Carol Norris Vincent - Obituary

 

Carol Norris Vincent July 29, 1938 — June 22, 2024 Carol Norris Vincent passed away peacefully at Rosewood Health and Rehabilitation in Independence on Saturday, June 22, 2024. She has gone home to the Lord, ready to be greeted by friends, family, and loved ones who have gone before. Carol was born July 29, 1938, in Kansas City, Missouri, to Claude V. and Dorothy Nunemaker Norris. She is preceded in death by her parents; husband William Vincent; a son, Thomas Waddell who died in infancy, and step-son, Dean Vincent. Carol is survived by her children, Larry (Vera Solano) Waddell of Grand Marais, Minnesota; Michael Waddell, Bloomington, Indiana; Ramona Decorah (Jerry Hekker) of Traverse City, Michigan; and step-daughter Susan Vincent VanDyke of Indianapolis, Indiana. Carol is also survived by her dear siblings, Linda (David) Kohlman, Colorado Springs, Colorado; Larry (Sharon) Norris, Blue Springs, Missouri; Marjorie Darling, Oak Grove, Missouri; and James (Diane) Norris, Lee’s Summit, Missouri. She is also survived by five grandchildren and five step-grandchilden. Carol was married to Jack O. Waddell (d.) from 1959 until 1986. She was married to William Vincent in 1992 until his death in 2004. She is survived by her dear friend/companion during her final years, Rey Yzquierdo. Carol graduated from Lawrence High School (Kansas) in 1956 and received an Associate Of Arts degree from Graceland College in Lamoni, Iowa, in 1958. Carol was the Assistant Director of the Tippecanoe County Historical Association (Lafayette, Indiana) from 1972-1988. She was the Director of Development at the Indianapolis Zoo from 1988 until her retirement in 1995 when she moved to Sun City Center, Florida, before returning to her childhood home town of Independence in 2004 after the passing of her second husband. Carol served in a number or other capacities throughout her life: as a board member of the Lafayette Environmental Action Federation (1972-1976); Vice President, Midwest Museums Conference (1990-1993); President, Association of Indiana Museums (1990-1993); management consultant for the Association of Indiana Museums (1995-1997); founder and coordinator of the Post-Polio Syndrome Support Group of Southern Hillsborough County (2001-2004); as a Stephen Minister (2001-2004); and as an Elder in the Community Of Christ. Over her years as a professional and volunteer, Carol received numerous awards and certifications. She made several presentations at seminars and workshops about fundraising, museum administration, and publication. She served as a discussion leader in both Florida and Missouri for Christian education classes, and over the years was a prolific writer of historical and museum management publications as well as an avid writer and researcher of comprehensive family histories. A small private family memorial service will be held in Independence. It is requested that there are no flowers, but cards and letters of remembrance may be mailed to: Carol Vincent Family, 4012 W. Loretta "Maxine" Corder - Obituary

 

