Leonard Kent Thompson Obituary

Leonard Kent Thompson February 19, 1951 — January 4, 2024 Independence Leonard Kent Thompson was born on February 19, 1951, to Everett and Leah (Lesh) Thompson of Independence, Missouri. As a youth, Leonard was involved in Zion’s League and Boy Scouts, where he attained the rank of Eagle. He was a varsity wrestler at Truman High School, winning District and setting a school record for penning an opponent in 10 seconds. Leonard graduated high school in 1969 and married Teresa Smith in 1973. He completed a Bachelor of Science and Technology at Pittsburg State University in 1976. With this, Leonard embarked on a roughly 40-year career as an industrial designer working for Cramer Inc., Fike Metal Products, Hallmark Cards, and doing free-lance design work. His design projects ranged from fitness equipment to office equipment, to retail displays. His design efficiencies saved his companies millions of dollars and earned him multiple awards. He still holds multiple patents. He also founded the company Demiurge, which produced wooden power tool toys. Leonard was deeply involved in South Chrysler Restoration Branch, where he held the priesthood office of Teacher. He wrote the book Celestial Law: Principles for the Celestial Kingdom, offered at the Restoration Bookstore. Leonard dedicated countless hours as a Cub Scout leader, developing a religious program for the Cub Scouts at South Crysler. He was also an active Boy Scout leader with Troop 173, hardly missing an overnight or meeting in the 7 years his son was active. In free time, Leonard enjoyed studying scripture, lovingly refurbishing a historic home in Golden Acres, and wood working. Those who knew him will miss his hands always eager to help, the mischievous twinkle in his blue eyes, and his caring sincerity. Leonard Thompson passed from this life on January 4th, 2024. He was preceded in death by his parents, Everett and Leah, his granddaughter Aiokli Thompson, and many aunts and uncles to whom he was close. He is survived by his wife of 50 years, Teresa Thompson of Independence, MO, his brother Steve and sister-in-law Bonnie Thompson of Port Charlotte, FL, his sister Sharon Gerlt of Kansas City, MO, brother-in-law and sister-in-law Anthony and Chere Smith of Independence, MO, his son Ian and daughter-in-law Amy Thompson of Atoka, OK, his nephew Scott Thompson, his niece Jennifer Archambeault of Wildwood, MO, and his nephew Collin Smith of Independence, MO.
