Jacob T. Scherer Obituary |
Jacob T. Scherer was born April 21, 1931 in Anderson Township, Essex County, Ontario Canada. He grew up in Ontario and first moved to the United States to attend Graceland College. He finished his two year degree at Graceland College and then completed his bachelors degree at Central Missouri State University where he met the love of his life Lucy Ann (Lesh) Scherer. After graduating he moved to Independence, Missouri where he lived for the rest of his life. He is preceded in death by his wife of 62 years, Lucy; his parents Michael and Juliana Scherer; his brothers: Harry, Michael, Stan, Albert, Sam, and Tom; and his sister Elizabeth. He is survived by his youngest brother John Scherer (Donna). He is also survived by his four children: Terri Price (Duane Jr.), Rhonda Presler (Rex), Bradly Scherer (Kathy) and John Scherer; as well as his 13 grandchildren: Anna Price, Duane Price III, Amy Downey, Stephanie Perrin (Jeff), Laura Presler, Beth Presler, Jacob Presler, Alison Ott (Elliot), Rob Scherer, Mike Scherer, Anthony Scherer, Drew Scherer and Daniel Scherer; and his great grandchildren: Holden Downey, Isa Perrin, Flora Perrin and Michael Scherer. Jake grew up on a working farm and held many labor jobs as a youth. At one point he rode his bike two miles to catch the bus to go to school. His high school career ended his junior year when he was taken out of school to work in the fields on their farm. He always felt fortunate that Graceland allowed him to attend without a high school diploma. He went on to ultimately receive a Master’s degree from CMSU. Jake started a career as a Social Worker but soon decided the work was too heartbreaking. He then became a High School Counselor and worked as a Counselor at Raytown South High School for 30 years. He retired just in time to babysit his oldest granddaughters Amy and Stephanie for a few years until they started school. He also began his “retirement” career as a truck farmer and spent many years selling fruits and vegetables at Liberty and Independence Farmers Markets. Jake was an elder in the Reorganized Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints. He currently attended South Crysler Restoration Branch. He spent many years as the Sunday School Director and was still singing in the choir. Jake passed peacefully surrounded by his immediate family on April 17, 2023. Visitation: South Crysler Restoration Branch, Sunday, April 23, 2:00 p.m. To send a flower arrangement or to plant trees in memory of Jacob T.
