Storage Space Needed and Volunteer Manager

Hello, IIAW and Unity Center Friends,

In preparation for a creative recycling event in Independence this fall, we are looking for creative recycling items, a place to store them for the summer, and a contact person to receive and manage the items.

One vision we have for Independence is a creative recycling center like Scraps KC, where materials that would normally go in the trash may be "upcycled" and resold and repurposed. For now, the goal is to establish a yearly event that uses these materials and found objects to create art projects, a fun creative way to raise public awareness of our growing landfill waste challenges and begin thinking of ways to reuse our resources instead of throwing them away.

The IIAW, the Sustainability Commission, Community Services League, the Mayor and City Council are a few groups who are addressing the amount of trash in the city, and finding ways to reduce non-biodegradable waste.

More Information will be forthcoming.

Below is a partial list of items and materials we will need for the event:

Cardboard and styrofoam packing material
Small boxes
Foil tops from yogurt containers - washed
Yarn
Beads
Small stones and shells
Wire
Jewelry making materials
Buttons
Fabric
Plastic containers with no printing
Coin collecting containers and foam coin gasket rings
Driftwood
Grapevine
Car accident debris - tail light plastic
Plastic tubing
Plastic caps from bottled water
