AROUND AND ABOUT THE CENTRE PLACE

As the words to one song says, "GOD ONLY KNOWS..." Only God knew what 2021 was going to bring to the world, and now we are nearing the end, again, Only God Knows what is in store for us and the world in 2022. As we find ourselves in various states of concern, hope, etc. we always faith and trust in our God, who because He knows all things has promised that He would be with us always.
One of the well loved hymns about Jesus Christ, while often only sung at Christmas time, Joy To The World, The Lord IS Come..." is a hymn that speaks to us every day of the year and year after year. There is another hymn entitle, "The Lord Will Come." It is the same tune as Joy to the World. Both speak of the power, promises, and assurance we have in our Mighty God.
We are all very much aware that the entire life of Christ is vitally important to our salvation. But His earthly life had to start just like ours, as a baby. The scriptures tell us much about the birth, Christ's genealogy and many events in His life. The Book of Mormon and Doctrine and Covenants both compliment these things very well.
"Unto us a child is born, unto us a son is given; and the government shall be upon his shoulder; and his name shall be called Wonderful, Counsellor, The mighty God, The everlasting Father, The Prince of Peace." Isaiah 9:6. "...and they shall call his name Emmanuel, (which being interpreted, is, God with us." Matthew 2:6 IV.
These scriptures among the many others are God's word to man. In today's world, maybe more than at any other time in history, mankind is turning away from anything and everything that has to do with God, religion, or simply natural vs unnatural, or good and bad. If a person does not want to believe in God or that we are bound to follow God’s commandments, they just say, "I don't believe in a God, if there is one." In Genesis 5:4 in the Inspired Version, it reads, "But, behold, also Cain hearkened not, saying, Who is the Lord, that I should know him?"
This seems to be what is happening in the United States and all over the world, which would indicate that there will be “Spiritual showdown" in the near future. The situation in the USA is extremely critical to the future of our nation and the world. The USA/world and the Church have not fulfilled our purposes and thus stand in the path of God's judgment.
BUT, JOY TO THE WORLD, THE LORD IS COME! Our challenge is to stay on the straight and narrow path, holding on to the Rod of Iron. God bless each of you as you finish this year and embark into 2022, boldly going where no man has ever been, But God is already there. Trust and Obey, there is NO other way.
As always, our Lord and Saviour, Jesus Christ, is our ultimate example. In every situation, He was guided by the instructions given to Him by His Father. This is shown clearly in Matthew 4:1-10 when, after having been led by the Spirit, into the wilderness to be with God, and fasting for 40 days and nights, and had communed with God, was left to be tempted of the devil, Jesus, in all three temptations, used the Sword of the Spirit, which is the Word of God, when He said, "It is written...."
We must know the Word of God well enough so that at every encounter with the adversary or those who work with the adversary, we will know how to use the Sword of the Spirit which is the Word of God, as we are told in Ephesians 6:17. Remember also, that often, the adversary's helpers are wolves among the sheep. As Jesus responded in the first temptation, "It is written, Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceedeth out of the mouth of God." Amen and Amen!
Others can have their "Happy Holidays," and "Season's Greetings," I will thankfully say, "MERRY CHRISTMAS!" and thank you God for your Great Gift to Us.
The Saints of Australia are to be commended for taking advantage of modern technology to stay in touch with each other. This is most vital to us in these trying times.
Most everything has been curtailed due to the virus and the fear it has inflicted in the lives of many people. Please know, this is not all just about a virus. Look for the deeper, hidden agenda of our governments.
Most all Branches in the US are back to meeting regularly in their buildings. Centre Place Restoration School (CPRS) is functioning very well this year with an enrolment over 200, which is good.
The Conference of Restoration Elders (CRE) and Pastors of Zion (POZ) are doing the best they can. Many things are still being done with Zoom technology, but the Spring Gathering, Summer Reunion, and Fall Gathering all went very well. Four to seven Branches in the Independence area have started monthly meetings on the first Sunday evening and third Wednesday of each month. These have gone very well so far. The purpose is just for worship and fellowship.