Loretta "Maxine" Corder September 15, 1929 — June 14, 2024 Independence Loretta Maxine (Arnold) Corder of Independence, Missouri, returned to her heavenly home on June 14, 2024. The Lord granted her 94 years of life. Maxine was born on September 15th, 1929 to Walter and Lula Arnold in Boliver, Missouri. Maxine met her husband David E. Myers at William Chrisman High School. They were married on July 27, 1946. Maxine and David were blessed with a daughter, Linda K. (Myers) Bishop, and a son, Steven D. Myers. Maxine worked evenings for Montgomery Wards in Kansas City when her children were younger. She then worked part-time for Bundschu's on the Independence Square. Maxine later worked for the IRS part-time during tax season. When her children were grown, she went to work full time and became a Manager for the IRS. Maxine and David were divorced in 1971, and while working for the IRS she met her second husband, Hubert D. Corder. They were married 41 years until his death in 2016. Maxine later went to work for Dr. Ladas as the receptionist at the Suchman and Ladas Dental Office. She worked there for many years until she retired. Maxine was a convert to the Reorganized Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, where she faithfully attended church every Sunday. She was a Women’s leader at the Englewood congregation, volunteered to sit in the nursery, and helped with many baby showers. At the time of her death, she was a dedicated member of the 39th Street R.L.D.S. congregation. Maxine loved to spend time with her family; both immediate and extended. She loved going to Pomme De Terre Lake in Wheatland, Missouri, where she had a lake house. During her many weekends there, she especially enjoyed boating, swimming, and fishing. Maxine loved to organize annual family reunions at Bennet Springs where she enjoyed reconnecting with family she didn’t get to see often. Maxine was an artistic person who loved quilting. She made beautiful wedding quilts for her children and grandchildren, as well as a variety of quilts of all colors, shapes, and sizes. She also sewed dresses and knitted beautiful blankets and baby booties. Maxine adored spending time with all of her grandchildren whether it was tea parties, games, cooking, swimming, watching movies, sleepovers, or just chatting. And when she wasn’t busy with her grandchildren, she could be found talking to someone, whether on the phone or in person. Maxine always kept her Lord and Savior, family and friends in her heart. And she always encouraged us to do the same. Her life was a reflection of Christ’s love, and she had a wonderful way of making everyone feel special whether they were family or not. Maxine was preceded in death by her husband Hubert D. Corder, her parents Walter and Lula Arnold, four brothers, Delbert Arnold, Leonard Arnold, Donald Arnold and Clarence Arnold as well as four sisters, Nell Hill, Mable Jackson, Grace Stark, and Gladys Tippet. Maxine is survived by her daughter Linda K. Bishop and husband Samuel, and her son Steven Myers and wife Susan; her seven grandchildren, Samuel D. Bishop, Angela Fears and husband Brian, Paul Bishop and wife Shawna, David Myers, Steve Myers and wife Rebecca, Trevor Myers, and Brady Myers and wife Lindsay, as well as twelve great grandchildren and three great-great grandchildren. She is also survived by many nieces and nephews. Maxine will be lovingly remembered and incredibly missed. A Celebration of Life will be held at Special Ministries congregation 1706 S. Northern Blvd., Independence, MO 64052 on Friday, June 28 at 4:00 p.m.

So, here we are half way through 2024.

What does the Lord have yet in store?

He has told us to shake off the coals or be wrecked on the shore.

So, dear Saints, what can He tell us more?

LET US SHAKE OFF THE COALS FROM OUR GARMENTS. ORIGIN OF THE HYMN THAT IS SUCH A GENERAL FAVORITE. BY W. W. BLAIR. (EDITOR's NOTE.-ln almost every prayer service the Saints sing the old hymn known by the title given above, or as "The pebble has dropped in the · water." Thousands of hearts have been touched by its spiritual fervor. Few perhaps to-day know how the hymn came to be written. The account of the incidents leading up to and surrounding its origin as given below is from the pen of W. W. Blair, as it appeared in the Saints' Herald, February 15, 1864.) BROTHER SHEEN: I must tell you something more of the good time we had last October, in visiting around with Brothers Joseph, Alexander, and David Smith, and Bro. William Davis. I think the incidents which I shall relate will be duly appreciated by the Saints. On Friday, October 16, I accompanied the brethren to Gallands Grove. We stopped at the house of Bro. Alexander McCord. That night Joseph had a remarkable night vision, which he told in the morning. He said: "I saw in my dream a woman, whom I was to receive into my charge, and under my watchcare and counsel, and she was almost wild, having been held captive a long season by barbarians, who had degraded and dishonored her. She was nearly naked. The clothes that were upon her were tattered and torn, and very filthy withal, and her whole appearance was that of extreme wretchedness. In her pitiable condition, she looked with distrust upon all around her, especially on me, apparently fearing lest I, too, would abuse and disgrace her. My heart was deeply moved with her deplorable condition. I ordered that she be washed, her hair combed, and that suitable apparel be given her, including clean underclothes. My request having been complied with, I now saw her again. But how changed, how entirely different from what I saw ~her last. Her garments now were of spotless purity, her eye beamed with joy and delight, her fears and misgivings were entirely banished, and she expressed her unbounded gratitude to me, as her friend and benefactor, while she clasped her arms around my neck, and imprinted upon my cheek a multitude of kisses, with all the tender affection of a mother." I said when I heard it, that the dream or vision was of the Lord, and that the woman was the church, her captors a corrupt ministry, her wild, ragged, dirty condition, represented her sinful, demoralized state, her distrust represents what is being said by many of the Saints in Europe and America, that is, that by and by Joseph will lead into the same corrupt doctrines and practices as Brigham Young, Strang, and others. The clothing in clean apparel, represents the redeeming of the Saints by righteousness, the balance is easily understood. How plain this points out Joseph's mission, and what will be done ....DAVID H. SMITH. who for the past ten days had · · been sorely afflicted with a sore throat, now began to feel like himself. He "tuned his pipes," and with his brethren, sang the songs of Zion, many of them his own composition, till we all forgot the sorrowful world without, and felt that paradise was well nigh regained, and we were made to rejoice in the blessedness of our heavenly prospects, and present joys. May the Lord minister many such happy seasons to his Saints. From here we went to Manti. In one of the evening prayer meetings Brother Joseph spoke in prophecy, relative to the work the Lord had lately begun in that place; immediately upon this David arose in the congregation, and in the Spirit of the Lord, sang the two first verses of the following beautiful hymn, which he afterward wrote down: Tune: "Fading 'Flowers." "Let us shake off the coals from our garments, And arise in the strength of the Lord; Let us break off the yoke of our bondage, And be free in the joy of the word; For the pebble hath dropped in the water, And the waves circle round with the shock; Shall we anchor our bark in the center, Or drift out and be wrecked on the rock? "Let us waken our songs in the morning, And let them at noontide resound; The evening will find us rejoicing, While the law in our hearts will be found; For the Lord is remembering Zion, And bringing her comfort once more; Shall we anchor our bark in the center, Or drift out and be wrecked on the shore. "Thank the Lord for the plan he hath given, That will render us pure as a child, That will turn this cold earth into heaven, With his Spirit so holy and mild; And the hope of a portion in Zion, Shall cheer us till trials are o'er; Let us anchor our barks in the center· And be safe from the rocks on the shore." The congregation seemed spellbound; as with eagerness they listened to catch the heaven-inspired song, as it fell from his lips in all its richness and power. Every soul was thrilled, and every heart melted under the sweet, peaceful influences of the Holy Spirit, which attended and bore witness to the word.

