Daniel Elmer Waite, born in Grand Rapids, Michigan February 19, 1926, passed away at the age of 96 at home in Lee’s Summit, Missouri with his loving wife and five children on September 19, 2022.

Dan was raised in Canada on a modest prairie farm and served in the U.S. Army Air Force at Fort Churchill, Manitoba during World War II. He graduated from Graceland College in Lamoni, Iowa and went on to study Dentistry at the University of Iowa. He became a world renowned Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeon, author of numerous publications and a premier textbook.

Dr. Dan Waite was a committed academician and joined the Iowa dental faculty after dental school. He enjoyed a life of service and volunteered to serve on the HOPE ship. After serving on staff at Mayo Clinic he became Professor and Chairman of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery at the University of Minnesota and later served at Baylor College of Dentistry.

Dan retired and lived out his life in Independence, Missouri. He continued to serve his community through his church, Salvation Army and UMKC School of Dentistry. He lived a humble life and was a committed husband and father. He considered himself a lucky kid.

His compassion and personal advice touched many people of different walks of life. He was truly a great man by many measures and will be long remembered. He is survived by his wife Alice of 74 years, five children and many grand and great grandchildren.

A celebration of life is scheduled November 12, 2022 at 2 PM
