tradition established by previous generations.

Jim was predeceased by his wife of 59 years, LeDonne (Independence, MO), his parents-Sharp and Eula Rogers (Sylvarena, MS), and brothers- Billy Charles Rogers (Andrews, TX), and John Hillman Rogers (Brandon, MS).