Two teams of missionaries were in Africa in November, but the efforts are still curtailed in other parts of the world. Doug and Judi Smith have been back in the US for some time and Brother Eric Odida, from Kenya, was here for the Fall Gathering. A strong effort is also being made to encourage Saints to witness to their neighbours. Each One Win One has been a church motto since the 1940's. It is still our calling today. Read Alma 4:6. God bless. Love to all.
RICHES FROM THE SCRIPTURES
By Elder Neil Kerswell, of Queensland, Australia
Vol 5 Chapter 9 Samson - Part 2
Last time we studied together we saw that Israel was in bondage because of sin and falling away from God's teachings, much like the world today, countries across the whole world that once stood up as Christian are now becoming ashamed of God and seeking to appease any belief system other than the Lord their God, who made them. Like in old times bondage is coming again because of sin and transgression and without the shield of Faith in Christ as whole nations. The countries of the world have all left themselves open to being enslaved. Prophecy in scripture gives us to know we must be looking for the coming of Christ as if it is today every day of our lives, we must be in the present with God, having a covenant that cannot be broken even upon threat of death. There is the promise of Zion the city of God here upon the Earth. However, all things worth having, usually come after much blood, sweat, tears and sacrifice. The coming forth of the Book of Mormon in the early Church is a good example.
Anyone with their spiritual eyes and ears open today can sense the tightening grip of evil across the world, the freedom we once knew is very quickly being replaced with never ending rules and regulations to restrict and control the world population, and to take away all ability to resist. Prophecy warns us that in time there will be a system forced upon all people whereby, we will no longer be able to buy or sell unless we have a mark in our foreheads or Arm which represents the evil which will take away the agency of the people of the world. I believe Christ is the great Prophet and power that will free his people from the 4 corners of the Earth. God's people we are told will be very few in number but will be in amongst every nation on earth. As evil gains great strength and power on the earth, God's people will also be visited with great power from on high which they will need to see the promises of God fulfilled in their lives. Let us read now about Samson, his country was enslaved by the Philistines because of sin. Samson was the Brute strength necessary to bring about a change.
Samson is denied his wife -- He burneth the Philistines' corn -- His wife and her father are burnt -- He is bound by the men of Judah and delivered to the Philistines -- He killeth them with a jawbone -- God maketh a fountain for him.
[Judges 15:1] But it came to pass within a while after, in the time of wheat harvest, that Samson visited his wife with a kid; and he said, I will go in to my wife into the chamber. But her father would not suffer him to go in.
2] And her father said, I verily thought that thou hadst utterly hated her; therefore, I gave her to thy companion; is not her younger sister fairer than she? take her, I pray thee, instead of her.
3] And Samson said concerning them, now shall I be more blameless than the Philistines, though I do them a displeasure.
4] And Samson went and caught three hundred foxes, and took firebrands, and turned tail to tail, and put a firebrand in the midst between two tails.
5] And when he had set the brands on fire, he let them go into the standing corn of the Philistines, and burnt up both the shocks, and also the standing corn, with the vineyards and olives.
6] Then the Philistines said, Who hath done this? And they answered, Samson, the son-in-law of the Timnite, because he had taken his wife, and given her to his companion. And the Philistines came up, and burnt her and her father with fire.
7] And Samson said unto them, Though ye have done this, yet will I be avenged of you, and after that I will cease.
8] And he smote them hip and thigh with a great slaughter; and he went down and dwelt in the top of the rock Etam.
9] Then the philistines went up, and pitched in Judah, and spread themselves in Lehi. 10] And the men of Judah said, Why are ye come up against us? And they answered, To bind Samson are we come up, to do to him as he hath done to us.
11] Then three thousand men of Judah went to the top of the rock Etam, and said to Samson, Knowest thou not that the Philistines are rulers over us? what is this that thou hast done unto us? And he said unto them, As they did unto me, so have I done unto them.
12] And they said unto him, We are come down to bind thee, that we may deliver thee into the hand of the Philistines. And Samson said unto them, Swear unto me, that ye will not fall upon me yourselves. 13] And they spake unto him, saying, No; but we will bind thee fast, and deliver thee into their hand; but surely we will not kill thee. And they bound him with two new cords, and brought him up from the rock.
The men of Judah still thought as slaves and being in bondage they were trying to stay alive by living peaceably as was possible in amongst their enemies who held the power, which was sensible if you wanted to stay alive. Samson on the other hand is thinking so long as my own people don't kill me this could be an opportunity for occasion with the Philistines.