I’m sure we all love to sing this wonderful hymn, but it, like the scriptures must mean more and be more in our daily walk in the Kingdom, than just beautiful words. We are called to examine our own lives, even with the proverbial “fine toothed comb” to find and expel from our lives anything and everything that is not in accord with God’s will for us. Do you have even the least degree of any kind of ill will, malice, hatred, dislike, not wanting to be around someone for whatever feeling or such? If so you have a coal on your garment, in your heart and on your mind. To be One with Jesus, we simply must shake off all those coals and the many more that could be listred.

Make a list of the coals on your garment. Be totally honest with yourself. It is better for us to examine ourselves before being examined by the all seeing eyes of God. Anything we think, say, or do that is not in accord with God’s Word must be shaken off so that we might have a garment described in Revelation 19:8 “And to her was granted that she should be arrayed in fine linen, clean and white; for the fine linen is the righteousness of Saints.”

Hobart Warren Graeff - Obituary

 

Hobart Warren Graeff July 29, 1932 — May 4, 2024 Independence, Missouri Hobart Warren Graeff, 91, passed away on May 4, 2024. Visitation will be at 10:30 with the celebration of life service to follow at 11:00 a.m., Saturday, June 29th at Speaks Suburban Chapel in Independence. He was born in Osborn, MO to Albert Graeff and Gertrude Mix Graeff where he lived until he began serving his country in the U.S. Navy. He is survived by his brother, Ray Graeff of Osborn, MO. After completing his service, he moved to Independence where he was a resident for 68 years. He was preceded in death by his first wife Betty Bernice Higdon Graeff, and they had two daughters, Barbara Graeff Vinck and Linda Lucille Read, both of Independence. He was preceded in death by a son, Terry Reed of Washington. He married and is survived by his second wife, Betty Jean Harra Graeff of Buckner, MO. He has a stepson Jim Harra and stepdaughter Marta Harra both of Columbia, Tennessee, a stepdaughter Peggy Harra of Buckner and stepchildren Clarence Harra and Virginia Harra both who preceded him in death. He has 11 grandchildren and several great grandchildren. For most of his career, he owned two auto supply stores, Jackson County Auto Supply in Independence and Buckner Auto Supply in Buckner. He was a member of the Community of Christ Church. He loved to travel, visiting several countries and loved spending time outdoors. He especially loved animals and enjoyed feeding the many birds, squirrels, raccoons and other animals that would join him on his back deck. He is beloved by his family and friends for his friendliness, his artistry, storytelling, humor, creativity and kindness and most of all for his deep love for his family. He will be greatly missed.

