Hello, IIAW and Unity Center Friends,
Here are our next volunteer events:
Saturday, February 4: Meal Prep for Beloveds, 8-10am, Unity Center, 803 W. 23rd Street.
Saturday, February 11: Neighborhood Clean Up, 9-10:30am, Unity Center parking lot.
Saturday, February 18: Meal Prep for Beloveds, 8-10am, UC
The IIAW monthly meeting day will change due to a leadership schedule conflict. A day will be announced soon.
We are looking for volunteers to create regular admin hours for the Unity Center again. Respond to this email If you are available from 9am - Noon Monday - Friday.
The City Council has approved easing building code regulations to allow churches and organizations to establish temporary public housing for people living on the streets. This is good news for the IIAW and Unity Center. We can now move forward with renovating the south wing of the Unity Center for Ruth House, transitional housing for sex trafficking and domestic abuse women and children.
Unity Center renovation continues toward installing showers and laundry facilities.
The last neighborhood clean up handled four sites. Noland Road and 23rd Street near Kentucky Fried Chicken, 23rd Street and Crysler, the Mansion House, and Winner Road and Truman, which is the area where resident Brian Kearney regularly picks up trash near his home. We applaud Brian's consistent devoted efforts to keep his neighborhood clean and attractive. He is conscious of visitors destined for the Truman home and Library. The IIAW supports citizens who organize a litter patrol with their neighbors on the 2nd Saturday. They may contact Muriel Luedeman to enlist the help of IIAW volunteers. Conquering city trash is very doable if all citizens take owner pride in their neighborhoods and community. The IIAW is on hand to help us all regain a beautiful city.
At both of our last clean ups, the team was at the right place at the right time. One team found a wallet in a driveway on S. Main Street and returned it to the neighbor who had lost it. The other team found a gun on Noland Road last month, and handed it to IPD. Neighborhood Clean Ups are doing much more than picking up trash.
The IIAW Neighborhood Transformation Team has information to help establish Caring Neighbors Groups throughout the city. We are dedicated to creating safe, vibrant, caring and collaborative neighborhoods citywide. Contact Muriel Luedeman at mur620@gmail.com for scheduling a presentation.
Our next neighborhood clean up will include the clearing out of an old camp at 23rd Street and Crysler Avenue, and will be helping Brian Kearney again picking up at Winner and Truman. We are also looking for other areas that need cleaning up.
Everyone involved in working with the homeless are invited to attend a gathering, 2-4pm at Mid-Continent Library South Branch at 13700 E. 35th Street on February 24th. The purpose is to create and update a directory of resources, and strategize plans for increased comprehensive assistance toward self-sufficiency. RSVP to Saralee Rhoads at saraleerhoadswriter@gmail.com.