14] And when he came into Lehi, the Philistines shouted against him; and the Spirit of the Lord came mightily upon him, and the cords that were upon his arms became as flax that was burnt with fire, and his bands loosed from off his hands.
15] And he found a new jawbone of an ass, and put forth his hand, and took it, and slew a thousand men therewith.
16] And Samson said, With the jawbone of an ass, heaps upon heaps, with the jaw of an ass have I slain a thousand men.
17] And it came to pass, when he had made an end of speaking, that he cast away the jawbone out of his hand and called that place Ramathlehi.
18] And he was sore athirst, and called on the Lord, and said, Thou hast given this great deliverance into the hand of thy servant; and now shall I die for thirst, and fall into the hand of the uncircumcised? 19] But God clave a hollow place that was in the jaw, and there came water thereout; and when he had drunk, his spirit came again, and he revived; wherefore he called the name thereof Enhakkore, which is in Lehi unto this day.
20] And he judged Israel in the days of the Philistines twenty years.
God's Spirit was with Samson and delivered his enemy into his hand, establishing him as someone to be feared, someone with special strength and power, someone assisted and supported by the power of God. Resistance and war is ugly and Samson was able to be what was required.
Chapter 16
Samson carrieth away the gates of the city of Gaza -- Delilah enticeth him His eyes are put out -- He dieth. [Judges 16:1] Then went Samson to Gaza, and saw there a harlot, and went in unto her.
2] And it was told the Gazites, saying, Samson is come hither. And they compassed him in, and laid wait for him all night in the gate of the city, and were quiet all the night, saying, In the morning, when it is day, we shall kill him.
3] And Samson lay till midnight, and arose at midnight, and took the doors of the gate of the city, and the two posts, and went away with them, bar and all, and put them upon his shoulders, and carried them up to the top of a hill that is before Hebron.
4] And it came to pass afterward, that he loved a woman in the valley of Sorek, whose name was Delilah.
5] And the lords of the Philistines came up unto her, and said unto her, Entice him, and see wherein his great strength lieth, and by what means we may prevail against him, that we may bind him to afflict him; and we will give thee every one of us eleven hundred pieces of silver.
Samson's fall from the favour of God that was to come isn't a surprise, he broke God's commandments and slept with a harlot and was easily seduced by a very evil woman. It is true Samson had a special gift of strength and incredible fighting skills. This however did not cancel out God's laws and his need to abide within them. In consideration for Samson, it would have been very difficult to remain humble in his circumstances.
6] And Delilah said to Samson, Tell me, I pray thee, wherein thy great strength lieth, and wherewith thou mightest be bound to afflict thee.
7] And Samson said unto her, If they bind me with seven green withs that were never dried, then shall I be weak, and be as another man.
8] Then the lords of the Philistines brought up to her seven green withs which had not been dried, and she bound him with them.
9] Now there were men lying in wait, abiding with her in the chamber. And she said unto him, The Philistines be upon thee, Samson. And he brake the withs, as a thread of tow is broken when it toucheth the fire. So his strength was not known.
10] And Delilah said unto Samson, Behold, thou hast mocked me, and told me lies; now tell me, I pray thee, wherewith thou mightest be bound.
11] And he said unto her, If they bind me fast with new ropes that never were occupied, then shall I be weak, and be as another man.
12] Delilah therefore took new ropes, and bound him therewith, and said unto him, The Philistines be upon thee, Samson. And there were liers in wait abiding in the chamber. And he brake them from off his arms like a thread.
13] And Delilah said unto Samson, Hitherto thou has mocked me, and told me lies; tell me wherewith thou mightest be bound. And he said unto her, If thou weavest the seven locks of my head with the web. 14] And she fastened it with the pin, and said unto him, The Philistines be upon thee, Samson. And he awaked out of his sleep, and went away with the pin of the beam, and with the web.
15] And she said unto him, How canst thou say I love thee, when thine heart is not with me? Thou has mocked me these three times. and hast not told me wherein thy great strength lieth.
