An Update and Opportunity for the Work in Kenya!
As some of you may know, Doug and Judi Smith founded and are currently working full time in Kenya at the Mildred Smith Mission Health Center. This clinic, a ministry of African Restoration Ministries, is providing low-cost, or in some cases free, health care to local church and community members. The clinic has been up and running since the beginning of the year. It has been very well received by the community and is a huge blessing to the church there.
While Kenya has a healthcare system, it is plagued by many issues. Private clinics can provide similar care to what we might find here in the US but at an inflated price that only the richest Kenyans can afford. Government run clinics are somewhat less expensive but often provide substandard care or are shut down completely due to frequent strikes by clinic staff. For these reasons, church members in Kenya have often gone without medical care for illnesses that are easily and inexpensively treated.
The Mildred Smith Mission Health Center provides high quality, compassionate care that is very affordable for the average Kenyan. This includes care a Kenyan wouldn’t find many other places such as preventative care, nutrition education, reliable low-cost lab tests and a holistic approach to the well-being of patients.
The clinic is currently operating out of a rented building in the city of Kisumu. Patients in the clinic and local doctors have been very impressed with the quality of care that is being provided. However, the rent is high and the building is small. It does not have the space for laboratory equipment which would keep costs low and provide the best possible care. The hope has been to purchase a larger property where lab work and other services would be possible. After months of prayerful searching the board has located a property in nearby Awasi. This property adjoins a technical school that the church already owns and operates. It is a perfect location with a large building that would allow the clinic to create many opportunities for ministry, employment, and the strengthening of the saints. We are eager to seize this opportunity but the cost of purchasing and equipping this property would deeply impact the clinic’s current operating fund. Because of this, we are asking for donations to help us take the next step forward.
The cost to buy the property and free the clinic from the expense of rent: $50,000
The cost to buy the equipment needed to set up a laboratory: $40,000
The costs to staff the laboratory with a qualified technician for one year: $5,000
The cost to keep the laboratory supplied with necessary materials $8,000 per year
This investment can translate to hundreds of people each year saved from simple but potentially fatal illnesses that would otherwise go untreated. By giving even a $10 donation you have the power to cover significant medical expenses for a brother or sister in Kenya. Every life is precious. Please help us make a difference.