William Dewey Tindall III - Obituary

 

William Dewey Tindall III September 28, 1948 — June 14, 2024 Independence, Missouri William Dewey Tindall III, 75, of Independence, MO, passed away at North Kansas City Hospital on Friday, June 14, 2024 from injuries received in a motorcycle accident on Thursday June 13, 2024. Funeral services were held at 10:00 a.m., Friday, June 21, 2024 at the Speaks Suburban Chapel with the burial that followed in Mound Grove Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations in his name to the Community Service League. Bill was born September 28, 1948 in Kansas City, MO to William Dewey Tindall II and Marybelle (Evans) and has been a lifelong area resident. He graduated from Lee’s Summit High School and enlisted in the Marine Corps. He proudly served in combat in the Marine Corps in the Vietnam War from 1968-70. He has worked as a draftsman for several companies, most recently for Burns & McDonnell. He enjoyed fishing, fly fishing, hunting, archery, and riding motorcycles. He was a good handyman and enjoyed spending time with family and friends. He was a member of the Woods Chapel Community of Christ congregation, Lee's Summit, MO. Survivors include; a son, Evan Tindall and wife Sandra of Lee's Summit; daughter, Jana Soule and husband, Kenny of Sugar Creek; step-daughter Sarah Duncan of Kansas City, MO; 2 brothers Gary Tindall and wife Charlene of Weston, MO and Duane Tindall and wife Jill of Kansas City, MO; a sister, Suzanne Cox and husband Ron of Edwards, MO; 2 half-sisters, Martye DeJung and husband Tim of Omaha, NE and Mary Graham of Sutton, NE; former wife and mother of their children Marilyn Tindall of Independence, MO and former wife Christine Sharp of Independence, MO; 6 grandchildren and 5 great grandchildren.

 LIVING IN THE KINGDOM OF GOD JUNE 20, 2024

To the Saints and faithful brethren which are at __________________________ (Fill in where you live). Grace be unto you, and peace from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ. This was Paul’s greetings to the Colossians and so we use it also to greet each of you wherever you are in God’s Kingdom.

As we consider living in the Kingdom of God, we realize we are not all that much different from the Colossians or any other group of people who have lived on this earth since the creation. Of course we have things, convieniences, etc that no other people have ever had, but we also have the same human nature that Adam and Eve had to live with. Every generation and every individual has had to make a choice/choices that identify what kingdom they were living in. So it is for us today. We will look at Colossians chapter three and see where we might place ourselves.

Seek the things of God--Put off the old man and put on Christ--Charity, humility, obedience, family duties 3:1 If ye then be risen with Christ, seek those things which are above, where Christ sitteth on the right hand of God. 2 Set your affection on things above, not on things on the earth. 3 For ye are dead, and your life is hid with Christ in God. 4 When Christ, who is our life, shall appear, then shall ye also appear with him in glory. 5 Mortify, therefore, your members which are upon the earth: fornication, uncleanness, inordinate affection, evil concupiscence, and covetousness, which is idolatry; 6 For which things' sake the wrath of God cometh on the children of disobedience, 7 In the which ye also walked sometime, when ye lived in them. 8 But now ye also put off all these: anger, wrath, malice, blasphemy, filthy communication out of your mouth. 9 Lie not one to another, seeing that ye have put off the old man with his deeds, 10 And have put on the new man, which is renewed in knowledge after the image of him that created him, 11 Where there is neither Greek nor Jew, circumcision nor uncircumcision, barbarian, Scythian, bond nor free; but Christ is all and in all. 12 Put on, therefore, as the elect of God, holy and beloved, bowels of mercies, kindness, humbleness of mind, meekness, long-suffering, 13 Forbearing one another, and forgiving one another if any man have a quarrel against any; even as Christ forgave you, so also do ye. 14 And above all these things, put on charity, which is the bond of perfectness. 15 And let the peace of God rule in your hearts, to the which also ye are called in one body; and be ye thankful. 16 Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly in all wisdom: teaching and admonishing one another in psalms, and hymns, and spiritual songs, singing with grace in your hearts to the Lord. 17 And whatsoever ye do in word or deed, do all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God and the Father by him. 18 Wives, submit yourselves unto your own husbands, as it is fit in the Lord. 19 Husbands, love your wives and be not bitter against them. 20 Children, obey your parents in all things; for this is well pleasing unto the Lord. 21 Fathers, provoke not your children to anger, lest they be discouraged. 22 Servants, obey in all things your masters according to the flesh--not with eye-service, as men-pleasers, but in singleness of heart, fearing God; 23 And whatsoever ye do, do it heartily, as to the Lord and not unto men, 24 Knowing that of the Lord ye shall receive the reward of the inheritance; for ye serve the Lord Christ. 25 But he that doeth wrong shall receive for the wrong which he hath done; and there is no respect of persons. This scripture is just one of many that make clear the path we must follow if we desire permanent residency in the Kingdom Jesus will bring into its fullness.