16] And it came to pass, when she pressed him daily with her words, and urged him, so that his soul was vexed unto death;
17] That he told her all his heart, and said unto her, There hath not come a razor upon mine head; for I have been a Nazarite unto God from my mother's womb; if I be shaven then my strength will go from me, and I shall become weak, and be like any other man.
18] And when Delilah saw that he had told her all his heart, she sent and called for the lords of the Philistines, saying, Come up this once, for he hath showed me all his heart. Then the lords of the Philistines came up unto her, and brought money in their hand.
19] And she made him sleep upon her knees; and she called for a man, and she caused him to shave off the seven locks of his head; and she began to afflict him, and his strength went from him. 20] And she said, The Philistines be upon thee, Samson. And he awoke out of his sleep, and said, I will go out as at other times before, and shake myself. And he wist not that the Lord was departed from him.
Samson was so confident in his own Strength that he didn't even feel or notice that the Spirit of God who gave him his strength had left him to himself to be smitten of his enemies. We all have gifts of God and it does us all well to realise the very same can and does happen to every one of us if we take the honour for our gift unto ourselves. We must always give God the glory and see ourselves as fools without his blessing.
[Judges 16:21] But the Philistines took him, and put out his eyes, and brought him down to Gaza, and bound him with fetters of brass; and he did grind in the prison house.
22] Howbeit the hair of his head began to grow again after he was shaven.
23] Then the lords of the Philistines gathered them together for to offer a great sacrifice unto Dagon their god, and to rejoice; for they said, Our god hath delivered Samson our enemy into our hand. 24] And when the people saw him, they praised their god; for they said, Our god hath delivered into our hands our enemy, and the destroyer of our country, which slew many of us.
25] And it came to pass, when their hearts were merry, that they said, Call for Samson, that he may make us sport. And they called for Samson out of the prison house; and he made them sport; and they set him between the pillars.
26] And Samson said unto the lad that held him by the hand, Suffer me that I may feel the pillars whereupon the house standeth, that I may lean upon them.
27] Now the house was full of men and women; and all the lords of the Philistines were there; and there were upon the roof about three thousand men and women, that beheld while Samson made sport. 28] And Samson called unto the Lord, and said, O Lord God, remember me, I pray thee, and strengthen me, I pray thee, only this once, O God, that I may be at once avenged of the Philistines for my two eyes. 29] And Samson took hold of the two middle pillars upon which the house stood, and on which it was borne up, of the one with his right hand, and of the other with his left.
30] And Samson said, Let me die with the Philistines. And he bowed himself with all his might; and the house fell upon the lords, and upon all the people that were therein. So the dead which he slew at his death were more than they which he slew in his life.
31] Then his brethren and all the house of his father came down, and took him, and brought him up, and buried him between Zorah and Eshtaol in the burying-place of Manoah his father. And he judged Israel twenty years.
Samson suffered much in prison, and no doubt would have been humbled by his experience. I believe he would have been praying and repenting of what he had done. Because we see that his enemies didn't notice in all that time that his hair had started to grow back, God must have distracted them and caused them to forget what they had once known. This opened the opportunity to deliver a crippling blow upon the Philistines. Now Samson had failed to be an example of righteousness unto his people which had very serious consequences.
He was not allowed to live through this experience, sin brings death. However, he went out of this life with God's Power flowing through his being one last time, fulfilling what God required of him, which was to help break the grip of the Philistines and to turn the course of Israel. Think about it all the Lords, and people of prominence, were destroyed in one hit. This would have greatly taken away the Philistines ability to make war in that generation. Losing their leadership, and knowledge of how to enslave and hold a people.
We are told Samson killed more of the enemy in his death than he did in his life. We have not shared this together to promote Samson as a great example of how we should live our lives. He clearly failed to abide in God's favour as he should have. However this piece of history shows us one of the ways that God protects and delivers his people. Samson was given an incredible gift and with that came a duty and responsibility to be a good steward. We as stewards must realise we are looking after something that is not ours but belongs to God and must be accounted for. We must all make an accounting.
May God bless you as you have read and pondered these scriptures to form your own opinions under God's guidance and direction according to the gifts of God unto you. Is my prayer in Jesus name, Amen.
JESUS WAS BORN EMMANUEL - GOD WITH US By Elder Murray G. Broughton of Euroa, Victoria, Australia
Isaiah 7 v 14 -Therefore the Lord himself shall give you a sign; Behold a virgin shall conceive, and shall bear a son, and call his name Emmanuel.
