Hedge Planting Assistance

If you are interested in having an edible/medicinal hedge planted this spring (2023), please contact Riane Marsh at:

or
804-832-9842
(an initial text is preferred) to discuss details and cost.

Our intent is to assist others in their preparation for the days ahead by installing useful plants for those who do not have the equipment, time or capacity to do so.

Additional information:
While hedges were historically used to fence in livestock or mark a boundary, today they are an efficient way to densely plant productive species for higher yields in small spaces. The type of plants included in the hedge will depend on seasonal availability but emphasis will be on small trees, bushes and hardy perennials that can be used for edible or medicinal purposes. These will likely include hazelnuts, elderberry, peaches, strawberries, raspberries, and various herbs.

Picking a site:
For the plants to flourish, we recommend a site with at least 6 hours of sunlight a day and good soil. If you would like the soil amended when we till, please have the compost or other amendments on hand and in an easily accessible location
The hedge will start small, around 3 feet wide but will eventually spread to approximately 10 feet wide. Pick a site that will accommodate this expansion. We recommend at least a 5 foot long hedge.

Site requirements and recommendations:
You have verified that there are no underground lines or wiring in the planting area.
There is no poison ivy or other invasive weeds, or if there were, you have sprayed and cleared it at least 3 weeks in advance.
If you would like soil amendments added in when we till, please have them piled next to the planting area.
If there were previous plants here, make sure they have been removed, as well as any large roots that would make rototilling difficult.

What you will receive:
Tillage of your marked planting area
A variety of medicinal or edible plants, including trees, shrubs, and perennials
A booklet discussing your plants and their needs to be successfully establishment as well as potential uses
A fresh layer of mulch to assist with plant establishment and initial weed control

Please note, due to seasonal availability we cannot guarantee which plants will be available. Also, since establishment is based on a variety of different conditions, we cannot guarantee that they will survive, though we will do our best to provide the best possible plants and useful information for you regarding their establishment.

Cost is $10 per linear foot of hedge.

Depending on your location, there may be a small travel fee included.
