AUSTRALIAN RESTORATION NEWS
April, 2018
Around and About the Centre Place
by High Priest Paul J. Gage, Independence, Missouri
April Greetings to the wonderful Saints in Australia,
As you all know, April is a very special month in the life of the church as well in the Christian world as we remember the sacrifice of God and Jesus Christ. Jesus died on the cross for the sins of those who believe on His name as we find in John 3:16-17, Mark 16:15; Alma 19:71; Helaman 3:47-48; and DC 33:1:a,b. We, of all people, should not be "lulled to sleep" thinking we are " saved" just because we belong to "the Church." Nor that we are the only ones who can be saved. As John states, "WHOSOEVER." Whosoever refers to any person.
April 6 is a special date. Many believe it is the day of Christ's birth and the day of His Resurrection. In Church History, the Church was organized in 1830, an important conference was held in 1853 and a special conference in 1860 when Joseph II came to take his place as leader of the Church, all on April 6. As we find in church history Volume 1, pp. 67-68 and also Doctrine and Covenants 17 directions from God as to the organizing of the church Joseph Smith, Jr., wrote: "In this manner did the Lord continue to give us instructions from time to time concerning the duties which now devolved upon us; and among many other things of the kind, we obtained of him the following, by the spirit of prophecy and revelation, which not only gave us much information, but also pointed out to us the precise day upon which, according to his will and commandment, we should proceed to organize his church once again here upon the earth" (Times and Seasons, 3:928-929). D&C 17:1a The rise of the church of Christ in these last days, being one thousand eight hundred and thirty years since the coming of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ in the flesh, it being regularly organized and established agreeably to the laws of our country, by the will and commandments of God in the fourth month, and on the sixth day of the month which is called April; D&C 17:1b which commandments were given to Joseph Smith, Jr., who was called of God and ordained an apostle of Jesus Christ, to be the first elder of this church; and to Oliver Cowdery, who was also called of God an apostle of Jesus Christ, to be the second elder of this church, and ordained under his hand; D&C 17:1c and this according to the grace of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, to whom be all glory, both now and forever. Amen. This is a good time to re-emphasize the beginnings of the church in 1830. Whether in the branches, homes, individually, or all, time should be taken to remind us of our church heritage. I realize it is not that easy when the Saints are isolated, but still, we should never be isolated from our heritage or our Lord. The Conference of Restoration Elders and Pastors of Zion will be promoting church heritage during the week of April 1-7, 2018. The All-Branch Sacrament Service at Waldo Avenue RB/Center Place Restoration School usually held on the first Sunday in April was held March 4th to avoid April 1, which is Resurrection Sunday (Easter). There is an all Restoration hymn sing at the Stone Church on Friday, April 6. As you may recall, a home was purchased that once belonged to Joseph Smith III and Israel A. Smith. The home was the location for ten or more sections of the Doctrine and Covenants that came through these two prophets. A Board of Directors has been formed and some relatives of the Smith family are on the Board. We are into the season of retreats with all the events of summer time on the horizon. Several women's retreats are scheduled for April in the Centre Place, Ohio/West Virginia, and the Northwest (Oregon/Washington.) As always, April will be a busy month in the Centre Place. All the missionary groups are staying active with mission trips being planned by each group for those areas under their fields of ministry. Continue to pray for the missionary work around the world. We are seeking input from the Australian Saints and Priesthood as to what ministry is desired in late 2018 and 2019. As you know Elders Kevin Humphrey and Tom Rindels are currently in Australia. Please let us know your thoughts. We are also encouraging Australian Saints to join us here in the USA for summer reunions and other gathering. Anyone interested, feel free to contact the SEAAM Board through me. God bless each of you very much. If anyone would like to send in a brief testimony regarding Brother Leo Carroll, please do so by March 30, 2018. His Memorial Service is Saturday, April 7, 2018 at 11:00 am at Waldo Avenue RB and will be live streamed. Hopefully you have received Issue # 122 of the Tidings of Zion. The next issue is set to be published and mailed in late May.

Riches From The Scriptures. by Elder Neil Kerswell, Queensland, Australia. Chapter 15 Rise and Fall of God’s People During the course of my life I have known both what it is like to have little, to have in abundance and to have what we need. In all those circumstances of life I have had both good and bad attitude towards my fellow man in relation to it. I have seen the same happening in the lives of all people around me. The problem that occurs within the church is that God’s people sometimes lose sight of the big picture (that we are all beggars before the Lord, dependent upon God for all that we are and have, He having bought us all with a heavy price) and become too focussed on self and taking honour unto themselves that only belongs to God, thus bringing persecution, inequality and class segregation into the church which always leads to looking down upon those who God views as beautiful souls within the fold. Let us look at the example given in 4th Nephi.
4 Nephi1:1-28 From Love to Pride in just 28 Verses [4 Nephi 1:1] And it came to pass that the thirty and fourth year passed away, and also the thirty and fifth, and behold the disciples of Jesus had formed a church of Christ in all the lands round about. [4 Nephi 1:2] And as many as did come unto them, and did truly repent of their sins, were baptized in the name of Jesus; and they did also receive the Holy Ghost. [4 Nephi 1:3] And it came to pass in the thirty and sixth year, the people were all converted unto the Lord, upon all the face of the land, both Nephites and Lamanites, and there were no contentions and disputations among them, and every man did deal justly one with another; [4 Nephi 1:4] And they had all things common among them, therefore they were not rich and poor, bond and free, but they were all made free, and partakers of the heavenly gift. There is only true peace when Christ Rules in our hearts, when God’s people know our place before God, and we see our fellow men and women as equals, all being saved through the Grace of Jesus Christ. Being filled with the Holy Ghost, which is the same Spirit and Power that is the life of Jesus Christ, dwelling in our lives to help and strengthen us, to soften and humble us, to help us have a balanced and complete outlook on life and what it is all about. In the time this scripture reveals, the disciples of Jesus had shared the truth and testimony of Jesus Christ in such a manner that it was well received by all the inhabitants of the land, allowing them all to be made free and partakers of the heavenly gift. It’s all in the delivery, these witnesses had been in the presence of Christ, felt His love, been partakers of His Glory and were humbled and empowered by it. This truly influenced the ministry they gave and their attitude towards their fellow man. Allowing God to bring the success. [4 Nephi 1:5] And it came to pass that the thirty and seventh year passed away also, and there still continued to be peace in the land. [4 Nephi 1:6] And there were great and marvelous works wrought by the disciples of Jesus, insomuch that they did heal the sick, and raise the dead, and cause the lame to walk, and the blind to receive their sight, and the deaf to hear; [4 Nephi 1:7] And all manner of miracles did they work among the children of men; and in nothing did they work miracles save it were in the name of Jesus [4 Nephi 1:8] And thus did the thirty and eighth year pass away, and also the thirty and ninth, and the forty and first, and the forty and second; yea, even until forty and nine years had passed away, and also the fifty and first, and the fifty and second; yea, and even until fifty and nine years had passed away; [4 Nephi 1:9] And the Lord did prosper them exceedingly, in the land: yea, insomuch that they did build cities again where there had been cities burned; yea, even that great city Zarahemla did they cause to be built again. [4 Nephi 1:10] But there were many cities which had been sunk, and waters came up in the stead thereof; therefore these cities could not be renewed. [4 Nephi 1:11] And now behold it came to pass that the people of Nephi did wax strong, and did multiply exceeding fast, and became an exceeding fair and delightsome people. [4 Nephi 1:12] And they were married, and given in marriage, and were blessed according to the multitude of the promises which the Lord had made unto them. [4 Nephi 1:13] And they did not walk any more after the performances and ordinances of the Law of Moses, but they did walk after the commandments which they had received from their Lord and their God, continuing in fasting and prayer, and in meeting together oft, both to pray and to hear the word of the Lord. [4 Nephi 1:14] And it came to pass that there was no contention among all the people, in all the land, but there were mighty miracles wrought among the disciples of Jesus. [4 Nephi 1:15] And it came to pass that the seventy and first year passed away, and also the seventy and second year; yea, and in fine, until the seventy and ninth year had passed away; yea, even an hundred years had passed away, and the disciples of Jesus, whom he had chosen, had all gone to the paradise of God, save it were the three who should tarry; [4 Nephi 1:16] And there were other disciples ordained in their stead; and also many of that generation which had passed away. [4 Nephi 1:17] And it came to pass that there was no contention in the land, because of the love of God which did dwell in the hearts of the people. [4 Nephi 1:18] And there were no envyings, nor strifes, nor tumults, nor whoredoms, nor lyings, nor murders, nor any manner of lasciviousness; [4 Nephi 1:19] And surely there could not be a happier people among all the people who had been created by the hand of God [4 Nephi 1:20] There were no robbers, nor murderers, neither were there Lamanites, nor any manner of ites; but they were in one, the children of Christ, and heirs to the kingdom of God; [4 Nephi 1:21] And how blessed were they, for the Lord did bless them in all their doings; yea, even they were blessed and prospered, until an hundred and ten years had passed away; and the first generation from Christ had passed away, and there was no contention in all the land. One thing to be noted here is that all the blessings these people received of every kind were a blessing from God through Christ. While ever the people of God can maintain some sort of an understanding that this is indeed the truth in all cases, they can continue to have peace in every form, remaining free from the Spirit of Contention, Pride, Overinflated Self-Worth and Ego to destroy what God intended for them. God wants us to be fair in all our dealings (Fair - Free from favoritism or self-interest or bias or deception; Not excessive or extreme. In conformity with the rules or laws and without fraud or cheating). But even when things are going as well as depicted in these verses of scripture, it is all the more reason to be diligent keeping watch for Satan and his ways, he is always attempting to upset and corrupt the good desires of mankind. Let’s read on. [4 Nephi 1:22] And it came to pass that Nephi, he that kept the last record, (and he kept it upon the plates of Nephi,) died, and his son Amos kept it in his stead; and he kept it upon the plates of Nephi also; 4 Nephi 1:23] And he kept it eighty and four years, and there was still peace in the land, save it were a small part of the people who had revolted from the church, and took upon them the name of Lamanites; therefore there began to be Lamanites again in the land. [4 Nephi 1:24] And it came to pass that Amos died also, (and it was an hundred and ninety and four years from the coming of Christ,) and his son Amos kept the record in his stead; and he also kept it upon the plates of Nephi; and it was also written in the book of Nephi, which is this book. [4 Nephi 1:25] And it came to pass that two hundred years had passed away, and the second generation had all passed away save it were a few. We see here that, some people were ceasing to call themselves the people of Christ and were becoming tribal again, taking upon themselves the names of men to be gathered under. This has happened to one degree or another in the church during our days, people have gathered under this man or that man, trying to stay true to the Gospel, ultimately all men and women will fail us in the long run, because only one is worthy to stand and to be our King, for worthy is the Lamb, even Jesus Christ. We must never lose sight of this, never trust in the arm of flesh, lean not to our own understandings and above all never try to force our beliefs or ways upon another, it will always end in division. Intelligent people will never allow their agency to be taken away by another. Battles have been fought in heaven over this and must never be encouraged within the church, as it ceases to be Christ’s church and becomes the church of the devil whenever the agency of men and women are trodden underfoot. [4 Nephi 1:26] And now I, Mormon, would that ye should know that the people had multiplied, insomuch that they were spread upon all the face of the land, and that they had become exceeding rich, because of their prosperity in Christ. [4 Nephi 1:27] And now in this two hundred and first year, there began to be among them those who were lifted up in pride, such as the wearing of costly apparel, and all manner of fine pearls, and of the fine things of the world. [4 Nephi 1:28] And from that time forth they did have their goods and their substance no more common among them, and they began to be divided into classes, and they began to build up churches unto themselves, to get gain, and began to deny the true church of Christ. This is always the way of Mankind when we forget our place, and begin to say the Blessings of Christ are our own and because of our own doing. I would like to share some of the signs to look out for in ourselves: 1. Some people begin to say they are blessed above others and look down upon others as being slothful and disobedient, forgetting that all good things come from God and unto those whom much is given much is required at their hands 2. Some who have been blest with strength of body and good health look upon others who don’t have this gift as being that way because they are sinful, failing to realise we are all sinners and all rely upon Christ for Salvation. 3. Some people who have been blest with many possessions begin to believe they are that way because of righteousness and therefore those with less must somehow be not righteous. 4. Those with great understanding of the Scriptures lose sight that it is a gift of God and think it is because they are more studious and righteous than others, therefore others are more sinful. 5. Those with a great gift to retain information to memory, therefore allowing them to advance in education above others, can be deceived into thinking they are that way because of righteousness and that others whose gift is to work with their hands are not as blest. 6. Some people who have a gift to be very good parents and have children who are healthy, gentle in nature and well behaved, can be deceived into thinking it’s because they keep all the commandments and then look down upon families who do not find parenting easy and may have children with disabilities etc. When all the while they should be offering to give a helping hand or engaging in silent prayers of love for God’s help and support to ease the challenges on this family. You can probably think of many more examples of how we as people can allow satan to deceive us into believing we are more than we are in the wrong context. In short, we all fall short of the Glory of God and therefore must be the humble followers of Jesus Christ, Harmless as Doves, knowing and believing our place before God and not thinking more highly of ourselves than we ought. Whenever we take the honour of any of God’s gifts unto ourselves and begin to think we are better than our fellow man we have become lost and shall be most miserable amongst men and women at the last day. It is under these circumstances when all the principles of Christ cease to exist in the hearts of men and women, feeling our way towards the large and spacious building of Lehi’s vision which is the pride of mankind and great shall be the fall of it, for it cannot and shall not stand. If it is Christ’s church it shall be called by His name, if we are Christ’s at His coming we shall know the name by which we are called and through whom we are saved and all good things come. We shall be known as the people of Christ. For if we are of any other man then we are His and not the Lord’s. Know the name by which you are called! Give honour unto God through the name of Jesus Christ and acknowledge Him as the Author, of your Faith and the Provider of all that is good. Honour Him and Him only, pray unceasing not only asking for things we need but more importantly giving thanks for all we have and shall receive. Be humble, full of Love and feed the Lord’s sheep. Be aware there is always the threat of wolves in our midst. Most wolves come from within and go out from the Church, speaking and boasting much. 4 Nephi 1: 29-53 [4 Nephi 1:29] And it came to pass that when two hundred and ten years had passed away, there were many churches in the land; yea, there were many churches which professed to know the Christ, and yet they did deny the more part of his gospel, insomuch that they did receive all manner of wickedness, and did administer that which was sacred unto him to whom it had been forbidden, because of unworthiness. [4 Nephi 1:30] And this church did multiply exceedingly, because of iniquity, and because of the power of Satan who did get hold upon their hearts.
When I was a young man I saw some of these very things take place within the Reorganized Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. My family had invited some non-members to travel with us and other church youth, to visit with a family far out in a country area who rarely had church due to distance. My father was a Teacher in the priesthood therefore to have communion with them, church leadership would volunteer to assist with the appropriate priesthood callings. It had been explained to both non-members and Priesthood who shouldn’t partake because they were not baptised. However the leadership offered the sacrament, which made the non-member feel obliged to partake. This caused so much damage in the life on the non-member and when multiple people present bore witness against the leadership who had transgressed, nothing was ever done and this apostate behaviour continued over the years and became much worse. Eventually about half the church membership separated, standing aside for two main reasons. 1. To hold onto the light and truth we knew so that future generations might
know the joy we had of the fullness of the Gospel of Jesus Christ. 2. So that we might not be partakers of the darkness and apostasy that would ultimately come upon those who were deliberately letting go of the truth (it shall be taken away from them even the light which they have). [4 Nephi 1:31] And again, there was another church which denied the Christ; and they did persecute the true church of Christ; because of their humility, and their belief in Christ, and they did despise them, because of the many miracles which were wrought among them; [4 Nephi 1:32] Therefore they did exercise power and authority over the disciples of Jesus who did tarry with them, and they did cast them into prison; [4 Nephi 1:33] But by the power of the word of God, which was in them, the prisons were rent in twain, and they went forth doing mighty miracles among them. [4 Nephi 1:34] Nevertheless, and notwithstanding all these miracles, the people did harden their hearts, and did seek to kill them, even as the Jews at Jerusalem sought to kill Jesus, according to his word, [4 Nephi 1:35] And they did cast them into furnaces of fire, and they came forth receiving no harm; and they also cast them into dens of wild beasts, and they did play with the wild beasts even as a child with a lamb; and they did come forth from among them, receiving no harm. [4 Nephi 1:36] Nevertheless, the people did harden their hearts, for they were led by many priests and false prophets to build up many churches, and to do all manner of iniquity. It could be said why doesn’t God send powerful Angels to convince the people of the error of their ways like He did with Alma the son of Alma so they could be changed for good and be blest. I am reminded that seeing an angel only changes those who would be changed. Laman and Lemuel saw an angel and were shaken by the great power of God but were only ever changed momentarily for good. They were born unto Godly parents and taught in all God’s ways but would not submit to God’s ways, whereas people like Alma and Saul who became Paul, just needed some powerful redirection and they would engage in the Gospel for life. We see this in the scriptural example above, the wicked had some of the most powerful and potent ministry in their midst, even when the wicked tried to kill the disciples, they were preserved through God’s miraculous Power. But even this did not change the course of their lives. It is right to hope for God’s blessing and powerful redirection if it will be beneficial in someone’s life. We should always hope and pray for the best in everyone we know. [4 Nephi 1:37] And they did smite upon the people of Jesus; but the people of Jesus did not smite again. [4 Nephi 1:38] And thus they did dwindle in unbelief and wickedness, from year to year, even until two hundred and thirty years had passed away. [4 Nephi 1:39] And now it came to pass in this year, yea, in the two hundred and thirty and first year, there was a great division among the people. [4 Nephi 1:40] And it came to pass that in this year there arose a people who were called the Nephites, and they were true believers in Christ; and among them there were those who were called by the Lamanites, Jacobites, and Josephites, and Zoramites; [4 Nephi 1:41] Therefore the true believers in Christ, and the true worshipers of Christ, (among whom were the three disciples of Jesus who should tarry,) were called Nephites, and Jacobites, and Josephites, and Zoramites. [4 Nephi 1:42] And it came to pass that they who rejected the gospel, were called Lamanites, and Lemuelites, and Ishmaelites; and they did not dwindle in unbelief, but they did wilfully rebel against the gospel of Christ; [4 Nephi 1:43] And they did teach their children that they should not believe, even as their fathers, from the beginning, did dwindle. [4 Nephi 1:44] And it was because of the wickedness and abominations of their fathers, even as it was in the beginning. [4 Nephi 1:45] And they were taught to hate the children of God, even as the Lamanites were taught to hate the children of Nephi, from the beginning. [4 Nephi 1:46] And it came to pass that two hundred and forty and four years had passed away, and thus were the affairs of the people. [4 Nephi 1:47] And the more wicked part of the people did wax strong, and became exceeding more numerous than were the people of God. [4 Nephi 1:48] And they did still continue to build up churches unto themselves, and adorn them with all manner of precious things. [4 Nephi 1:49] And thus did two hundred and fifty years pass away, and also two hundred and sixty years. [4 Nephi 1:50] And it came to pass that the wicked part of the people began again to build up the secret oaths and combinations of Gadianton. [4 Nephi 1:51] And also the people who were called the people of Nephi, began to be proud in their hearts, because of their exceeding riches, and became vain, like unto their brethren, the Lamanites. [4 Nephi 1:52] And from this time, the disciples began to sorrow for the sins of the world. [4 Nephi 1:53] And it came to pass that when three hundred years had passed away, both the people of Nephi and the Lamanites had become exceeding wicked one like unto another. Isn’t this a tragedy, I have heard it said over the years, how could these people have been so blind, how could they fall away so quickly, surely they knew it was happening. What is important is that collectively and not individually both the wicked and those who should be more righteous were all wicked together and could not see it, things of particular note. 1. All were called by the name of a man or a family instead of being one people known by the name by which they are all saved (People of Jesus Christ). 2. Pride had taken hold on the hearts of most who were once of the faith, bringing about the fall of God’s people, it mentions the riches brought them down, I think this was only a part of the problem, as mentioned previously satan desires to corrupt our good desires causing us to think more highly of ourselves than we ought, bringing contention and division through personal pride. 3. Secret oaths and works had taken hold which is an abomination in the sight of God. 4. There were many churches built up for many reasons, almost all of which was contrary to the will of God 5. The wicked had become far more numerous than believers. 6. The true believers of God who still held on were greatly persecuted. I hope we can see that our day is not too different; all the ingredients above exist to one degree or another today.