Matthew 2 v 6-Behold a virgin shall be with child, and shall bring forth a son, and then they shall call his name Emmanuel, {which being interpreted is God with us.}
Luke 1 v 26- 32--And in the sixth month the angel Gabriel was sent from God, unto a city of Galilee, name Nazareth. To a virgin spouse to a man whose name was Joseph, of the house of David; and the virgins name was Mary. And the angel came in unto her and said, Hail, thou virgin who art highly favored of the Lord. The Lord is with thee, for thou art chosen and blessed among women. And when she saw the angel, she was troubled at his saying and pondered in her mind what manner of salutation it should be. And the angel said unto her, Fear not, Mary, for thou has found favored with God. And behold, thou art conceived and bring forth a son and shall call his name Jesus. He shall be great and shall be called the son of the Highest; and the Lord God shall give unto him the throne of his father David.
Luke 2 v 1-12 And it came to pass in those days, that there was out a decree from Caesar Augustus, that all his empire should be taxed. The same taxing was when Cyrenius was governor of Syria. And all went to be taxed, everyone in his own city. And Joseph also went up from Galilee, out of the City of Nazareth, into Judea, unto the city of David, which is called Bethlehem, (because he was of the house and lineage of David.
To be taxed, with Mary his espouse wife, she being great with child. And so it was, that while they were there, the days were accomplished that she should be livered. And she brought her first born son, and wrapped him in swaddling clothes, and laid him in a manger, because there was none to give room for them in the inns. v8 -And there were in the same country, shepherds abiding in the field, keeping watch over their flocks by night. And lo, and angel of the Lord appeared unto them; and they were sore afraid. But the angel said unto them, fear not, for behold, I bring you good tidings of great joy, which shall be to all people. For unto you is born this day, in the city of David, a Savior, who is Christ the Lord. And this is the way you shall find the babe, he is wrapped in swaddling clothes, and is lying in a manger. And suddenly there was with the angel, a multitude of the heavenly host, praising God, and saying, Glory to God in the highest, and on earth, peace, goodwill to men. And it came to pass, then the angels were gone away from them into heaven, the shepherds said one to another, Let us go, even unto Bethlehem, and see this thing which is come to pass, which the Lord has made known to unto us. And they came with haste, found Mary and Joseph and the babe lying in the manger.
Matthew 3 v 1-21 ---Now when Jesus was born in Bethlehem of Judea, in the days of Herod the king; behold, there come wise men from the east to Jerusalem. Saying, where is the child that is born, the Messiah of the Jesus? for we have seen his star in the east and have come to worship him.
When Herod the King had heard of the child, he was troubled and all Jerusalem with him. And when he had gathered all the chief priest, and scribes of the people together, he demanded of them saying, where is the place that is written of by the prophets, in which Christ should be born? For he greatly feared, yet he believed not the prophets. And they said unto him, it is written by the prophets, that he should be in Bethlehem of Judea, for thus have they said. v 7. Then Herod when he had called the wisemen privily, inquired of them diligently what time the star appeared. And he sent them to Bethlehem, and said, go and search diligently, for the young child, and when ye have found the child, bring me word again, that I may come and worship him also. When they had heard the King, they departed; and lo, the star which they saw in the east went before them, until it came and stood over where the young Child was. When they saw the star, they rejoiced with exceeding great Joy. And when they were come into the house, they saw the young child, with Mary his mother, and fell down and worshiped him. And when they opened their treasures, they presented unto him gifts, Fold, and Frankincense and Myrrh. (Wise men to a young child, not a baby, in a house, Jesus was born in a Manger.)
And being warned of God in a dream that they should not return to Herod, they departed into their own country another way. And when they were departed, Behold, the angels of the Lord appeared unto Joseph in a vision, saying, Arise and take the young child and his mother, and flee into Egypt, and tarry thou there until I bring thee word; for Herod will seek the young child to destroy him. And when he arose, and took the young child, and the child's mother, by night, and departed to Egypt; And was there until the death of Herod, that it might be fulfilled which was spoken of the Lord, by the prophets, saying, Out of Egypt have I called my Son. Then Herod when he saw that he was mocked of the wise men, was exceeding wroth; and sent forth and slew all the children that were in Bethlehem, and all the coast there of, from two years old or under, according to the time which he had diligently inquired of the wise men.
v19--But when Herod was dead, behold an angel of the Lord appeared in a vision to Joseph in Egypt, Saying. Arise, and take the young child and his mother, and go into the land of Israel; for they are dead who sought the young child’s life.
And he arose, and took the young child and his mother, and came into the land of Israel.
The Scattered Saints
For the Man Who Hated Christmas By Nancy W. Gavin
It's just a small, white envelope stuck among the branches of our Christmas tree. No name, no identification, no inscription. It has peeked through the branches of our tree for the past ten years.
It all began because my husband Mike hated Christmas. Oh, not the true meaning of Christmas, but the commercial aspects of it - overspending and the frantic running around at the last minute to get a tie for Uncle Harry and the dusting powder for Grandma - the gifts given in desperation because you couldn't think of anything else.
Knowing he felt this way, I decided one year to bypass the usual shirts, sweaters, ties and so forth. I reached for something special just for Mike. The inspiration came in an unusual way.
Our son Kevin, who was 12 that year, was on the wrestling team at the school he attended. Shortly before Christmas, there was a non-league match against a team sponsored by an inner-city church. These youngsters, dressed in sneakers so ragged that shoestrings seemed to be the only thing holding them together, presented a sharp contrast to our boys in their spiffy blue and gold uniforms and sparkling new wrestling shoes.
As the match began, I was alarmed to see that the other team was wrestling without headgear, a kind of light helmet designed to protect a wrestler's ears. It was a luxury the ragtag team obviously could not afford.
Well, we ended up walloping them. We took every weight class. Mike, seated beside me, shook his head sadly, "I wish just one of them could have won," he said. "They have a lot of potential but losing like this could take the heart right out of them." Mike loved kids - all kids. He so enjoyed coaching little league football, baseball and lacrosse. That’s when the idea for his present came.
That afternoon, I went to a local sporting goods store and bought an assortment of wrestling headgear and shoes and sent them anonymously to the inner-city church. On Christmas Eve, I placed a small, white envelope on the tree, the note inside telling Mike what I had done, and that this was his gift from me.
Mike's smile was the brightest thing about Christmas that year. And that same bright smile lit up succeeding years. For each Christmas, I followed the tradition - one year sending a group of mentally handicapped youngsters to a hockey game, another year a check to a pair of elderly brothers whose home had burned to the ground the week before Christmas, and on and on.
The white envelope became the highlight of our Christmas. It was always the last thing opened on Christmas morning, and our children - ignoring their new toys - would stand with wide-eyed anticipation as their dad lifted the envelope from the tree to reveal its contents. As the children grew, the toys gave way to more practical presents, but the small, white envelope never lost its allure.
The story doesn't end there. You see, we lost Mike last year due to dreaded cancer. When Christmas rolled around, I was still so wrapped in grief that I barely got the tree up. But Christmas Eve found me placing an envelope on the tree. And the next morning, I found it was magically joined by three more. Unbeknownst to the others, each of our three children had for the first time placed a white envelope on the tree for their dad. The tradition has grown and someday will expand even further with our grandchildren standing to take down that special envelope.
Mike's spirit, like the Christmas spirit will always be with
us.

Our Pastor, Elder Alma Kerswell, who has faithfully served Kingston Branch over many years, in spite of being plagued with cancer for many years now, has decided not to stand for Branch President this next term. His health has been getting progressively worse as is the health of his wife, Janice. We would like to extend our deep appreciation and love to them both for their dedication. and pray that their lives may be filled with the blessings of God.
Annual Christmas Luncheon ~ Over the past years our members have provided the meal with the exception of the meat for which the Branch paid. This year, age and ill health and pressure of work has plagued some of our ladies, so it has been decided that the Branch will cover the cost of the complete meal. We are very grateful to Sr. Linda Myers who has accepted the responsibility of planning the meal. If Sr. Linda requires any help, she will contact you. Please register your attendance as soon as possible, so that quantities for purchases can be estimated. Contact Linda’s on mobile 0409 874 330 or email: lindy-loo70@hotmail.com