Doctrine and Covenants 38:2 c ”Behold, the kingdom is yours and the enemy shall not overcome.”

And 38:4 c “...fear not for the kingdom is yours and for your salvation I give unto you a commandment…” The commandments are many and the promises of God are most abundant. May we live a kingdom quality life that will glorify God and bring others to Him.

WHAT DOES JESUS WANT US TO DO?

Jesus is busy. He has a lot of work to do and an incredible amount and scope of work going on in the world and probably in Heaven. We might say his plate is full. The world is full of hate, deception and destruction. It’s past the tipping point. No human effort or organization can return the earth to self-sustaining, virtuous government. No efforts other than Godly efforts can ensure people’s future -- their and our future safety and happiness. There ARE Godly efforts by Godly people, attempting to bring truth, health and well-being to endangered people around the globe. These efforts, themselves, operate under great danger and duress from enemies trying to discredit and destroy them. In our own country, truth and justice are treated with hate and contempt by the left, and of course, by the main-stream media. This results, therefore, in generating general low-grade babble among a large percentage of the populace. Our country’s educational system teaches moral filth and trash while teaching contempt for virtue. Our own people are caught up in it, largely because truth is now so obscured and because discernment requires full-time effort that can only bear fruit through full-time dedication to Christ – who is truth.

So, yes, there is a universe of overwhelming work for Christ’s followers to do. Can all of this massive work be broken down into happily manageable tasks for each of us? Breathe a big sigh of relief: of course, it can. Our Creator created us to be happy and fulfilled. He created each of us with our own gifts, our own challenges and our own responsibilities. He intends for us to apply those special abilities for each other in the Big Effort, his Heaven-like life existence on the earth. This is Christ’s goal for us; it is what he referred to when asked how to pray. He said, “Our Father who art in Heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come, thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven…” He doesn’t speak meaningless rhetoric. If he said it, it is meant to be – it is the reality and not the deception. No unclean thing can reside in Heaven and we can be sure that no hateful and deceptive thing thing can reside in His kingdom on the earth!

Back to the daunting tasks and duties laid upon us. There is a delightful hymn containing the phrase, “to make this duty our delight”. This is an eternal truth and correct attitude. Sadly though, and seemingly unfairly, some of us have duties and conditions in our lives that are so heart-breaking and trying, so burdensome and unrelenting, so painful that they exceed human endurance. We must come to each others’ aid in those situations and bear each others’spiritual, mental and physical burdens. We are aware that these situations also exist around the world. Our pain and concern for them is not relieved by the fact that they are far away where we can’t see them. Christ’s kingdom on the earth is to be a place of safety and refuge for them.

Jesus said, “Let us reason together…” For his kingdom on the earth to be a physical reality, all of his pure-in-heart need to have means to communicate with each other freely under his blessings and on his pure terms, free of prejudice among ourselves. Zionworks was called into existence for that purpose; to reason together in prayer and under Jesus’ guidance to apply each of our talents and responsibilities for his kingdom on the earth. We pray to hear Jesus directions and to happily apply them, while being aware of all scriptures he has given in the past. Please join us in this reasoning and praying together this coming Sunday afternoon.
