Moyne Annette DeLong Moyne Annette De Long, of Independence, Missouri, passed away at her home in eastern Independence on the morning of Wednesday, July 17, 2024, at the age of 87. Born April 17, 1937, in Leon, Iowa, she was the eldest child of Melvin James "Scoop" and Beulah Leora Schofield. Moyne spent her childhood in Lamoni, Iowa. At the age of 15, Moyne faced profound loss with the tragic death of her father, which led her mother to take up work at the Lamoni Bank while Moyne assumed responsibility for her siblings. That same year in 1952, Moyne started dating John Alvan De Long, a farmboy from Andover, Missouri, who would become her lifelong partner. Moyne graduated from Lamoni High School in 1955 and married John on June 8, 1958. Over the years, they relocated frequently due to John's career, living in Lamoni, Columbia and Independence (Missouri), Northglenn (Colorado), Albuquerque (New Mexico), Concord (California), Berlin (New Jersey) and Woodridge (Illinois) before settling back in Independence in 1977. Throughout her life, Moyne had a deep love for music, having played the cello during her school years. She continued to cherish classical music, particularly Mozart's Requiem and Handel's Messiah, long after setting aside her instrument. After her children were grown, Moyne began working at the MidContinent Public Library, where she dedicated herself to sorting through new books until her retirement in 2002. Known for her cheerful demeanor, Moyne brightened the lives of others with her trademark smiley face drawings slipped into her children's lunchboxes. She was a shy and private person, characterized by her dignity, loyalty, and a quietly humorous spirit. Moyne is survived by her son Scott De Long of Independence, his son Andrew (40) with Catherine, and great-grandson Grayson Wren De Long (13) of Sugar Creek; her daughter Julie (Tracy Christopher) Kurth, and grandsons David Kurth (26) and Adam Kurth (23) of Scottsdale, Arizona. She is also survived by 11 beloved nieces, nephews, and cousins. Moyne was preceded in death by her husband John, with whom she shared 64 years of marriage, her sister Sandra Lea McDaniel, and her brother James Douglas Schofield. |
