Kirtland Temple
History Museum Management Internship

Every summer since the 1960s, college students from around the country have shared the story of the Kirtland Temple and the community that built the historic landmark. As an intern in the History Museum Management Course, students have the unique opportunity to see the Kirtland Temple from a behind-the-scenes view, learn the fascinating history of the religious community, as well as receive a rewarding experience that will highlight any resume.

Professional Experience

Our Kirtland Temple internships are designed as both an academic program and a museum internship. Each summer our interns participate in university-level courses on topics such as American religious history and museum education. Each course is accredited by Graceland University for up to six semester hours, and includes visiting guest lecturers, field trips to surrounding historic sites, and hands-on curatorial projects with the Kirtland Temple collection. Along with their academic experience, each intern gives tours of the historic landmark five days a week. Leading tours of the Temple gives students a professional experience in teaching, public speaking, and historical interpretation, as well as the opportunity to meet visitors from all over the world.

Quality of Life

Students who are qualified and chosen for the internship program will receive onsite housing and earn up to $3,900. The apartments, all within walking distance of the Temple, are furnished and range from one to three bedrooms. If accepted, you’ll likely have roommates. In addition to the Temple, Kirtland is home to several historic sites, one of the largest arboretums in the country, and three large county parks. Cleveland, only twenty-two miles to the west, offers visitors a variety of cultural, culinary, and recreational experiences. For those who enjoy traveling, Niagara Falls, Toronto, Pittsburgh, Philadelphia, New York City, Boston, and Washington, D.C. can all be reached by car in a day.

Admission

The Kirtland Temple will accept six interns each year. All inquiries and applications should be directed to:

Joseph Smith Historic Site
Nauvoo, Illinois
History Museum Management
Summer Internship

Explore and share the story of one of the 19th century’s most successful communitarian groups in Nauvoo, Illinois. Established in 1839, Nauvoo grew quickly and became one of the largest cities in the state by the mid-1840s. Before the decade was over, growing political, economic, and military might and the introduction of controversial religious practices would lead to the assassination of Joseph Smith, Jr. (the Community of Christ’s founder) and the break-up of the community. As an intern at the Joseph Smith Historic Site, you will have an opportunity to share the history of this National Historic Landmark District with thousands of visitors from around the world. Additionally, you will be introduced to the theory and practice of museum management as you assist in the day-to-day operations of the site.

Professional Experience

The internship at the Joseph Smith Historic Site is an academic program that includes classroom learning, a hands-on practicum in interpreting the site, and an introduction to selected aspects of museum management. The academic course work consists of an introduction to Latter Day Saint history with an emphasis on the Nauvoo period and related Jacksonian Era U.S. history. Students who successfully complete the course work can receive 6 semester hours of credit through Graceland University. The class includes field trips to other historic sites in the area and a project that relates to and is of value to the site.
These projects can be tailored to fit the educational emphasis of the student. In addition to history majors, the program is an especially good fit for education, business, and music majors. Education majors have the opportunity to develop museum education programs. Business students can assist in the development of museum store products and gain valuable retail management skills. Music students can research and perform 19th century music. Whatever the area of emphasis, the student will develop strong public speaking skills that will serve them well throughout their future careers.

Quality of Life

Nauvoo, Illinois is a small town located on a stunningly beautiful bend of the Mississippi River. Heavily dependent on tourism, Nauvoo offers busy days and quiet nights. Shopping and entertainment venues are located in nearby Keokuk, Iowa.

Application and Compensation

Applicants must have completed at least their senior year of high school. Interns earn $300 per week.

Housing and utilities are provided. All inquiries should be directed to:
