George Gross Obituary

George Gross Jr., 92, of Deer Isle, Maine, and then Independence, Missouri, passed away February 11, 2018. Born March 27, 1925 in Stonington, Maine, he served proudly in the 107th Seabees during WWII in the Marshall Islands and on Tinian. George met Polly, his late wife, when his ship docked in Portland, Oregon, after the end of the war. He was only there for a few days until the Navy secured passage for him to return to Maine, but he saw Polly on the street corner and it was love at first sight. They were married a few months later. They had 4 children, 4 grandchildren, and 9 great-grandchildren. They shared 66 years together before she passed. George was always active. He started the Stonington Lobster Co-op, built the Stonington Recreation Center, worked in real-estate, insurance, and helped charter a bank. He also led archaeological tours through Central America, was active in local politics, and traveled the United States as an elder in the R.L.D.S. Church preaching the love of Jesus. He loved to tell the story of Jesus.

His memorial service will be Saturday, March 10, 2018, 1:00 p.m. Visitation, 2:00 p.m. Memorial Service at:
The Gathering Place Worship Center