Even amongst those who seek to remain faithful there is a tendency to group under this man or that man, or that woman. Pride is all too strong and humility is becoming a rare commodity. Some ministry is all about personal testimony and very little about Jesus Christ our Lord and His word which is the Rod of Iron and the Sword of the Spirit which is an important part of having on the whole armour of God. Personal testimony is important and is needed in ministry, but if it ever becomes the primary source is nothing more than overindulgence and self-promotion. God’s people in times past sacrificed much, endured much and lost much in order to make it possible for our generation to have the Word of God as manifested in Scripture. They knew how important it is to be able to cling to God’s Word. May we hold onto the Rod of Iron and never let go, for if we ever do let go and lean towards our own understanding, we shall wander from the straight and narrow path and great shall be our fall. However if we will hold on with all our might and teach others how to do likewise, pressing forward in faith believing in the promises of God, we shall be blest. I would encourage all ministry who have accepted the calling and responsibility of feeding God’s sheep to base their ministry in God’s words contained in scripture. God’s word was made flesh and dwelt amongst us in the personage of Jesus Christ our Lord. We in turn must present the word of God in a manner that brings complete understanding and a living testimony of Christ into the lives of His people. My prayer for all of you reading and myself is that we may always find a place for true repentance each and every day of our lives. May we be prepared and fully sanctified and made ready to meet Christ, whether there is still time that we may pass from this life through death into the paradise of God or whether we meet Him at His Coming, the blessing is the same and is of the greatest importance. May we be blest with Eternal Life as God intends [John 17:3] And this is life eternal, that they might know thee the only true God, and Jesus Christ, whom thou hast sent.. *******************

Tamworth News submitted by Sr. Helen Archer We continue to meet each Sunday with Elder Peter Archer presiding over our Services. Brother Peter had been working to prepare the Church car, servicing it and fixing the air-conditioner and other things to make it safe and road worthy for our visitors from the States. On Thursday the 8th of March the Tamworth group went to the Tamworth Airport to welcome Elder Tom Rindels and Elder Kevin Humphrey to Australia, taking them home, with Brother Tom staying at Deacon Roy and Sr. Daphne Schubert's and Brother Kevin domiciled at Br. Peter and Sr. Helen Archers’ home. We let them rest that evening, having given them a short tour on the way home to their accommodation. Friday we took them to do some of the chores they needed to do and let them rest again in the afternoon to try to adjust to our time zone. Friday evening we gathered at the Schubert's to fellowship together. Brother Bob Wilkinson came and joined in all the activities. Elder Danny Archer and Kris traveled from Sydney on Friday after work and arrived very late that evening, staying with Peter and Helen. Saturday we all had the evening meal with homemade Pizza at the Schubert's followed by a hymn sing. Church Building Improvements. Thanks to a much appreciated donation that was given for a specific designation, The Kingston Branch has seen some major refurbishment. The old carpet in the chapel has been replaced by commercial carpet tiles; the bedroom and the Pastor’s room have been completely redone with carpet, king size single beds and furnishings. It has made a tremendous improvement and we are very grateful for the fact that danger of tripping in the chapel has been overcome and the bedroom and pastor’s room are now a lot more functional for when we have visitors stay.
